The forest vegetation developing on Mt. Inwang, an isolated forestland in Seoul, Korea was analyzed phytosociologically and its spatial distribution mapped out. Using the vegetation map, The characteristics of landscape structures in terms of the number and size of patches are discussed. Forest vegetation of the study area was classified into ten communities, ten groups, and eighty subgroups. Landscape element types were classified into secondary forests, relict communities, introduced plantations, and other elements including urbanized area. Pinus densiflora community, natural forest and Robinia pseudo-acacia community, plantation, formed matrix and some secondary forest elements, relict communities and the ether plantations of small size tended to distribute as small patches in such matrix. The number of patches per unit area in secondary forest elements was more than that in plantation elements. The result in patch size was vice versa. The vascular plant species richness of the landscape element types in Mt. Inwang was found to he positively related to their size. As the results of landscape ecological analyses, it was estimated that differentiation of patches recognized in community level would be related to human interference a and those in subordinate levels to natural process such as progression of succession.
As the kettle excavated from a site in Hwangnam-dong, Gyeongju was presumed to have been used as a melting crucible in a glass production workplace, we decided to prove its usage by scientific analysis. First, we performed conservation treatment to find the original status of the kettle, and then SEM-EDS and XRD analysis of the five corrosions created on the surface of the kettle. The fragment of the spout, which played a crucial role for the kettle to be considered as a melting crucible, was discovered during the conservation treatment. So the mouth rim of the kettle was restored to perfection. When we observed the microstructure of the metal sample, it was proved to be cast iron gradually cooled without heat treatment. In the corrosion products, the main components were Fe and O and other components such as P, Si, Ca, and S were found. The main compounds were quartz, vivianite, goetheite, akaganite, lepidocrocite, hematite, etc. Although these components were used as raw materials for making glass, these were found not in the melting status but mere raw materials. This can be an evidence to show these site where the kettle was excavated had been a glass production workplace. However, it is not sure that the kettle was used as a melting crucible. Moreover, if we consider the organic mold and sand clay accumulated in the well site when the kettle was excavated at first, we can see this as a formative factor of the corrosions of the kettle. Therefore, we concluded that the kettle is a typical cast iron and was not used as a melting crucible of glass.

It was understood as the most beautiful scenery in the place and it had the meaning of the ethics place which embodied Neo Confucianism. Currently, the fabrication of a high-tin bronze spoon by traditional manufacturing techniques involves 10 steps in the bronze ware workshop. Hot forging has a major influence on manufacturing and involves two to three steps. The dendritic ${\alpha}$-phase in the microstructure of the high-tin bronze spoon is refined and finely dispersed through hot forging. In addition, twinning is observed in the ${\alpha}$-phase of the hammered part, and the ${\alpha}$-phase microstructure gradually transform from a polygon to a circular shape due to hammering. In this process, the adjacent ${\alpha}$-phases overlap with each other and remain combined after quenching. The microstructure with the overlapping is also observed in bronze artifacts, and this shows the correlation with technical system. The results of the experimental hot forging of Cu-22%Sn alloys show that the decrease in in the amount of the dendritic microstructure, which forms during casting, is in proportion to the number of processing steps and that the refined grain obtained by hammering contributes to the improvement in the strength of the material. From the hammering marks, which are observed on both the bronze artifact excavated from archaeological sites and on the high-tin bronze spoon produced in the traditional workshop, it is presumed that the knowledge regarding the unrecorded manufacturing system of bronze ware in ancient times has been passed down in a traditional way up to the system used currently.
This paper aims to reveal the thoughts of Confucian Hong chanyu illuminate the literary activity. Hong chanyu is representative of the modern and contemporary Confucian scholars. In chapter 2, a Confucian scholar said the spirit of the Hong chanyu. He was considered unnecessarily cause and form. He thought it was a real need and times of where they live. In this article, we examined the patterns of activities of the Sarmathians though in a humble measure, with a focus on the regions where the Sarmathian sheaths spreaded. One of the main weapons the mounted nomads like the Scythias, the Sarmathians, and the Alans used at war was a spear. Though complementary, a sword was the most convenient and appropriate weapon when fighting at a near distance, fallen from the horse to the ground. The Sarmathian swords continued the tradition of the Akinakes which the Scythias or the Persians used, but those of the Sarmathians showed some advances in terms of the easiness with which a sword was drawn out from a sheath, and the way the sheaths were worn to parts of a human body. It turns out that the Sarmathian sheaths, which were designed for the people to draw swords easily, having the sheaths attached to thighs through 4 bumps, spread extensively from Pazyryk, Altai, to South Siberia, Bactria, Parthia and Rome. The most noteworthy out of all the Sarmathian sheaths were the ones that were excavated from the 4th tomb in Tillatepe, Afghanistan which belonged to the region of Bactria. The owner of the fourth tomb of Tilla-tepe whose region was under the control of Kushan Dynasty at that time, was buried wearing Sarmathian swords, and regarded as a big shot in the region of Bactria which was also under the governance of Kushan Dynasty. The fact that the owner of the tomb wore two swords suggests that there had been active exchange between Bactria and Sarmathia. It seemed that the reason why the Sarmathians could play an important role in the exchange between the East and the West might have something to do with their role of supplying Chinese goods to Silk Road. That's why we are interested in how the copper mirrors of Han Dynasty, decoration beads like melon-type beads, crystal beads and goldring articulated beads, and the artifacts of South China which produced silks were excavated in the northern steppe route where the Sarmathians actively worked. Our study have established that the eye beads discovered in Sarmathian tomb estimated to have been built around the 1st century B.C. were reprocessed in China, and then imported to Sarmathia again. We should note the Huns as a medium between the Sarmathians and the South China which were far apart from each other. Thus gold-ring articulated beads which were spread out mainly across the South China has been discovered in the Huns' remains. On the other hand, between 2nd century B.C. and 2nd century A.D. which were main periods of the Sarmathians, it was considered that the traffic route connecting the steppe route and the South China might be West-South silk road which started from Yunnan, passed through Myanmar, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and then went into the east of India. The West-south Silk road is presumed to have been used by nomadic tribes who wanted to get the goods from South China before the Oasis route was activated by the Han Dynasty's policy of managing the countries bordering on Western China.
