  • Distances or dissimilarities among units are assumed to be symmetric in most cases of multidimensional scaling(MDS); consequently, it is not an easy task to deal with asymmetric distances. Current asymmetric MDS still face difficulties in the interpretation of results. This study proposes a simpler asymmetric MDS that utilizes the order statistic of an asymmetric matrix. The proposed Web method demonstrates that some influences among objects are visualized by direction, size and shape of arrow to ease the interpretability of users.

  • This paper presents an efficient signature recognition method by using the hybrid similarity criterion, which is in inverse proportion to distance and in proportion to correlation between the images. The distance is applied to express the spacial property of image, and the correlation is also applied to express the statistical property. The proposed criterion provides the robust recognition to both the geometrical variations such as position, size, and rotation and the shape variation. The normalized cross-correlation(NCC), which is calculated by considering 4 directions based on the histogram of binary image, is applied to express rapidly and accurately the similarity between the images. The proposed method has been applied to the problem for recognizing the 20 truck images of 288*288 pixels and the 105(3 persons * 35 images) signature images of 256*256 pixels, respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a superior recognition performance that appears the image characters well. Especially, the hybrid criterion of NCC and ordinal distance has a superior recognition performance to the hybrid criterion using city-block or Euclidean distance.

  • Similarity has been considered as one of basic concepts of cognitive psychology which is useful for explaining cognitive structure and process. MDS models(Shepard, 1964; Nosofsky, 1991) and Contrast model(Tversky, 1977) were proposed as early models of similarity comparison process. But, there have been a lot of theoretical doubts about the conceptual validity of similarity as a result of empirical findings which could not be explained by early models. Goldstone(1994) assumed that similarity could be defined by alignment processes, and suggested structural alignment as a prospective alternative for solving conceptual controversies so far. In this study, basic assumption and algorithms of MDS models(Shepard, 1944; Nosofsky, 1991) and Contrast model(Tversky, 1977) were described shortly and some theoretical limitations such as arbitrariness of selective attention and correlated structures were discussed as well. The conceptual characteristics and algorithms of SIAM(Goldstone, 1994) were described and how it has been applied to cognitive psychology areas such as categorization, conceptual combination, and analogical reasoning were reviewed. Finally, some theoretical limitations related with data-driven processing and alternative processing and possible directions for structural alignment were discussed.

  • Among the discussions on affective representation, the first is to explain the affective representation in the dimensions, and the second is to explain the affective representation according to the modality. In previous studies, to explain affective representation, valence models (signed valence, unsigned valence) and Modality-generality models (modality-general, modality-specific) were presented. In this study, we compared models presented in the previous study using the recently published ASMR to confirm which models explain affective representation well. The data used in this study were behavioral rating values collected by Kim & Kim (2022), and these were obtained for ASMR stimuli that were divided into three affective types (negative, neutral, and positive) and two modalities (auditory and audiovisual). Then, a multidimensional scaling, a representational similarity analysis with a two-way repeated measures ANOVA, and a multiple regression analysis with a two-way repeated measures ANOVA were performed. The results revealed that signed valence and modality-general distinguished between affective types of stimuli better than unsigned valence and modality-specific. Similar to the results of multidimensional scaling, the results of a representational similarity analysis and a multiple regression also showed that the signed valence and modality-general significantly explained affective representation better than the unsigned valence and the modality-specific. These results suggest that the model in which positive and negative are located at the opposite ends of the one dimension explains the affective representation of ASMR well, and that the affective representation was consistent regardless of modality.

  • In this research, the similarity search algorithms are provided for large video data streams. A video stream that consists of a number of frames can be expressed by a sequence in the multidimensional data space, by representing each frame with a multidimensional vector By analyzing various characteristics of the sequence, it is partitioned into multiple video segments and clusters which are represented by hyper-rectangles. Using the hyper-rectangles of video segments and clusters, similarity functions between two video streams are defined, and two similarity search algorithms are proposed based on the similarity functions algorithms by hyper-rectangles and by representative frames. The former is an algorithm that guarantees the correctness while the latter focuses on the efficiency with a slight sacrifice of the correctness Experiments on different types of video streams and synthetically generated stream data show the strength of our proposed algorithms.

  • In this study, we research the robust speech recognition for the syllables and phoneme units with the feature parameter including the voiced-unvoiced measures for the confusable words. In order to make it possible, we propose the measure representing the voiced-unvoiced degree by using the HPS(Harmonic Product Spectrum) information, used on pitch detection. We proposed this measures with the sharpnes, peak count and height measure of HPS. We reconstructed the feature parameter including this measures, then we performs the speech recognition experiments and compared with the typical feature parameters under the CVC type confusable syllables DB.

  • Previous emotion studies employing facial expressions have focused on the differences between age groups for each of the emotion categories. Instead, Kim (2021) has compared representations of facial expressions in the lower-dimensional emotion space. However, he reported descriptive comparisons without statistical significance testing. This research used representational similarity analysis (Kriegeskorte et al., 2008) to directly compare empirical datasets from young, middle-aged, and old groups and conceptual models. In addition, individual differences multidimensional scaling (Carroll & Chang, 1970) was conducted to explore individual weights on the emotional dimensions for each age group. The results revealed that the old group was the least similar to the other age groups in the empirical datasets and the valence model. In addition, the arousal dimension was the least weighted for the old group compared to the other groups. This study directly tested the differences between the three age groups in terms of empirical datasets, conceptual models, and weights on the emotion dimensions.

  • A new video segmentation algorithm for segmentation-based video coding is proposed. The method uses a new criterion based on similarities in both motion and brightness. Brightness and motion information are incorporated in a single segmentation procedure. The actual segmentation is accomplished using a region-growing technique based on the watershed algorithm. In addition, a tracking technique is used in subsequent frames to achieve a coherent segmentation through time. Simulation results show that the proposed method is effective in determining object boundaries not easily found using the statistic criterion alone.

  • As sustainable growth has been emphasized in the field of transportation, the railway system has been promoted as an environmentally-friendly transport mode. However, mode shifts from other transport modes to railway have been sluggish. In this context, to enhance the understanding of railway's competitive advantages and disadvantages, this research evaluates travelers'preferences for public transport modes for inter-regional trips: such understanding should make it possible to formulate effective policy for promoting railways. To this end, passenger recognition of competitive transport modes has been measured by applying multidimensional scaling analysis for six major inter-regional public transport services - KTX, ITX-Samaeul, Mugunghwa-ho, premium express bus, general express bus, and airline. As a result, we can conceptualize the recognition similarity in two-dimensional space, and understand how travelers perceive the six major transport modes.
