  • The purpose of this investigation is to explore the possibility of using artificial mechanical means for excitation of shear layers with application in swirling jet mixing enhancement. For this purpose, a mechanical excitation device was designed and fabricated. The major system components consist of two subsonic nozzles, one swirl generator, and the excitation device. The experiments were carried out at various helical excitation modes; i.e., m=+0, m=$\pm$1, m=$\pm$2, m=$\pm$3, and m=$\pm$4. Axial mean velocity measurements were made with plane and helical wave excitation using a hot-wire anemometer. The results are compared with the baseline (plane-wave excitation) at various helical modes. The acquired data is presented in 3-D mesh plots and 2-D contour plots. It was observed that new device was effective in excitation of the helical instability waves and resulting in mixing enhancement of the swirling jet.

  • The component based propulsion modeling and simulation of an dual ramjet engine using Taylor-Maccoll flow equation and quasi 1-D combustor model. The subsonic and supersonic intake were modeled with Taylor-Maccoll flow having $25^{\circ}$ cone angle, the gas generator which transfers a pre-combustion gas into supersonic combustor was developed using Lumped model, and the determination of the size of nozzle throat of a gas generator was described. A quasi 1-D model was applied to model a supersonic combustor and the variation of temperature and pressure inside combustor were presented. Furthermore, the thrust and specific impulse applying fuel regulation by pressure recovery ratio and equivalence ratio were derived.

  • Three most outstanding maximum flow rate formulas are identified from many existing models. Outlines of the three limiting mass flow rate models are given along with computational procedures to estimate approximate amount of fission products released from a containment to environment for a given characteristic hole size for containment-isolation failure and containment pressure and temperature under a loss of coolant accident. Sample calculations are performed using the critical ideal gas flow rate model and the Moody's graphs for the maximum two-phase flow rates, and the results are compared with the values obtained from the mass leakage rate formula of CONTEMPT-LT code for converging nozzle and sonic flow. It is shown that the critical ideal gas flow rate formula gives almost comparable results as one can obtain from the Moody's model. It is also found that a more conservative approach to estimate leakage rate from a containment under a LOCA is to use the maximum ideal gas flow rate equation rather than tile mass leakage rate formula of CONTEMPT-LT.
