  • In this study, a damage detection method that uses sensitivity-based finite (FE) element model updating with the natural frequency and zero frequency was proposed. The stiffness matrix for a structure was modified using the sensitivity-based FE model updating method. A sensitivity analysis was used to update the FE model, and the natural frequencies and zero frequencies were considered as target parameters to supplement the information on the vibration characteristics. The locations and values of the damages were estimated from the modified stiffness matrix. Several numerical examples were considered to verify the performance of the proposed method.

  • For a seismic design or performance evaluation of a structure, an experimental investigation on a scale model of the structure or numerical analysis based on the finite element model is considered. Regarding the numerical analysis, a three-dimensional finite element analysis is performed if a high accuracy of the results is required, while a sensitivity or fragility analysis which uses huge seismic ground motions leads to the use of a lumped-mass stick model. The conventional modeling technique to build the lumped-mass stick model calculates the amount of the lumped mass by considering the geometric shape of the structure, like a tributary area. However, the eigenvalues of the conventional model obtained through such a calculation are normally not the same as those of the actual structure. In order to overcome such a deficiency, in this study, a new lumped mass stick model is proposed. The model is named the "frequency adaptive-lumped-mass stick model." It provides the same eigenvalues and similar dynamic responses as the actual structure. A non-prismatic column is considered as an example, and its natural frequencies as well as the dynamic performance of the new lumped model are compared to those of the full-finite element model. To investigate the damping effect on the new model, 1% to 5% of the critical damping ratio is applied to the model and the corresponding results are also compared to those of the finite element model.

  • Steel Braced frames are a commonly-used seismic resisting system, and chevron steel braced frames are a frequently used type of steel braced frame. Recent research has indicated that the seismic performance of braced frames can be improved by designing the braced frame gusset plate connections in a manner that direct reflects seismic deformation demands, and by permitting yielding in the gusset plate at select performance levels. A parametric study using Finite Element (FE) models was conducted to examine the influence of the gusset plate and framing elements on the seismic performance of chevron braced frames, and to calibrate and develop improved design models. The impact of the frame details, including frame sizes, clearance requirements, gusset plate thickness and tapered plate, was explored. The results suggested that proper detailing of the connection can result in a significant improvement in the frame performance. The results also show that the gusset plate thickness has a significant impact on frame performance.

  • As the building structures are higher and bigger, the high-performance steels of high strength, toughness, and low yield ratio had been required and developed. In this paper the behavior of the moment connection with bolted web and high strength steel was studied by using the finite-element analysis computer program of ABAQUS. The analysis model is based on the test results and the same cyclic load history was applied at the FE(Finite Element) model until it failed in the test. Through the FEA, several indicators hardly measured from the test were acquired. These indicators related to stress and strain were selected from three plastic rotation stages: 0.003 rad, 0.03 rad, and final failure rotation. Specifically, at the final failure stage, the strain indicators producing the full plastic behavior were suggested as a mechanical property for steel.

  • Since major reason of disaster in coastal area is wave action, prediction of wave deformation is one of the most important problems to ocean engineers. Wave deformations are due to physical factors such as shoaling effect, reflection, diffraction, refraction, scattering and radiation etc. Recently, numerical models are widely utilized to calculate wave deformation. In this study, the mild slope equation was used in calculatin gwave deformation which considers diffraction and refraction. In order to slove the governing equation, finite element method is introduced. Even though this method has some difficulties, it is proved to predict the wave deformation accurately even in complicated boundary conditions. To verify the validity of the numerical calculation, experiments were carried out in a model harbour of rectangular shape which has mild slope bottom. The results by F.E.M. are compared with those of both Lee's method and the experiment. The results of these three methods show reasonable agreement.

  • This paper presents the analytical-FE (finite element) squeal model, which can provide the efficient simulation time and accuracy. The system geometry and the extraction of the vibration modes were constructed using the finite element method. Instead, the friction contact model was derived from theoretical contact kinematics of the rotating disc and the stationary pads. This modeling procedure was incorporated into the perturbed equations of motion based on the finite elements of the system. Throughout the analytical-FE squeal model, the accuracy of linear stability analysis and the simulation time of FE squeal analysis were improved. In addition, the sensitivity of contact stiffness on brake squeal and the mode-coupling mechanism were provided by the system parameter study.

  • Objective: The result of finite element analysis depends on material properties, structural expression, density of element, and boundar or loading conditions. To represent proper elastic behavior, a finite element model was made using Hounsfield unit (HU) values in CT images. Methods: A 13 year 6 month old male was used as the subject. A 3 dimensional visualizing program, Mimics, was used to build a 3D object from the DICOM file which was acquired from the CT images. Model 1 was established by giving 24 material properties according to HU. Model 2 was constructed by the conventional method which provides 2 material properties. Protraction force of 500g was applied at a 45 degree downward angle from Frankfort horizontal (FH) plane. Results: Model 1 showed a more flexible response on the first premolar region which had more forward and downward movement of the maxillary anterior segment. Maxilla was bent on the sagittal plane and frontal plane. Model 2 revealed less movement in all directions. It moved downward on the anterior part and upward on the posterior part, which is clockwise rotation of the maxilla. Conclusion: These results signify that different outcomes of finite element analysis can occur according to the given material properties and it is recommended to use HU values for more accurate results.