Iron objects become corroded at fast speed from the moment when they are excavated, so it is needed to control corrosion through processes of conservation treatment. However, re-corrosion mostly takes place in excavate iron objects, although they have already gone through the process of conservation treatment, and it is more difficult to carry out the second conservation treatment of re-corroded excavated iron objects than the first conservation treatment, and it requires a longer period of time to treat them as well. In this study, aims to discover factors of re-corrosion by scientifically analyzing corrosion products generated during the process of storage after the process of conservation treatment. The finished on conservation treatment of the iron artifacts, which were unearthed from three ancient site in Gyeongju by using the same conservation method between 2002 and 2009, re-corrosion condition observed on the packaging-iron artifacts. Focused on 9 target forged iron artifacts among them, this study analyzed the physical changes by mass measurement, naked-eye and microscopic observations and the chemical changes by SEM-EDS, XRD, IC and ICP analysis. The results show that the yellowish brown corrosion products formed on the facing surface of part dropped from the artifacts had different associated forms but acicular shape. In addition, the acicular shape became clearer as the color changed from red to yellowish brown. According to the process when the conservation treatment was completed, the mass of the artifacts increased in proportion to the corrosion products and the chloride ion ($Cl^-$) concentration had a tendency to increase relatively. ${\beta}$-FeOOH (akaganeite) was confirmed in the XRD analysis for the corrosion products of all the collected samples. As a result of ICP analysis, $Na^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ components were confirmed.

Korean pagodas were constructed in the shape of a wood pagoda, brick pagoda, stone pagoda, etc. On the other hand, the currently remaining traditional pagodas are those having nonflammable materials, such as brick, stone, etc. Compared to the stone pagoda, there is data regarding brick pagodas, but there is little literature data on how to construct these pagodas. This appears to be because there are relatively few Korean brick pagodas currently remaining, they are locally restricted, the material limit is not overcome, pagoda's historical and regional problems have not been analyzed, and pagoda construction is centered on pagoda construction. Therefore, this study examined the local cultural characteristics on the construction of brick pagodas. As a result, cultural exchange between Korea and China was performed through the silk road and there was a marine route for cultural exchange. Such exchange was shared with the East Asia area as well, which can be found by comparing remains at related areas. Exchange with China can be mentioned as the selective exchange of local powers as well as blind learning. Second, brick pagoda were constructed in Korea because of the good quality soil easily. Uisang's Hwaeomjong was negotiated with the main power not agreeing with Buddhism, which was popularized and the local power. Third, brick pagoda construction was influenced by negotiation related between Balhae and Silla, in which the ethnic influence was locally affected and could be mentioned as being a culturally selective result transferred from China. As a result, brick pagodas can be oriented by forming a unitary state rather than a small country within China's influence range as well as cultural transfer through the silk road.
In this thesis, ammaksae, or internal roof tiles, which was reported to be in the period of Baekje, was examined on the basis of layers of archaeological excavation and styles of relics. As a result, among the relics which have already been reported, jidumun amkiwa (concave roof tiles patterned by finger tips) excavated from Pungnap Earthen Wall and yudansik amkiwa (stepped concave roof tiles) from remains such as Guari Baekje Remains, could not be seen yet. The only relics that could be identified as original-style ammaksae or ammaksae were jidumun amkiwa unearthed from the site of Gunsurisa Temple, togiguyeon amkiwa (mouth-rim earthenware concave roof tiles) and yuaksik amkiwa (concave roof tiles with sills) from Buso Fortress and Gwanbukri Baekje Remains, and gwimyeonindongdangchomun ammaksae (honeysuckle-pattern concave end roof tiles with monster design) from the sites of Jeseok Temple and Mireuk Temple. Regarding ammaksae in the period of Baekje like the above, it is considered that jidumun amkiwa (short sills appeared), which showed up in the period of China's North Dynasties, developed into togiguyeon amkiwa and yuaksik amkiwa (sills were formed), and then gwimyeonindongdangchomun ammaksae (patterns appeared) emerged.
This study presents an investigation into the conservation process of an iron dagger and scabbard, which are a lacquered scabbard and a dagger inserted in it, excavated in the Daho-ri relic of Changwon by Gimhae National Museum. The bronze dagger whose condition was poor due to corrosion was coated with Incralac, an intensifier, to reveal the surface patterns through a microscope. The lacquered scabbard was removed of foreign substances on the surface and coated with HPC 2%(in water) to protect the film. Applied onto the surface from which foreign substances were removed was Caparol Binder 5%(in water) two to three times to form a protective film and then faced with Korean paper. Once it was fixed in a polyurethane foam in a stable manner, it was turned over to receive the same process on the back. Three layers of Korean paper were attached to the back of the scabbard to support the thin artifact. HPC 2%(in water), which was applied to the scabbard, was also applied to the iron dagger inside for cementing effect. After all the processes were completed, the artifact was put in a transparent acrylic box for future display.
