  • In load sharing model, the load is supported by the contacting asperities and the lubricants. The asperity contact area of two sliding surfaces are relatively very small as compared with the apparent contact area. The asperity contact pressure is relatively higher than the lubricant pressure. With the combined effect of asperity and lubricant pressure, the surface roughness and temperature rise must be considered to calculate the lubricant film thickness of the line-contact bearing.

  • In this paper, the thermal effects on the performance of floating ring journal bearing are investigated theoretically. The numerical analyses include pressure drop at inner film due to a centrifugal force, fluid momentum effects of supply oil into inner film and thermal effects in lubricating films. All performance data are presented as the rotating speed of journal from 10,000 rpm to 70,000 rpm.

  • In the high rotational speed and pressure state, the leakage flow rate of the axial piston pump is one of the serious problems and make great reasons to decrease the volume efficiency. In this study, tribology characteristics is clarified for the hydrostatic slipper bearing in the swash plate type axial piston pump, by means of theoretical analysis for the different shape of the hydrostatic slipper bearing. It was analyzed by Mathcad software and used equal conditions at $0^{\circ}$ swash plate angle in each model. The results show that performance characteristics of the swash plate type axial piston pump are significantly influenced by the shape of the hydrostatic slipper bearing.

  • An analysis model for an elliptical fluid film bearing is described. The principles of hydrodynamic lubrication are outlined together with an expanded version of the governing pressure field equation as related to elliptical journal bearing. Finite element method approximations are given for the pressure field equation and a temperature model, both related to the fluid film thickness. The thermal effects in the lubricant viscosity, lubricant film thickness, variation of the journal rotating speed and influence of turbulence are investigated in this paper A finite element model and an iterative computational process are described, whereby full simultaneously converged field solutions for fluid film thickness, temperature, viscosity, pressure, stiffness and damping coefficient are obtained.

  • The dynamic behavior of rotor-bearing system has been investigated using finite element method. A procedure is presented for dynamic modeling of rotor-bearing system which consists of shaft elements, rigid disk, flexible bearing and support structure. A finite element model including the effects of rotary inertia, shear deformation, gyroscopic moments is developed. Linear stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated for 2 lobe sleeve bearing. The whirl frequency, mode shape, stability and unbalance response of rotor system including effects of bearing coefficient and support structures are calculated.

  • The hydraulic piston using a hydrostatic bearing has been used widely due to its satisfying performance at very high pressurized circumstance and relative higher power density in comparison to conventional one. For high pressurization, enhanced efficiency and long durability of the hydraulic piston, the design of hydrostatic bearing is at issue, which is installed between piston shoe and swash plate. The performance of the hydrostatic bearing is influenced significantly by the assembly of the piston shoe consisting of circular land and recess. In this study, to estimate the performance of the hydrostatic bearing, the characteristics for lubrication of the assembly of the piston shoe were investigated by measuring a leakage rate of hydraulic fluid under an experimental condition, where a rotating velocity of the piston, hydraulic pressure and temperature of the hydraulic fluid were changed systematically. In addition, a film thickness of the hydraulic fluid on the piston shoe was measured and compared to theoretical one.

  • Journal bearings support rotors using fluid film between the rotor and the stator. Generally, journal bearings are used in large rotor systems such as turbines in a power plant, because even in high-speed and load conditions, journal bearing systems run in a stable condition. To enhance the reliability of journal-bearing systems, in this paper, we study health-diagnosis algorithms that are based on the supervised learning method. Specifically, this paper focused on defining the unit of features, while other previous papers have focused on defining various features of vibration signals. We evaluate the features of various lengths or units on the separable ability basis. From our results, we find that one cycle datum in the time-domain and 60 cycle datum in the frequency domain are the optimal datum units for real-time journal-bearing diagnosis systems.

  • In sliding bearings, viscous friction due to high shear acting on the bearing surface raises the oil temperature. One of the mechanisms responsible for generating the load-carrying capacity in parallel surfaces is known as the viscosity wedge effect. In this paper, we investigate the effect of film-temperature boundary conditions on the thermohydrodynamic (THD) lubrication of parallel slider bearings. For this purpose, the continuity equation, Navier-Stokes equation, and the energy equation with temperature-viscosity-density relations are numerically analyzed using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT. Two different film-temperature boundary conditions are adopted to investigate the pressure generation mechanism. The temperature and viscosity distributions in the film thickness and flow directions were obtained, and the factors related to the pressure generation in the equation of motion were examined in detail. It was confirmed that the temperature gradients in the film and flow directions contribute heavily to the thermal wedge effect, due to which parallel slider bearing can not only support a considerable load but also reduce the frictional force, and its effect is significantly changed with the film-temperature boundary conditions. The present results can be used as basic data for THD analysis of surface-textured sliding bearings; however, further studies on various film-temperature boundary conditions are required.

  • Precise propulsion shafting alignment of ships is very important to prevent damage of its support bearings due to excessive reaction forces caused by hull deflection, forces acted on propeller and crankshaft, and so forth. In this paper, a new iterative shafting alignment calculation procedure considering the interaction between shaft deflection and oil film pressure of Sterntube Journal Bearing (SJB) bush with single or multiple slopes is proposed. The procedure is based on a pressure analysis to evaluate distributed equivalent support stiffness of SJB by solving Reynolds equation and a deflection analysis of shafting system by a finite element method based on Timoshenko beam theory. SJB is approximated with multi-point biaxial elastic supports equally distributed to its length. Their initial stiffness values are estimated from dynamic reaction force calculated by assuming SJB as single rigid support. Then, the shaft deflection and the support stiffness of SJB are sequentially and iteratively calculated by applying a criteria on deflection variation between sequential calculation results. To demonstrate validity and applicability of the proposed procedure for optimal slope design of SJB, numerical analysis results for a shafting system are described.
