A total of 57 species of fish species was collected by a trawl from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay. The dominant species were Pholis nebulosa, Syngnathus schlegeli, Leiognathus nuchalis, Pseudoblennius cottoides, Sebastes inermis, Favonigobius gymnauchen, which accounted for 69.9% of the total numbers of fish collected. Fish collected in the study area were primarily small fish species or early juveniles of large fish species. Only about 10% of fishes which were collected in the eelgrass bed exceeded 15cm in standard length. Seasonal variations in both species composition and abundance were major characteristics in the study area. The peak abundance occurred in spring, while the number of species was the highest in fall. However, both the number of species and abundance of fishes showed the lowest values in winter. High species diversity indices were observed in fall. Temperature, eelgrass standing crop and abundance of food organisms influenced seasonal changes of the fish community in the study area. More abundant and more diverse fishes were collected during nighttime than daytime.
Fish assemblages associated with eelgrass beds and unvegetated area were compared based on specimens collected every month in Jindong Bay. The common fish species were Hexagrammos otakii, Acanthopagrus schlegeli, Lateolabrax japonicus, Pholis nebulosa, P. fangi, Leiognathus nuchalis, Repomucenus valenciennei, and Acanthogobius flavimanus. H. otakii, A. schlegeli, P. nebulosa and L. japonicus were higher abundance in an eelgrass bed than unvegetated area, whereas P. fangi, R. valenciennei and A. flavimanus were higher in unvegetated area. Sillago japonicus, Hippocampus japonica, Takifugu niphobles, Pseudoblennius percoides, Sebastes inermis, Syngnathus schlegeli, Sebastes schlegeli were found in an eelgrass bed, but not in unvegetated area. Most of fish species were primarily small fish species or juveniles of fish species in an eelgrass bed, while larger fish species were found in unvegetated area. The eelgrass bed in Jindong Bay seem to play a nursery role for fishes. Seasonal variations in both species composition and abundance were large in two habitats; higher number of species and individuals occurred May 2002, and April 2002 to July 2002, while biomass was the highest in April 2002 and July 2002. Fish numbers as well as biomass were lowest in January 2002. Species richness, number of individuals and biomass of fishes in an eelgrass bed were significantly higher than those of in unvegetated area. These result suggest that differences in fish species richness and abundances are primarily related to habitat structure. Different habitat preferences were evidenced for the juveniles and adult of several fish species.
Gobiid fish were collected monthly in Cheonsu Bay by a beach seine from the shallow water and by an otter trawl from the deep water from September, 1984 to August, 1986. Seasonal variation in species composition and biology of the major species were examined with the data of length and age composition. Fourteen speices of gobies were identified. Gobiid fish were more abundant in the shallow water than in the deep water. In the shallow water, they constituted 66% and 39% of the fish collected in the mud flat and the sand beach, respectively. The suction discs of the gobies explains that they inhabit successfully in the surf zone where the wave action is strong. Of the major species, Chaenogobius mororanus predominated in the shallow mud flat. A large number of adults of this species were obtained in Spring and their juveniles were collected from Summer through Autumn. Favonigobius gymnauchen was abundant in the shallow water, especially in the sand beach. This fish seemed to spawn from May through June, about two months later than Chaenogobius mororanus. Acanthogobius hasta juveniles lived in the shallow water and moved into the deep water as the fish grew. Chaturichthys stigmatias was collected mainly in the deep zone.
Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance of shallow water fish off Yongwon, Jinhae in the southern coast of Korea was determined by the analysis of monthly samples collected by a beach seine from January to December, 1998. Among 54 species identified, the resident species such as Favonigobius gymnauchen, Chaenogobius laevis, Pholis nebulosa and juvenile Hyporhamphus intermedius were predominated in abundance. The temporal species such as Sardinella zunasi, Leiognathus nuchalis and Takifugu niphobles were collected between April and September. Mean abundance (322 individuals/1000 $m^2$ or 806 g/1000 $m^2$) was higher than that in the shallow sand surf zone of Teachon, but lower than that in the shallow mud area of Chonsu Bay in the western coast of Korea. A large number of H. intermedius were collected in cold months between November and January. The dominant resident species began to be collected from february, and the number of species and biomass were increased until July. A small number of temporal species were collected and subsequently the abundance was low from August to October when high abundance was expected as in the other shallow waters by recruitment of a large number of juveniles of temporal species. The low abundance in these warm months seemed to be related to the water quality by weak water circulation in this shallow mud area.
