  • The total amount of monoterpenoids in A. artemisiifolia var. elatior leaves was increased continuously after Apr. and the highest amount was in Jul. The major monoterpenoids in A. artemisiifolia var. elatior leaves were consisted of 29 compounds and were dominated by No. 2, octene, α -pinene, β -myrcene ,1,3,6-octatrine, endo-borneol and (-)-bornyl acetate. The allelopathic effects of A. artemisiifolia var elatior leaves on the roots and shoots elongation of the selected plants were studied and there were significant allelopathic effects. The effects were much different between the selected plants and the effects signifcantly became higher with the quantity of leaves used in the experiment. The Lactuca sativa, Achyranthes japonica, and Oenothera odorta were suffered much higher effects than the other species. The allelopathic effects were also different with the leaves sampled in different seasons and the effects in july were found a little higher than in June and May.

  • The influence of low temperature treatment on Raphanus sativus L, stimulating the conversion of sexual reproduction period over vegetative reproduction period. was verified by the research of many scholars, and the low temperature limit and the time period to obtain the desired results were reported by Miller and Yamamoto et al. This paper will report the results of an experiments as to determine the proper temperature regulation period by determining the sensitivity stimulation period during the growing period of plants. Since the results of this paper alone are inconclusive. further research will be carried out and reported in the future by this author.

  • Lack of seedling vigor is considered a serious deterrent to use of broadleafed birdsfoot trefoil (Lorus comicul~rus L.). Our objectives were to compare early seedling growth of broadleafed birdsfoot trefoil cultivar "MO-20" and the large-seeded accession 302921 at $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. in controlled-environment chambers. Cabon dioxide exchange rate (CER) was measured in a closed or open system using infrared gas analysis. Dark respiration rate was measured manometrically. Net carbon accumulated per day and growth analysis of the seedlings were calculated. Initial seed mass of 302921 was 3.5 times larger and final cotyledon area was 2 times larger than those of MO-20, and early seedling growth was better. But, from 3 weeks after emergence until the end of the test period at $25^{\circ}C$, MO-20 showed higher CER per unit leaf area and faster dry weight accumulation than did 302921. Compared with $25^{\circ}C$, growth of MO-20 at $15^{\circ}C$ was suppressed more than that of 302921. Dark respiration rate of MO-20 was slightly higher than that for 302921, but not COz uptake per day for MO-20 was highest at$25^{\circ}C$ and lowest at $25^{\circ}C$. The relative growth rate (RGR) of MO-20 was higher than 302921 at $25^{\circ}C$ due to high net assimilation rate, but there was little difference in RGR between entries at $15^{\circ}C$.}C$.

  • The allelochemicals from aqueous extracts of A. artemisiifolia var. elatior leaves and roots were analyzed and 60 compounds in the leaf and 53 compounds in the roots were inspected. The main compounds were acids,. especially phenolic acids and some non-acids. The total amount of compounds in the aqueous extracts of A. artemisiifolia var. elatior leaves was higher than in the roots. The aqueous extracts had much high inhibiting effects on the germination and seedling elongation of selected plants. In both cases, the inhibiting effects were very different with different selected plants and increased significantly as the concentration of aqueous extracts increased. Capsicum annum, Achyranthes japonica, and Oenothera odorta plants were suffered more significant inhibition effects than Raphnus sativus, Cucumis sativus, Brassica camperstris plants. Aqueous extracts from leaves had slightly higher inhibition effects than the aqueous extracts from the roots.

  • In order to determine the effects of cytokinin and auxin on organ formation from tissue of garlic cloves, leaf blades and basal tissues contained meristem of garlic (Allium sativum L.) cloves harvested in 1979 (old cloves) and 1980 (new cloves) were explanted on a MS medium contained various levels of BA ($N^6$-benzyl amino purine), NAA (naphthalene acetic acid), and 2, 4-D (2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid). And some of the new cloves were explanted on a media contained BA and NAA after chilling treatment at $4^{\circ}C$ for 10, 20, 30 and 40 days. 1. In a culture of leaf blades of old cloves, shoots were differentiated on a medium supplemented with 2mg/l of BA and NAA. 2. Callus was grown as a quite straw-coloured globular mass on a medium contained 0.2 or 2mg/l 2.4-D. 3. As subcultures of globular calli, shoots and roots were differentiated on a medium contained 2mg/l BA and 0.5 or 1 mg/l NAA, whereas no shoots was shown on a conterol. 4. Shoots were differentiated in a culture of leaf blades of new cloves, but they were not in an old cloves in control, and better effect was shown on a medium contained 2mg/l BA and 1mg/l NAA. However shoots were no differentiated from leaf blades chilled at $4^{\circ}C$ for 30 or 40 days at the same condition. 5. Large numbers of adventitious shoots could be obtained from basal region of garlic cultured on a medium contained 1mg/l BA and 4mg/l NAA, or 2mg/l BA and 2mg/l NAA.
