  • In this study, an analysis program to assess the susceptibility of steam generator tubes due to the flow-induced vibration was developed. Analysis of fluid-elastic instability and random turbulence excitation for the U-tube bundle in CE-type steam generator was accomplished. The effective mass distribution along the U-tube was obtained to calculate the natural frequency and dynamic mode shape. Finally, stability ratios and rms vibration amplitude for selected tubes are obtained.

  • A series of experiments were performed to see the dependence of the response characteristics of vortex-induced vibration of flexible cylinders on mass rations for marine applications. Experiments were conducted in the $60cm{\times}60cm$ test section of the cavitation tunnel at the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering using 5 test rods of 60cm length and 6mm diameter with different mass ratios. It was confirmed quantitatively from the experiments that the low mass ratio cylinders have much broader flow velocity range of large amplitude vibrations than high mass ratio ones.

  • The fluid induced vibration (FIV) phenomena of an equivalent airfoil system of MAV have been investigated in low Reynolds number flow region. Unsteady flows with viscosity are computed using two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The present fluid/structure interaction analysis is based on one of the most accurate computational approach with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) techniques. The highly nonlinear fluid/structure interaction phenomena due to severe flow separations have been analyzed for the low Reynolds region that has a dominancy of flow viscosity. The effects of Reynolds number and initial angle of attack on the fluid/structure coupled vibration instability are shown and the qualitative trend of FIV phenomenon is investigated.

  • In this paper, the structure-fluid coupled analysis is carried out in order to examine the cause of the vibration induced by fluid in the pressure-reducing valves for water. It is confirmed that there is the noise at the area of low frequency of 250Hz by measuring noise at pressure reducing valve. The flow analysis is performed by the commercial software ANSYS/CFX. The flow velocity of about 40 m/s is formed by nozzle effect, and so negative pressure is happened in the pressure reducing valve. The structure analysis is carried out with the load condition of pressure distribution by flow formed in valve. The rubber material at disk is deformed to the extent of closing up flow passage. It is confirmed that the disc deformation which is occurred repeatedly is due to noise and vibration at the pressure reducing valve.

  • Fluid-elastic instability and turbulence excitation for an under developing steam generator are investigated numerically. The stability ratio and the amplitude of turbulence excitation are obtained by using the PIAT (Program for Integrity Assessment of Steam Generator Tube) code from the information on the thermal-hydraulic data of the steam generator. The aspect ratio, the ratio between the height of U-tube from the upper most tube support plate (h) and the width of two vertical portion of U-tube (w), is defined for geometric parameter study. Several aspect ratios with relocation of tube support plates are adopted to study the effects on the mode shapes and characteristics of flow-induced vibration. When the aspect ratio exceeds value of 1, most of the mode shapes at low frequency are generated at the top of U-tube. It makes very high value of the stability ratio and the amplitude of turbulent excitation as well. We can consider that the local mode shape at the upper side of U-tube will develop the wear phenomena between the tube and the anti-vibration bars such as vertical, horizontal, and diagonal strips. It turns out that the aspect ratio reveals very important parameter for the design stage of the steam generator. The appropriate value of the aspect ratio should be specified and applied.

The stability ratio and the amplitude of turbulence excitation are obtained by using the $PIAT^{(R)}$ (program for integrity assessment of steam generator tube) code from the information on the thermal-hydraulic data of the steam generator. It makes very high value of the stability ratio and the amplitude of turbulent excitation as well. We can consider that the local mode shape at the upper side of U-tube will develop the wear phenomena between the tube and the anti-nitration bars such as vortical, horizontal, and diagonal strips. It turns out that the aspect ratio reveals very important parameter for the design stage of the steam generator. The appropriate value of the aspect ratio should be specified and applied.

  • In this paper, numerical simulations are performed on the lock-in phenomena of vortex induced vibration(VIV) of a two dimensional cylinder. A deforming grid as well as a rigidly moving grid are used to simulate the movement of the cylinder. The grid deformation is accomplished by the linear spring analogy. Converged solutions, which are obtained by controling the grid size and the non-dimensional time step, are used for comparison and validation of the analysis results. Moreover, the efficiency and the accuracy of the coupling methods for fluid-structure interaction are examined.
