  • In this paper, we propose an objective quality feature which is based on the human auditory system to measure vacuum cleaner noise. It is observed that some frequency bands are more sensitive to the human auditory system. Therefore, we divided the audible frequency range of vacuum cleaner noise into a number of frequency bands and the average energy of these bands was calculated. Among a number of average energies, an average energy of a frequency band was selected as the proposed feature. In order to test the performance of the proposed feature, fourteen vacuum cleaners were chosen and the noise was recorded in an anechoic-chamber. Then we performed subjective tests to obtain subjective scores of the noise data using the PCM (paired comparison method) and ACR (absolute category rating) subjective methods. The proposed objective quality feature shows high correlation with the subjective scores.

  • In this paper, a subjective assessment for sound quality evaluation of earphones is introduced. Although instantaneous switching among assessed stimuli is very important in the subjective assessment from the simultaneous comparison's point of view, it is physically impossible in the subjective assessment of earphone. Thus, this paper proposes an indirect assessment method using recorded stimuli and accompanied pre-processing and the assessment results are presented.

  • The reduction of the Vehicle interior noise has been the main interest of NVH engineers. The driver's perception on the vehicle noise is affected largely by psychoacoustic characteristic of the noise as well as the SPL. In particular, the HVAC sound among the vehicle interior noise has been reflected sensitively in the side of psychology. In previous study, we have developed to verify identification of source for the vehicle HVAC system through multiple-dimensional spectral analysis. Also we carried out objective assessments on the vehicle HVAC noises and subjective assessments have been already performed with 30 subjects. In this study, the linear regression models were obtained for the subjective evaluation and the sound quality metrics. The regression procedure also allows you to produce diagnostic statistics to evaluate the regression estimates including appropriation and accuracy. Appropriation of regression model is necessary to $R^2$ value and F-value. And testing for regression model is necessary to Independence, Homoscedesticity and Normality. Also we selected optimum layout of damping material using Taguchi method. As a result of application, sound quality is improved by more quiet, powerful, expensive, smooth.

  • Sound quality engineering in automobile noise applications has become more and more important under the current quiet driving condition because various noise components masked under high noise level can be audible in quieter driving situation. Many researches have been carried out for subjective and objective assessments on automobile sounds and noises. In particular, the interior sound quality has been one of research fields that can give high-quality feature to automobile products. Although many works related to the interior sound quality have been progressed or completed in foreign countries, limited research results are presented in the country. In the study, subjective assessments are first performed with 20 subjects to select perceptual adjectives suitable to the assessment of car interior noises during acceleration. The selected perceptual adjectives are employed as the assessment scales to evaluate the acceleration noises in questionnaire procedures using 35 subjects, for which several noises are created through digital filtering of the acceleration noises measured. Mean values and standard deviations for subjective assessment scores obtained by the questionnaire procedures are calculated and their reliability are also verified. Finally, various statistical analyses such as the correlation analysis and the factor analysis are carried out to reveal the interrelationship between the assessment scales and the spectrum components of the acceleration noises.

  • This paper improves the performance of VAD (Voice Activity Detector) in G.723.1 Annex A 6.3kbps/5.3kbps dual rate speech coder, which is developed for Internet Phone and videoconferencing. The VAD decision is based on a three-level energy threshold. We evaluates for processing time, speech quality, and bit rate. The processing time is reduced due to the accuracy of VAD decision on the silence period. On subjective quality test there is almost no difference compared with the G.723.1. In order to measure the bit rate we count the active speech frame (VAD=1) and we can reduce more bit rate as silence periods are shown.

  • This study is directed toward determining the number and characteristics of psychologically meaningful perceptual dimensions required for assessing the sound Ouaiity with respect to vehicle interior and/or exterior noises. and toward identifying the acoustical or psychoacoustical bases underlying the perception. By nonmetric MDS and clustring analysis of sound quality data sets on our own, of critical importance are two perceptual dimensions for which subjective verdicts can be interpreted as loudness and sharpness. The perceptual dimensions based upon similarity judgments could be accounted for 48% and 24% of the variance. each of which might be a match for the acoustic parameter "A-weighted maximum pressure level"(r= .85) and for the psychoacoustic parameter "sharpness" (r= .65), respectively. On the other hand, the perceptual dimensions based upon preference ratings could explain 66% and 10% of the variance. where the acoustic parameter "A-weighted maximum pressure leve"(r= .92) might be taken to be a best predictor, but sharpness appeared to be less suitable for the description of Preference behavior. Linked to the results, the problems of quantitative modelling of subjective sound quality evaluation and also of implementing corresponding cognitive combination rule for technical and industrial applications, say having "winner-sound qualify" according to preference criteria will be shortly in discussion.

  • In VoIP system, the speech quality is seriously degraded due to packet loss, and the degree of degradation by each packet loss depends on the characteristics of the corresponding packet. Therefore, it is possible to improve the speech quality of VoIP by selectively controlling the packet to be lost during transmission based on the expected degradation by the loss of each packet. In this paper, a new scheme to improve speech quality of DiffServ-based VoIP by assigning priority to each packet is proposed, and a method to determine the priority of each packet is developed. The performance of proposed method was measured in packet loss environment based on Gilbert model, and it was verified both objectively and subjectively that the speech quality is improved by the proposed method.