This study was undertaken to assess the annual cycle of primary production and plant pigments in a downstream of the Han River. Measurements were carried out at three week intervals during April 1966 and March 1967, and ancillary data include water temperature, transparency, pH, dissolved oxygen and phytoplankton cell number. The seasonal cycle in water temperature profile shows the hihgest in the end of August with 27$^{\circ}C$, lowest in the middle of February with 0.2$^{\circ}C$. The transparency with Secchi disk reading varied from a maximum 4.0m in fall and a minimum 0.5m or less in early spring and flood season of summer. The pH of the river water varied from 6.5 to 7.3, averaged 6.91 in the surface water and 6.98 in the bottom water, showed little seasonalvariability. The dissolved oxygen in the surface water ranged from 5.93-9.64ml/L, while in the bottom water it ranged from 5.54-9.72 ml/L, and the oxygen saturation never fall below 94%. None thermal, the distribution of pH and content of oxygen, stratifications occurred. An apparent seasonal cycle of primary productivity was observed with remarkably high levels in the spring and fall, the lowest level in the winter. The range of net carbon assimilations showed 3.1-112.6 mgC/㎥/day or 15-427 mgC/㎡/day in spring, 37.0-271.2 mgC/㎥/day or 115-329 mgC/㎡/day in summer, 27.2-168.0 mgC/㎥ /day or 139-415 mgC/㎡/day in fall and 0.5-10.9 mgC/㎥/day or 5-19 mg/㎡/day in winter, respectively. Amount of chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ ranged from a minimum concentration of 0.2-0.3 mg/㎥ in the middle of February and a maximum 4.1-6.7 mg/㎥ in the middle of June. A general increase trend in chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration was noted with increase of the river water temperature.
This study compared acute ammonia toxicity in juvenile rockfish and red sea bream. Oxygen concentration affected ammonia toxicity to aquatic animals. Without aeration, the 96-hr $LC_50$ values of $NH_4^+$and un-ionhized ammonia for juvenil rockfish(3.6g, 6.6cm) were 2.61 and 0.09 mg/l, respectively. The 3-hr $LC_50$ values of $NH_4^+$ for the size of 1.9g (5.2cm) and 3.6g (6.6cm) rockfish, and 1.0g (3.8cm) and 2.0g (5.0cm) red sea bream without aeration were 3.96, 3.94, 4.35 and 3.75 mg/l, respectively. When oxygen level was low, larger fish were more susceptible to ammonia toxicity than smaller one because of stress resulted from low oxygen. However, with aeration, the 96-hr $LC_50$ values of $NH_4^+$ for the size of 1.2g (3.9cm) and 2.3g (5.1cm) red sea bream with aeration were 3.84 and 3.90mg/l, respectively. The 6-hr $LC_50$values of $NH_4^+$ for the size of 3.1g (5.9cm) and 6.2g (7.0cm) rockfish with aeration were 3.83 and 3.94 mg/l, respectively. When oxygen level was high, larger rockfish and red sea bream were less susceptible to ammonia toxicity than smaller ones. The 6 hr-or 96 hr-$LC_50$ values of $NH_4^+$for rockfish with reduced ammonia toxicity. In comparing 96 hr-$LC_50$ values of $NH_4^+$ and un-ionized ammonia for juvenil rockfish with those for juvenil red sea bream, the values for rockfish were lower than for red sea bream. This indicates that juvenile rockfish is more susceptible to ammonia toxicity than juvenile red sea bream.
