  • Fluoride is a very effective element that can help prevent dental caries. The most economical and safest way of using fluoride is to add fluoride to the tap water. However, care must be taken to maintain the adequate concentration of fluoride in drinking water by regular check-up. Unless, dental fluorosis may occur. We are presenting a case of concurrent occurrence of fluorosis in people living in the same village in Korea, where drinking water contained high concentration of fluoride.

Effect of the Deep Sea Water on the Blood Glucose and the Langerhans' Islet in the STZ-induced type I Diabetic Mice (해양심층수 섭취가 STZ로 유발된 제 1형 당뇨 생쥐의 혈당치 및 췌도에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of deep sea water on blood glucose and the Langerhans' islet in STZ-induced type I diabetic mice were investigated. Results showed that diabetic symptoms in STZ-induced diabetic mice improve with a supplement of deep sea water. That is, the level of blood glucose was lower, the area of the Langerhan' islet was wider, and the number of pancreatic $\beta$-cells was larger in the diabetic mice supplied with deep sea water than in the diabetic mice supplied with tap water. Such effects might be related to the high level of Mg$^{2+}$ in the deep sea water.

  • This research was investigated to examine the status of goundwater contamination in Chung-Nam area over 2 years from 1996 May to 1998 May. The results show that the overall detection rates of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) by region were as followed: industrial region > agricultural & industrial complex region > gas station region > around industrial region > downtown region, and excess rates of those were as followed: industrial region > gas station region > agricultural & industrial region > around industrial region > downtown region. Benzene and TCE of VOCs examined in Chon-An industrial region exceeded drinking water standard. At the agricultural & industrial complex region, the observed mean concentration of TCE was 3.107 mg/L and TCE was also detected at 48.152 mg/L which is 100 times higher than drinking water standard, and other VOCs were also observed at higher concentrations as well. Based on our studies, It is concluded that appropriate remedial action should be performed to protect further groundwater contamination and to restore groundwater quality in Chung-Nam area.

  • We investigated the quality of vaporized liquid of water-boiled pine needle in the aspects of drinking conformity and aroma characteristics. As a result, there was no hazardous component in the assessment for 45 types of ingredients. Especially, inorganic components such as arsenic (As), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and cadmium (Cd) which are harmful to human body were not detected. Additionally, we observed that other ingredients were present within the standard level suitable for drinking. The total 34 volatile components of the vaporized liquid of water-boiled pine needle were identified by dynamic head-space method. Fenchol, bomeol $\beta-fenchyl$ alcohol and bomyl acetate were the major volatiles and composed of 6.7, 13.1, 26.6 and $16.2\%$ of total volatiles, respectively. In addition, the alcohols and aldehydes were the prominent ingredients of which the contents showed comparatively high.

  • This research was attempted to prove suppressing effect of medicinal plants on the intestinal absorption of toxic heavy metals. In vitro study was performed by membrane filtration considering intestinal absorption conditions. From drinking water contaminated singly with 10 and 50 times level of water quality standard for heavy metals, the removal ratio of lead was $40{\sim}60%$ by Chicorium intybus, Angelica acutiloba and Ganoderma lucidium. And the removal ratio of cadmium was $20{\sim}40%$. The removal ratio of lead contaminated with both was $30{\sim}50%$ by every sample similarly, the removal ratio of cadmium was $10{\sim}30%$. The removal ratio of Angelica acutiloba was more higher than Chicorium intybus and Ganoderma lucidium. Considering the extraction conditions of samples, $70^{\circ}C$, 2 min conditions were higher than $95^{\circ}C$, 10 min conditions, the removal ratios of heavy metals were similar. And the membrane filter permeated the material under 500 mw selectively, so the final filtrate could regard as passive transport in intestinal absorption. In conclusion, this research exhibited that the medicinal plants beverages have a suppressing effect on intestinal absorption of lead and cadmium in drinking water.
