  • Since the dynamic behaviors of liquid storage tanks on flexible soil are significantly influenced by the fluid-structure-soil interaction (FSSI), its effects must be rigorously considered for accurate earthquake analysis and seismic design of the storage system. In this study, dynamic analysis is performed for a rectangular liquid storage tank on flexible soil, and its dynamic characteristics are examined by rigorously considering the effects of FSSI. The hydrodynamic force and the interaction force between the structure and soil are evaluated using the finite-element approach. In the evaluations, mid-point integrated finite elements and viscous dampers are considered for energy radiation into the infinite soil. The effective earthquake force is then obtained from free-field analysis. It is thus demonstrated that the earthquake responses of the rectangular liquid storage tank on flexible soil are significantly influenced by the FSSI.

  • The purpose of the study presented in this paper is to develope the general model for capture of the linear and nonlinear response of a flexible diaphragm building in which there are significant contributions from the out-of-plane walls. Two single-story single-diaphragm half scale reinforced masonry buildings were tested by researchers at the United States Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL). The first had a metal deck diaphragm. The second specimen had a diaphragm with a single layer of diagonal lumber sheathing, A multiple degree of freedom (MDOF) approach is adopted in this paper. The required stiffnesses and strengths of the components within this model are determined.

  • The proposed simplified MDOF model is applied to a half-scale single-story reinforced masonry test building with a single diagonally-sheathed diaphragm. Comparisons of analytical studies to experimental tests can be valuable for understanding the seismic response of these types of buildings and for determining the qualities and limitations of the simplified models. A model calibration process is performed in this paper to determine the required structural properties based on the elastic and inelastic test responses for test building. This approach is necessary since established methods to determine the in-plane and out-of-plane stiffness, strength, and hysteresis do not exist.

  • This paper presents a procedure for designing command to maneuver flexible structure with very little residual vibration, even in the presence of modeling errors. For the open loop maneuver, the various shaped profiles using multiple step inputs delayed in time are considered for robustness and compared with the responses of rigid body and flexible body in virtue of simulations and experiments. Input shaping generates vibration-reducing shaped commands through convolution of an impulse sequence with the desired command. A flexible model with a cylindrical hub and four symmetric appendages is considered to examine the responses to real plant, and to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed shapers. The appendages are long and flexible, leading to low frequency vibration under any control action. It is shown by a series of simulation that a properly designed feedback controller with input shaper performs well, as compared with open loop controller with input shaper. The control objective is to achieve a fast settling time of residual vibration to flexible structure and robustness (insensitivity)to plant uncertainty, to eliminate residual vibration.

  • This work presents experimental results on vibration control of flexible structures using the squeeze mode electrorheological(ER) mount. An appropriate size of the squeeze mode ER mount is devised and its field-dependent damping force characteristics are experimentally evaluated. The ER mount is then applied to two different flexible structures : beam structure and frame structure. An optimal controller associated with displacement and acceleration signals is designed to suppress the imposed vibration and experimentally realized using the microprocessor. Vibration control responses of the flexible structures such as acceleration are evaluated in time and frequency domains.

  • In this paper, mechanical behavior of unidirectional composites with flexible matrix was predicted by geometrical non-linear finite element analysis. Two typical idealized unit cells of square and hexagonal fiber arrays were modeled and these were subjected to different loadings. The stress-strain behavior of composites was predicted from which the effective properties were calculated. The hyperelasticity of polyurethane matrix was considered using Mooney-Rivlin model. In result, the stress-strain behavior of flexible composites shows non-linearity, especially it is remarkable under transverse normal and shear loading conditions. In this cases, there are great difference between square and hexagonal fiber array models.