Monthly samples of surf zone fish at Taechon Beach were collected by a beach seine from June 1995 to May 1996, and analyzed for the species composition, abundance and community structure. Of 26 species identified, Favonigobius gymnauchen, Leiognathus nuchalis, Sillago japonica and Kareius bicoloratus predominated in abundance. In spring, the adults of resident species were dominated. A large number of juveniles of pelagic or demersal fish occupied the surf zone from summer to autumn. Fish numbers and biomass were low in winter. The species composition of the present study showed a similar seasonal trend to that obtained in 1984-85. However, demersal fish such as K. bicoloratus, Repomucenus lunatus, Johnius belengerii and Enedrias fangi, and L. nuchalis were increased, while pelagic fish such as Thrissa koreana, Sardinella zunasi and Konosirus punctatus were diminished. These changes seemed to be related to sedimentation of fine particles for demersal fish and subsequent increase in turbidity for pelagic fish after reclamation in the bay.

Monthly variation in species composition of shallow water fish in Cheonsu Bay were determined using samples collected by a beach seine in the shallow water at Namdang beach from April 2010 to March 2011. The species composition were compared to the data obtained in 1885~86 and in 1993, and factors affecting the long-term change in species composition were analyzed. Fish collected during the study were 25 species, 2,194 individuals and 16,762 g. Chelon haematocheilus were predominated in abundance, accounting 68.5% in the number of individuals. A few number of fish were collected during the cold months from November to April. Abundance was high from July to September by a large catch of juveniles of pelagic fish. Species composition in 1993 did not differ significantly from that in 1985~86 although Fabonigobius gymnauchen living in the fine sediments were increased in abundance. Abundance increase of this gobiid fish was considered to be related to the sedimentation of fine particles due to weakened water circulation after dike construction. The number of species and catch amount in 2010~11 were significantly decreased comparing to those of the former periods; especially in pelagic fish and benthic fish, but C. haematocheilus were greatly increased in abundance. C. haematocheilus is an estuarine fish being able to survive in relatively poor quality of water. This increase seems to be related to fish larvae from the culture net cages recently installed in the inner bay. Recent decrease in abundance of shallow water fish suggested that water quality has been gradually getting poor and recently attained over a critical level for the nursery function of fish.
Two experiments were conducted to study the effect of temperature on growth and survival of yearling sea bass, Lateolabrax japonicus reared from 3$^{\circ}C$ to 33$^{\circ}C$. In the I st experiment, we used yearlings fish averaging 19.2$\pm$0.2 cm/fish (Mean$\pm$S.E.M.) of total length (TL) and 67.0$\pm$1.8 g/fish (Mean$\pm$S.E.M.) of body weight (BW), and we cultured the fish at 3, 6, 9, 12 and 17$^{\circ}C$ for 90 days. In the 2nd experiment, the experimental fish averaging 24.9$\pm$0.1 cm/fish (Mean$\pm$S.E.M) of TL and I 46.4$\pm$3.0 g/fish (Mean$\pm$S.E.M) of BW were reared at 21,24,27,30 and 33$^{\circ}C$ for 90 days. During these experiments, we measured food intake, feed efficiency, survival and growth (TL and BW) in the both experiments. Although food intake of the yearling increased with the temperature, the feed efficiency was only enhanced within the temperature range, from 21 to 27$^{\circ}C$. Growth of yearling was normal within the temperature range from 17 to 3$0^{\circ}C$, but it was stoped or reduced in other temperatures. Survival rate was significantly reduced in 3$^{\circ}C$ from the 1st experiment and in 30 and 33$^{\circ}C$ from the 2nd experiment, but there was no significant difference among other groups.

Young Seriola quinqueradiata associated with drifting seaweeds weye investigated monthly between April 1998 and March 1999 in the coastal area of Tongyeong, Korea, The most abundant types of seaweed were in the genus Sargassum, including S. horneri, S. miyabei and S. thunbergii. The size of seaweed patches varied by season: patches larger than 4 m in diameter were found in May, whereas patches smaller than 0.5 m in diameter were abundant in August and September. Young Serioia quinqueradiata ranged from 11.9 to 135.4 mm in total length were collected from May to July at the study area. The striped bands on the bodies of young Seriola quinqueradiata were developed at 10.0$\~$15.0 mm in total length and increased up to 12 bands with growth, These bands were gradually disappeared at 130.0$\~$150.0 mm in total length. There was no significant relationship between the number of Seriola quinqueradiata collected and the weights of the seaweed patches ($r^2=0.04,\;p<0.05$).
