  • The characterization of chemical properties and analogy of mallufactured origin for the nine potsherds and eleven celadon sherds collected in Wonnae-dong, Daejeon and Yucheon-ri, Buan, respectively were performed by analyzing their body and glaze compositions and compared with previous data reported. The chemical compositions of the body and glaze were determined by XRF and EPMA, respectively. The trace elements of the body were analyzed by ICP-MS. The Seger analysis and principal components analysis were used to compare the major compositions of body and glaze of the potteries we found with previous data. Wonnae-dong's Whiteware (C-1) showed considerably high $SiO_2$ concentration differently from the other potteries. Wonnae-dong's Whiteware (C-2) showed similar characteristics with potteries of Seoul-Kyeongi and Daejeon-Chungnam provinces in chemical compositions of the body and the glaze. Wonnae-dong's celadons (B-1 and B-2) were classified as the group of Daejeon, Chungman provincial potteries in chemical compositions of the body. It was difficult to distinguish the characteristic differences in the Buncheong data between the provinces with the Seger formula analysis and the PCA. Celadon from Yucheon-ri site showed the same characteristics with previous data reported. The results above demonstrated that it is reasonable to study the characterization of potteries and analogy of manufactured origin with a comparison for the chemical compositions of the body and the glaze of the potteries by using the Seger formula analysis and the PCA.

  • This research aims to examine compositional and microstructural properties of grayish-blue-powdered celadon in Wonju Beopcheon-temple site. X-ray fluorescence sequential spectroscopy (XRF) with micro-point analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were applied to determine the chemical composition, microstructure and crystallinity of samples, respectively. As a result, the average compositions of bodies were low silica ($RO_2$) and high flux (RO+$R_2O$). Owing to the high content of calcium oxide the glaze is considered lime type between limealkali type. The body of celdon sheard was found quarts, mullite, microcline, albite. Especially, the body's chemical compositions were compared to the results of previous studies by using a Seger formula. The compositional properties of Grayish-blue-powdered celadon in Wonju Beopcheon-temple site showed diffrently from the the other grayish-blue-powdered celadon.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the correlation through comparative analysis of used materials and manufacturing techniques such as firing characteristics for sherds excavated from celadon kiln site in Punggil-ri, Jangheung. The color difference of the sherds was very wide, and even in the microstructure of the cross section of the glaze layer and the body layer, the celadons, whitewares, blackware, and stonewares could not be characterized because they did not show distinct differences from each other. As a result of estimating the firing temperature through the analysis of constituent minerals and thermal analysis, most of them were estimated to have been fired at 1000℃, but some were fired at high temperatures above 1200℃. It was difficult to clearly distinguish between celadon and whiteware even in the major compositional content of bodies. In the statistical analysis, glaze could be classified three group according to the type of sherds, but the bodies of celadons, whitewares, and blackware classified into one similar group. It is considered that it is not more likely differences in raw materials but some ingredients were removed or added during the purification process. Conclusionally, in this kiln site was found through scientific analysis that there were technical attempts to produce various ceramics, and that the manufacturing techniques and materials of ceramics were in an early stage that was not stabilized.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of Punchong and Whiteware pottery excavated from the kiln site in Dongkok-Town, Gimge. Scientific analysis is carried out to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of the body and glaze. The physical properties indicate the gradual development of the production technology with respect to the kiln operating conditions and period. In chemical properties, the ceramic body is found to be made of raw materials from the same source, but the mixing method depends on the type of Punchong and Whiteware pottery, the production kiln, and period. Whiteware pottery is manufactured with less over 1.3% of the colorant content and more about 1.2% of the $K_2O$ flux content than Punchong pottery. This compositions allow easier vitrification at the same temperature. These characteristics which is low colorant content and high flux content become more prominent as lately. The ceramic glaze is likely to have changed the type of raw materials used after 16~17C, as the contents of MgO, $TiO_2$, MnO, $P_2O_5$ are less three to ten times than 15C.

  • The Department of Fine Art requested the conservation science team to examine the technique of painting with gold powder on the gold painted porcelains, which were made in Korea and China, among the items possessed by National Museum of Korea in order to publish it in the research paper collection of the Exchange Exhibition of Korea and China Porcelains. Among the items possessed by National Museum of Korea, such items were included as, an item of Koryo inlaid celadon (No. Gaesung 106), called the celadon with inlaid work (Korean name: Cheongjasanggam suhawonmun geumchaepyunho), which was decorated in the layer of glaze using gold power, an items of tea cup called "Temmku da wan" (No. Bongwan 10011), which was manufactured in the time of Song dynasty of Chinese history, an items of gold cup called "Siyuchohwamun hwageumwan" (No. Bongwan 2027), and an items of a porcelain called "Siyuwan" (No. Duksoo 3322). As the result of the examination, the stabilizing method of baking the decorated porcelains is similar, after they are painted with the pigment mixed with fine gold powder and the glaze solvent, but the treatment method of the colors is a little different among them. In other words, there is a big difference between them, for example, in the case of Koryo celadon, because the gold coloring was painted carefully one by one on the splendid decorations of inlaid works, while in the case of Chinese porcelains, butterflies or arabesque designs are decorated on the layer of the glaze in the porcelains of no decoration, using the stencil skill. According to the result of this examination, the part of the porcelain, whose layer of gold color was peeled off, could be restored, and as the result of the restoration, it was confirmed how beautiful and splendid the gold porcelain had been at the time of being manufactured.

