In this paper, optimal tuning of a cross-coupled controller linked with the feedforward controller and the disturbance observer is studied to improve contouring and tracking accuracy as well as robustness against disturbance. Previously developed integrated design and optimal tuning methods are applied for developing the robust tuning method. Strict mathematical modeling of the multivariable system is formulated as a state-space equation. Identification processes of the servomechanism are conducted for mechanical servo models. An optimal tuning problem to minimize both the contour error and settling time is formulated as a nonlinear constrained optimization problem including the relevant controller parameters of the servo control system. Constraints such as relative stability, robust stability and overshoot, etc. are considered for the optimization. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed optimal tuning procedure, linear and circular motion experiments are performed on the xy-table. Experimental results confirm the control performance and robustness despite the variation of parameters of the mechanical subsystems.

5-axis CNC machining now is getting popular because it can deal with complex shapes such as impeller, turbine blade and propeller without additional equipment or process, proving a set of various tool orientations. CAM software related to 5-axis machining is being developed quickly so that users can take advantage of potential capacities of 5-axis machine tools. However, only a few researches can be found in the area of control strategy development for 5-axis machining. This paper proposes a 5-axis cross-coupling control system based on a novel tool orientation error model. The proposed tool orientation error model provides accurate information on the tool orientation error in real time, which in turn enables directly controlling the tool orientation accuracy. The proposed control system also employs a contour error model to calculate the contour error and reflect it in the control as well. The accuracy of the proposed tool orientation error model is verified and the performance of the 5-axis cross-coupling control system in terms of both contouring and tool orientation accuracy is evaluated through computer simulations compared with existing 5-axis control systems.

Abrasive water-jet(AWJ) machining can cut various materials such as metal, glass and plastics. However, the AWJ machining has some troubles including kerf, rounding and side taper. In this study, we experimently investigated the correlation between the traverse speed of the abrasive water-jet and the dimensional error of the workpiece according to the thickness and the types of the material. The specimen was the stainless steel and the mild steel and the predetermined contour cutting was conducted. A comer radius error, an uncut width and a kerf were measured and evaluated.

The present paper deals with the development of digital contouring controller for multiaxial servosystem. Instead of coordinating the commands to the individual feed drives and implementing closed position loop control for each axis, this work is achieved by the evaluation of a optimal cross-couple compensator aimed specifically at improving contouring accuracy in multi-axial feed drives. The optimal control formulation explicitly includes the contour error in the performance index to be minimized. The contouring control is simulated for straight line. The results show that the proposed controller reduces contouring errors considerably, as compared to the conventional uncoupled control for biaxial systems.

This study presents a new type of real-t~me CNC interpolator that is capable of generating cutter paths for ball-end milling of NURBS surfaces. The proposed surface interpolator comprises real-time algorithms for cutter-contact (CC) path scheduling and CC path interpolation. Especially, in this study, a new interpolator module to regulate cutting forces is developed. This proposed algorithm utilizes variable-feedrate commands according to the curvature of machined surfaces. The proposed interpolator is evaluated and compared with the conventional method based on constant feedrates through computer simulation.
After a short review of the iterative optimal blank method, a new method of measuring the shape error for stamped parts with 3D contour lines, which is an essential component of the optimal blank design, is proposed. When the contour line of the target shape does not exist in a plane, but exists in 3D space, especially when the shape of the target contour line is very complicated as in the real automotive parts, then the measurement of the shape error is critical. In the current study, a method of shape error measurement based on the minimum distance is suggested as an evolution of the radius vector method. With the proposed method, the optimal blank shapes of real automotive parts were found and compared to the results of the radius vector method. From the current investigation the new method is found to resolve the issues with the radius vector method.

Because of the reduced number of displayable gray levels resulting from inverse gamma correction, images on a plasma display panel (PDP) exhibit undesirable false contours in dark areas. An error diffusion method has been applied to remedy this problem. However, it is computationally expensive and requires large memory resources. This paper proposes a computationally efficient dithering based technique to improve the gray level reproduction capability in dark areas. In the proposed method, multiple dithering masks ate utilized in turn to improve the gray level reproduction in dark areas. Also, in order to reduce undesirable regular patterns generated by the dithering method, positions of threshold values within a given dithering mask are changed. Compared to the error diffusion method, the proposed method requires much less computations and memory resources with a comparable gray level reproduction capability.

During cancer therapy by using high energy radiation, it is possible to improve the radiation therapy efficiency by performing a precise radiation therapy after verification of generated setup errors. In this paper, the video based electronic portal imaging device (EPID) which could display the portal image with near real time was developed to verify treatment position errors in radiation therapy instead of an analog typed portal film. This EPID system for applying QA tool of radiation therapy machine was consisted of a metal/fluorescent screen, $45^{\circ}$mirror, camera and image grabber. Radiation field verification has been performed to check quality assurance of the treatment machine itself by using this EPID system. The radiation field error was easily observed by edge detection of irradiated field size on EPID image when $0.6^{\circ}$ shift of collimator angle was generated. So, this implemented EPID system could be used as a radiation QA tool.

Mid-wave infrared (MWIR) imagery, due to its ability to capture the temperature of land cover and objects, serves as a crucial data source in various fields including environmental monitoring and defense. The KOMPSAT-3A satellite acquires MWIR imagery with high spatial resolution compared to other satellites. However, the limited spatial resolution of MWIR imagery, in comparison to electro-optical (EO) imagery, constrains the optimal utilization of the KOMPSAT-3A data. This study aims to create a highly visible MWIR fusion image by leveraging the edge information from the KOMPSAT-3A panchromatic (PAN) image. Preprocessing is implemented to mitigate the relative geometric errors between the PAN and MWIR images. Subsequently, we employ a pre-trained pixel difference network (PiDiNet), a deep learning-based edge information extraction technique, to extract the boundaries of objects from the preprocessed PAN images. The MWIR fusion imagery is then generated by emphasizing the brightness value corresponding to the edge information of the PAN image. To evaluate the proposed method, the MWIR fusion images were generated in three different sites. As a result, the boundaries of terrain and objects in the MWIR fusion images were emphasized to provide detailed thermal information of the interest area. Especially, the MWIR fusion image provided the thermal information of objects such as airplanes and ships which are hard to detect in the original MWIR images. This study demonstrated that the proposed method could generate a single image that combines visible details from an EO image and thermal information from an MWIR image, which contributes to increasing the usage of MWIR imagery.
