Objectives This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of manual therapy in patients with failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS). Methods We searched eight electronic databases from October 2022 and only selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting outcomes for manual therapy in FBSS patients. Included studies were analyzed qualitatively. Results A total of twelve RCTs were included and three studies were meta-analyzed. Manual therapy combined with exercise demonstrated more favorable outcomes in terms of pain reduction compared to exercise therapy only (P<0.01). Some studies reported that manual therapy resulted in low efficacy, while some studies reported that specific manual techniques have a significant effect in pain relief. We, therefore, conclude that several studies have a high risk of bias. Conclusions Findings suggest that manual therapy is a safe and non-invasive, promising option for managing FBSS. However, manual therapy is not the best option in all circumstances; thus, this should be selectively applied by a well-trained practitioner. Further studies such as well-designed, risk-controlled RCTs are required to gain stronger evidence.

Objectives This study aimed to conduct a systematic review evaluating the effectiveness of muscle energy technique(MET) in temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD). Methods Searches were conducted in 11 electronic databases until October 2023. Randomized controlled trials(RCT) comparing the effect of MET for TMD were included. All studies were evaluated using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Results Nine documents that fulfilled all the criteria were obtained for analysis. All studies showed some concerns in high risk of bias, but showed a significant improvement in pain and maximum mouth opening compared to baseline of MET or control group. MET was not better than extracorporeal shock wave therapy or myofascial release in some outcomes. Conclusions MET seems to be an effective treatment for TMD in some regards, however, can be considered as an adjunct therapy which has weak evidence. Further studies are required due to the inconclusive data and poor homogeneity found in this review.

Objectives Degenerative osteoarthritis of knee is a disease with an increasing number of patients worldwide and its general treatments have some side effects. Methods 102 subjects were classified into test group 1, test group 2, and control group, and clinical trial products were taken for 12 weeks. The effectiveness was evaluated with changes in visual analogue scale, Korean-Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and cyclooxygenase-2. Results Both test group 1 and test group 2 were effective in reducing the pain of degenerative osteoarthritis of knee, and only test group 2 was effective in improving the ability to perform daily activities. No clinically significant changes were observed for any safety parameter. Conclusions In conclusion, the data of this study indicate that Zanthoxylum piperitum leaf extract has effectiveness and safety against mild degenerative osteoarthritis of knee.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to find out what diseases or treatments the Korean Medicine Rehabilitation department is dealing with. Methods For data collection, papers published from 2012 to 2021 were searched and collected on the website of the Korean Society of Rehabilitation Medicine (https://www.ormkorea.org/). After that, reconfirmed data at the Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS) Traditional Medicine Portal (https://oasis.kiom.re.kr/). The searched papers were classified by year and classified according to format based on thesis and abstract. In addition, the papers were classified by subject, focusing on diseases and treatments. Results Total 557 studies were classified. The format of a total of 557 papers was distributed in 129 preclinical studies (23.2%), 136 literature studies (24.4%), 153 clinical studies (27.5%), 112 case reports (20.1%), and 27 other studies (4.8%). While preclinical studies and clinical studies are gradually decreasing over the years, case reports and literature studies are gradually increasing. Conclusions The number of papers in Journal of Korean Medicine Rehabilitation is gradually decreasing. Papers on more diverse topics is needed for the qualitative growth of journals and Department of Korean Medicine Rehabilitation.
