  • This paper presents performance analysis of a quarter-vehicle magneto-rheological(MR) suspension system with respect to different tire pressure. As a first step, MR damper is designed and manufactured based on the optimized damping force levels and mechanical dimensions required for a commercial mid-sized passenger vehicle. After experimentally evaluating dynamic characteristics of the manufactured MR damper, the quarter-vehicle MR suspension system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire and the MR damper is constructed in order to investigate the ride comfort. After deriving the equations of the motion for the proposed quarter-vehicle MR suspension system, vertical tire stiffness with respect to different tire pressure is experimentally identified. The skyhook controller is then implemented for the realization of quarter-vehicle MR suspension system. Ride comfort characteristics such as vertical acceleration RMS and weighted RMS of sprung mass are evaluated under various road conditions.

  • An MR(Magneto-Rheological) fluids damper is designed and applied to vibration suppression of a 1/4 car model. The damping constant of MR damper changes according to input current which is controlled in a semi-active way. Several control algorithms are compared in simulations and experiments. The advantage of the proposed Frequency shaped LQ control is that passenger comfort is emphasized in the range of 4~8Hz and driving safety is emphasized around the resonance frequency of unsprung mass.

  • Damper springs in a drive-line absorb the impulsive torque generated when a lock-up clutch is connected directly, instead of via a fluid coupling. Design optimization and finite element analysis were performed to improve the shock- and vibration-absorption capacity of the lock-up clutch. For this purpose, a multi-body dynamics model was developed by including the main parts of a vehicle, such as an engine with a clutch, a transmission, drive shafts and wheels, and a whole mass of a vehicle. The spring constants were selected so that resonance of a system could be avoided. Damper springs were optimized on the basis of the spring constants, impulsive torques, compressed angles, spring counts, fatigue constraints, etc. Topology optimization was performed for three plates with the damper springs. The compliance was set up as an objective function, and volume fraction was fixed below 0.3. A new shape for the plates was proposed on the basis of the topology result.

  • In the present study, sedimentation and shear stress of MR fluid are investigated to physical characteristics of MR fluid along temperature conditions. MR fluid is a suspension of micrometer-sized magnetic particles in a base liquid. Therefore, dispersion of MR fluid is important in the case of the design and optimization of the system using MR fluid. Due to sedimentation characteristics of MR fluid by magnetic particles, the sedimentation and shear stress of commercial MR fluid are investigated at $25^{\circ}C$ and $80^{\circ}C$ temperatures by using a forced convection oven and a viscometer. From experimental results, the sedimentation and shear stress are more affected by the temperatures of $80^{\circ}C$ than $25^{\circ}C$ and the mixing time of 5min than 10min. Shear stress by the applied current increases the shape of a quadratic equation and are lower 6-18% at $80^{\circ}C$ than $25^{\circ}C$.

  • Electrorheological(ER) fluid is a kind of smart material with variable shear stress and dynamic viscosity under various electric field intensity. Electric field can control the damping characteristics of ER damper. The objective of this study is the analysis of the performance of ER damper and its application to shock absorber. Idealized nonlinear Bingham plastic shear flow model is used to predict the velocity profile between electrodes. Cylindrical dashpot ER damper with moving electrode is constructed and tested under various electric fields. The analytic and experimental results for damping force are compared and discussed. Drop test system using ER damper is prepared to identify transient vibration characteristics. The rebound is eased as the applied electric field increases. When semi-active control algorithm is applied, rebound phenomenon disappears and vibration energy level decays faster than the case of zero electric field.

  • The aim this study is to provide fundamental informations for the development of magneticfluid damper. To achieve the aim. the damping effect of magneticfluid is investigated by experiments that the diameter of inner circular bar and the input amplitude vary in the magnetic field generated by the permanent magnet and the electromagnet. From the study, the following conclusive remarks can be made. As the diameter of inner circular bar and the input amplitude increase. the damping effect is improved. And we can know that as the contact area between inner circular bar and magneticfluid increases, damping ratio is improved. Also we consider the cases that there is magnetism generated by electromagnet and DC voltage is supplied to electromagnet from 10V to 50V by 10V. In these cases, the amplitude ratio decreases sharply from 1.8 1.0 And for these cases, the damping ratio is .745.

  • This paper studies a semi-active suspension with ER damper controlled Fuzzy Net Controller designed GA(Genetic Algorithm). Apparent viscosity of ERF(Electro-Rheological Fluid) can be changed rapidly by applying electric field. Semi-active suspension for ground vehicles are expected to improve ride quality with less vibration. This paper deals with a two-degree -of-freedom suspension using the ER damper for a quarter vehicle system. In this paper, the GA is applied for generating Fuzzy Net Controllers. The GA designs the optimal structure and performance of Fuzzy Net Controller having hybrid structure. Computer simulation results show that the semi-active suspension with ER damper has good performances of ride quality.

  • MR(Magneto-rheological) fluid is smart fluid that can change its characteristics then magnetic fields are applied. Recently, many researches have been performed on this MR fluid for the application in a vareity of areas including automobile shock absorbers. This paper describes the design procedure of a MR damper and the analysis results of its dynamic characteristics. MR fluid in the magnetic field shows initial yield shear stress and increasing resistive viscosity with final saturation thereafter. Herschel-Bulkley model is used to simulate the flow characteristics of MR fluid and magnetic analysis is used to identify the magnetic property of the MR fluid in the orifice of the damper. The dynamic characteristics of the damper was predicted and compared with the experimental results for typical sinusoidal excitations.

  • This paper addresses on the determination of damping coefficients of an infinitely long squeeze film damper operating with an electro-rheological (ER) fluid. The ER fluid behaves as Bingham fluid with an electric field dependent yield shear stress. AS phenomenological model of the fluid is adopted for the relationship between the yield shear and the intensity of the electric field imposed on the fluid domain. The model is then incorporated with the governing equation and associated boundary conditions of the squeeze film damper executing a circula centered orbit for the expression of dimension- less damping coefficients. Numerical simulation is performed to evaluate the performance improvement of the proposed squeeze film damper.
