As the importance of transmission efficiency to reducing fuel consumption and conserving the environment rapidly increases, reducing the drag torque in an automotive wet clutch is emerging as an important issue in the automotive industry. The drag torque in a clutch occurs from viscous drag generated by automatic transmission fluid in the narrow gap between separate friction plates. In this study, the drag torques in an automotive wet clutch are investigated with respect to the angle and density of the grooves between separate friction plates by three-dimensional finite element simulation of a single set of wet clutch disks considering the two-phase flow of air and oil. The simulation results shows that the drag torque generally increases with the rotational speed to a critical point and then decreases at the high-speed regime. The grooves between the plates plays an important role in reducing the drag peak, and the inclined angle of the grooves affects the oil flow. The grooves with an angle of $50^{\circ}$ shows the lowest drag torques at both low and high speeds. The flow vectors inside the $50^{\circ}$ grooves shows clear evidence that the fluid flows out more easily from the grooves compared with the flow vectors inside grooves with lower angles. The simulation results shows that increasing the number of grooves (density of grooves) decreases the drag torque.
The reduction of drag torque is an important research issue in terms of improving transmission efficiency. Drag torque in a wet clutch occurs because of the viscous drag generated by the transmission fluid in a narrow gap (clearance) between the friction plate and a separate plate. The objective of this paper is to observe the effects of the friction plate area and the clearance on the drag torque using finite element simulation. The two-phase flow of air and oil fluid is considered and modeled for the simulation. The simulation analysis reveals that as the rotational speed increases, the drag torque generally increases to a critical point and then decreases sharply at a high speed regime. The clearance between the two plates plays an important role in controlling drag torque peak. An increase in the clearance causes a decrease in shear stress; thus, the drag torque also decreases according to Newton's law of viscosity. An observation of the effect of the area of contact between transmission fluid and friction plate shows that the drag torque increases with the contact area. The flow vectors inside the flow channel present clear evidence that the velocity of the fluid flows is faster with a larger friction plate, that is, in the case of a larger contact area. Therefore, the optimum size of the friction plate should be determined carefully, considering both the clutch performance and drag reduction. It is expected that the results from this study can be very useful as a database for clutch design and to predict the drag torque for the initial design with respect to various clutch parameters.
This paper presents an optimal design of a magnetorheological(MR) fan clutch based on finite element analysis and also presents torque control of engine cooling fan using a sliding mode control. The MR fan clutch is constrained in a specific volume and the optimization problem identifies the geometric dimension of the fan clutch that minimizes an objective function. The objective function for the optimization problem is determined based on the solution of the magnetic circuit of the initially designed clutch. Under consideration of spatial limitation, design parameters are optimally determined using finite element analysis. After describing the configuration of the MR fan clutch, the viscous torque and controllable torque are obtained on the basis of the Bingham model of MR fluid. Then, a sliding mode controller is designed to control the torque of the fan clutch according to engine room temperature and control performance is evaluated through computer simulation.
This paper focuses on cooling fan control by using a magnetic clutch type for the improvement of fuel economy on a heavy city bus. In general, Heavy duty vehicles use viscous clutch type cooling fan which has some disadvantages, such as slow response, wide temperature variation of engine coolant water. But a magnetic clutch type cooling fan can be controlled electronically so the engine coolant temperature can be precisely controllable and this effects could be used to reduce fuel consumption. A control system for applying the magnetic clutch type cooling fan was developed in this study and applied to the real field test and chassis dynamometer test. The result showed well controlled coolant temperature and enhancement of fuel economy.

This paper proposes a driver supportive device with haptic cue function which can be applicable for vehicles adopting manual transmission system to transmit gear-shifting information to a driver by kinesthetic forces. This haptic cue function is implemented on accelerator pedal by utilizing magnetorheological(MR) fluid and clutch mechanism. In order to achieve this goal, an MR clutch mechanism is devised to be capable of rotary motion of accelerator pedal. The proposed MR clutch is then optimally designed and manufactured under consideration of spatial limitation of vehicles. After transmission torque is experimentally evaluated according to field intensity. The manufactured MR clutch is integrated with accelerator pedal and electric motor to establish the haptic cue device. Control performances are experimentally evaluated via a simple feed-forward control algorithm.
In this research, a new type of haptic master device using electrorheological(ER) fluid for minimally invasive surgery(MIS) is devised and control performance of the proposed haptic master is evaluated. The proposed haptic master consists of ER bi-directional clutch/brake for 2 DOF rotational motion(X, Y) using gimbal structure and ER brake on the gripper for 1 DOF rotational motion (Z). Using Bingham characteristic of ER fluid and geometrical constraints, principal design variables of the haptic master are determined. Then, the generation of torque of the proposed master is experimentally evaluated as a function of applied field of voltage. A sliding mode controller which is robust to uncertainties is then designed and empirically realized. It has been demonstrated via experiment that the proposed haptic master associated with the controller can be effectively applied to MIS in real field conditions.
ER clutch is a device using ER fluid, so called "intelligent material" and is a controlled system with electric field strength. Currently, the temperature of ER fluid increases and affects the performance of ER clutch when ER clutch is operating. This study was undertaken to estimate this performance variation due to temperature rise of ER fluid. An analytic heat transfer model of concentric cylinder type ER clutch was developed and with this model, effects of changing geometric, kinetic parameters of ER clutch and ER fluid properties were described. In conclusion, compared with neglecting thermal effects, a performance of ER clutch was very differential and for uniform performance of ER clutch, we have to improve thermal stability of ER fluid. ER fluid.
