Induced seismicity has been observed in the relation with lots of anthropogenic influence and at variety of geological conditions over the last several decades. This paper reviews those induced earthquakes and compares with each other as well as with natural tectonic earthquakes. Hydraulic fracturing is commonly used to enhance the permeability through new cracks in the rock formation. The process triggers the induced seismicity, which can give crucial information on the fracture network and oil/gas migration. In the similar way, unintentionally induced events during the production procedure of the field, dam reservoir, minig activity, or wastewater injection can be used to give insight into various hydrodynamic processes and changes of reservoir properties at a various scales. The general conclusion summarizes the uncertainty or limitations of knowledge up to date and presents some issues to be dealt with in the future research.
Induced seismicity related to four energy development technologies that involve fluid injection or withdrawal: geothermal energy, conventional oil and gas development including enhanced oil recovery (EOR), shale gas recovery, and carbon capture and storage (CCS) is reviewed by literature investigation. The largest induced seismic events reported in the technical literature are associated with projects that did not balance the large volume of fluids injected into, or extracted from the underground reservoir. A statistical observation shows that the net volume of fluid injected and/or extracted may serve as a proxy for changes in subsurface stress conditions and pore pressure, and other factors. Energy technology projects that are designed to maintain a balance between the amount of fluid being injected and the amount of fluid being withdrawn, such as geothermal and most oil and gas development, may produce fewer induced seismic events than technologies that do not maintain fluid balance, such as long-term wastewater disposal wells and CCS projects.

Among human-induced seismicity, fluid production has been one of the causes. In this report, the mechanism that causes an earthquake due to a decrease in the fluid pressure inside the reservoir during fluid extraction is summarized. As case studies, the Lacq gas field in France, the Cerro Prieto geothermal field in Mexico, and the Groningen gas field in the Netherlands, which have become issue recently, were introduced. It is showed that fluid production, ground subsidence, and the presence of existing faults were closely related with the induced seismicity. Therefore, for the development of oil or gas field and geothermal field, it is important to investigate the presence of faults that may cause earthquakes in the reservoir, to monitor ground subsidence during production in real time, and to control production.
The Seoul metropolitan area is densely populated with 40 percent of Korean people and quite weak to the seismic hazard. According to the analysis of historical documents, the largest earthquake occurred in this area is MMI VIII-IX acompanying with a large shaking, collapse of stone walls, collapse of houses, and many casualties. Two times of damaging earthquakes occurred in the first century (A.D. 27, 89), and there was a long quiet period of about 1430 years. Another big earthquakes re-occurred three times in the 16-17 century (1518, 1613, 1692) and then a quiet period has continued to the present time. Just after Seoul earthquake in 1518, aftershocks occurred almost 19 days consecutively and many triggered earthquakes occurred not only in Seoul metropolitan area but also in Hwanghae province, northern Korea. It indicates that the largest potential earthquake in and around Seoul is MMI VIII-IX with a long occurrence period of about 1400-1500 years.
Since the frequency of the earthquake occurrence in Korean peninsular is continuously increasing, the possibility that massive landslides are triggered by earthquake is also growing in Korea. Previously, the landslide is known to be induced by large magnitude earthquake, whose magnitude is larger than 6.0. However, the landslide can be induced by only small magnitude earthquake, especially in the fully saturated soil. Therefore, the susceptibility of landslide caused by small magnitude earthquake in fully saturated soil is analyzed in this study. For that, the topographical and geological characteristics of the site were obtained and managed by GIS software. In the procedure of the study, slope angle, cohesion, friction angle, unit weight of soil were obtained and constructed as a spatial database layer. Combining these data sets in a dynamic model based on Newmark's displacement analysis, the landslide displacements were estimated in each grid cell. In order to check out the possibility of the earthquake induced landslides, the level of the groundwater table is varied from dry to 80% saturated soil. In addition, in order to analyze the effect of the magnitude of earthquake and distance to epicenter, four different earthquakes epicenters were considered in the study area.

During an earthquake, there are three components of excitation : horizontal excitation of the ground, vertical excitation of the pile due to superstructure feedback produced by vertical excitation of the ground, and the seawater excitation by the vertical ground shaking, that is, "the seaquake." These excitations could have effects on the pore pressure buildup mode induced in the near-field of open-ended pile and the soil plugs in open-ended pipe piles installed at offshore sites. While the ground and pile excitation could be modeled by exciting the soil and pile with simulated motions, seaquake excitation induced by the vertical ground shaking can be modeled by pulsing the water pressure at the seabed. The objectives of this study were to observe buildup trend for the porewater pressures developed in near-field of open-ended pipe pile installed in the calibration chamber during the simulated earthquake and seaquake and, also to confirm the cause for reduction of soil plugging according to pore pressure buildup. During the simulated horizontal seismic motion, there was no upward flow through soil plug because the similar magnitude of excess porewater pressure were occurred at the top and under the toe of soil plug. During the horizontal seismic motion, relatively higher hydraulic gradients caused upward flow in the soil plug and then the degradation of plugging resistance was about 20%. During seaquake, in the case of the open-ended pile installed in a deep sea with more than 220m of water depth, soil plug failed completely because of high upward hydraulic gradients through soil plug.soil plug.

Focal mechanism of the real and imaginary faults in the western coast of Japan has been assumed by examining the previous studies on the seismicity, seismic gap, fault behaviors, seismic zoning, and faults. In the area of no seismic information, the focal mechanism has been assumed to have the maximum influence on the tsunami height in the eastern coast of Korea. The tsunami height in a particular point of the eastern coast of Korea can vary up to 7 orders with the variation of the strike of the fault in a particular source point of the western coast of Japan with constant magnitude. Tsunami scenario DB including tile arrival times and tsunami heights has been constructing by using the assumed focal mechanism of the western coast of Japan. Tsunami warning system will be reinforced by using this tsunami scenario DB near future.

A hydro-mechanical study was performed to analyze the relationship between the magnitude of injection-induced seismicity and shut-in. In hydraulic analysis, the suspension of fluid injection makes the pore pressure gradient smaller while the pore pressure at the pressure front can reach the critical value for several hours after shut-in, which leads to the additional slip with wider area than during injection. The hydro-mechanical numerical analysis was performed to model the simplified fault system, and simulated the largest magnitude earthquake during shut-in stage. The effect of the abrupt suspension of fluid injection on the large magnitude earthquake was investigated in comparison with the continuous injection. In addition to the pore pressure distribution, it was found that the geometry of multiple faults and the stress redistribution are also important in evaluating the magnitude of the induced seismicity.