  • This study compared Pottery, Hwaecheongware, Buncheongware and Whiteware pieces excavated in Hakbong-ri of Chungnam analytically by observing their refined structures and estimating their firing temperature. As a result, base soil components of the specimens were mostly similar to those of typical Buncheongware, but the content of the fluxing agent was rather high, and it seemed that the Whiteware had been made with fairly different components from those of other sherds. Although the glaze showed less difference than base soil in general, the content of the glaze changed according to the decorating methods of Buncheongware. Based on the SEM-EDS analysis, it was found that the base soil components of the ceramics seemingly rather different were actually different and the analysis on the fine crystals of the base soil, the anorthite in the glaze and crystals in the ironing part, and the components and contents of white earth showed there were some noticeable points in the process of making each of the sherds. In the refiring experiment to estimate the firing temperature, mostly similar results were gained as $1150^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$ for pottery, $1100^{\circ}C$ to $1150^{\circ}C$ for Hwaecheongware, and $1100^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$ for iron-brown Buncheongware however, the results imply good quality Whiteware was burnt at above $1300^{\circ}C$ while bad quality Whiteware was burnt at a temperature far lower than that. Thus, there was clear difference between Whiteware sherds and other kinds of sherds.

  • Selecting appropriate materials can be significantly important to make different image in the product and also give distinguished express to the users. A material for the ceramic product surface consists of the combination between a glaze and a body, and each attribution of materials and the way of the combination creates different texture and color. This study analyzes the difference between visually and tactually sensibility of ceramic surface to through the simulating both visual and tactual stimulation by verbal evaluation method. Totally 13 adjectives are selected from homepage of local and global ceramic product brand. And totally 12 ceramic samples are created with the consideration of color, glossiness and roughness. These 12 samples are the combination between four ceramic bodies (White porcelain, Celadon_c, Sancheong and Black soil) and three glazes (Transparent, Celadon_g, Black glaze). The respondents of first survey were asked to rub, touch and hold before evaluating the sensibility of ceramic surface and other respondents of second survey were asked to evaluate visual images of 9 samples which showed meaningfully difference from first survey. The surface which scored the highest sensibility with the first survey was 'pure' on a surface of White porcelain body with Transparent glaze, and the lowest was also 'pure' on a surface of Black soil body with Transparent glaze. The highest score in the second survey was the same result as the first survey, but the lowest scored 'casual' and the surface was Black soil body with Celadon glaze. By the comparison with two survey results, not every sensibility is same result shown as the first survey and the second survey, but the tactile sensibilities such as 'artistic', 'luxurious', 'sensuous', 'romantic' and 'mysterious' can be experienced by via visual materials of ceramic surfaces.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the properties of traditional Korean ash glazes by using locally available sources; 10 kinds of grain stems,2 kinds of husks (pod, chaff), and 4 kinds of vegetables (spinach, radish leaf and stem, pumpkin leaf and stem, pepper stem), and to develop their practical uses as ash glazes. The test results of these ash glazes indicate that these ashes can be classified into four categories. The first group, which includes perilla stem ash, sesame stem ash, black bean stem ash and red-bean stem ash, shows strong milky white due to relatively lower content of $SiO_2$, and relatively higher content of CaO and P$_2$O$\_$5/ content (10% higher than others), and their glazes were found to be suitable for opaque glaze as they show relatively stable bright greenish color. The second group includes pepper stem ash, spinach ash, pod ash, radish leaf and stem ash, and bean stem ash, and this group was found to contain even quantity of every component. And their glaze show somewhat greenish color because of especially high content of MgO and more than 2% of Fe$_2$ $O_3$. They were found to be suitable for basic glaze of IRABO glaze. The third group, which includes com stalk ash, white bean ash, pumpkin leaf and stem ash, has more $SiO_2$ and Al$_2$ $O_3$ than other ashes, and it also contains 3~5% of Fe$_2$ $O_3$. As a result of those components, this third group shows the greatest change of color and chroma, and was found to be suitable glazes as basic glaze of Temmoku and black glazes. The fourth group (reed ash, rice straw ash, indian millet stalk ash and chaff ash) has as much as 45~82% of $SiO_2$ and relatively lower content of Fe$_2$ $O_3$ and P$_2$ $O_3$. This group shows blue or greenish white color, and was found to be suitable as the basic glaze of white glaze.

  • The effect of juvenile hormone analogue(JHA, Manina) on larval feeding duration, pupation ratio, cocoon weight, and cocoon shell weight in the present commercial parent and hybrid silkworm stocks were investigated. Topical applications of JHA on parent silkworm stocks were to prolong larval duration, but results of response on those stocks were not consistent. Especially the JHA on Jam 121, Jam 123 and Jam 138 did not play a role in larval duration, whereas that on Jam 114 was most effective in prolongation more than two days, compared with the controls. subsequent prolongation of feeding duration resulted in increase of cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight of most parent silkworm stocks, while Jam 114 showed decrease in cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight in spite of prolonged feeding duration of two days. Unlike the parent silkworm stocks, durations of feeding period in all hybrid silkworm stocks were prolonged about one day. Treatments of JHA on the hybrid stocks gave rise to increase of cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight, and especially were most effective in Sasung-jam, Eunbaek-jam and Samgwang-jam. Although treatments of JHA seemed to have no harmful effect on physiology of parent silkworm stocks as well as that of hybrid stocks, the JHA retarded pupation ratio of some parent silkworm stocks such as Jam 122, 131, 135 and 138 by about 10%.
