A Study on the Minimum Oil Film Thickness of Crankshaft Main Bearings in Engine (엔진 메인 베어링에서의 최소유막두께에 관한 연구)

  • The minimum oil film thicknesses (MOFT) in the crankshaft main bearings of a 1.5 liter, L-4, gasoline engine are measured and calculated to study the dynamically loaded engine bearing. The MOFT are measured simultaneously at each of the five main bearings using the total capacitance method(TCM). To improve the reliability of the TCM, a reasonable determination method of bearing clearance is introduced and the effects of bearipg cavitation and aeration on the test results are analyzed. Also the crankshaft is grounded by means of a slip ring instead of the friction contact method to improve the test precision. The calculation is based on the model of statically determinate beam, short bearing approximation and Mobility method. From the comparison between the measured and calculated MOFT curves, it is found that a qualitative similarity exists between them, but in all cases, measured MOFT are smaller than that of calculated. The crankshaft vibration and the imbalance of the load distribution between the engine bearings have important influence upon the MOFT curve. So it is found that the calculation result from the model of the statically determinate beam has a limitation in predicting bearing performance.

  • Point contact film thickness in elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) is analyzed by the image processing method for the monochromatic incident light. Interference between the reflected lights both on Cr coating of glass disk and on super finished ball makes circular fringes, which are regarded as film thickness together with numbering of fringe order. In this study, we developed technology to measure the film thickness by analyzing dark and bright intensity waves which results from monochrome green light. Two typical fringe patterns only with intensity values 3re examined for the measurement of point contact EHL film thickness. We expect that this technology will give valuable clue to improve color image processing analysis for high resolution of EHL film thickness with white incident light.

  • In this paper, film thickness and temperature distribution are measured in EHL point contact at high slip ratios. Infrared temperature mapping with two band pass fillers. proposed by Ausherman (1976). is used to measure temperature distribution. And the optical interferornetric method with two filters (red and green filters) is used to measure film thickness. Result of experiment showed that temperature rising at film and ball surface occurred very dramatically in Dimple zone. As slip velocity, slip ratio and load increased, size of Dimple and temperature rising became more large In addition, Position and shape of Dimple we changed by slip ratios, and increasing of Dimple size decreased traction coefficient. In short, it is appointed that the Dimple phenomenon be developed by the effect of viscosity wedge.

  • A cylindrical type of self-controlled restrictor is designed for hydrostatic bearing of crank shaft for a grinding wheel spindle. The effect of operation parameters, clearance between spindle and housing on bearing stiffness are analyzed to determine the optimum conditions of operation parameters. The lowest values of the supply pressure and the loads by the theoretical and experimental results assuming oil film thickness and shape of pocket are compared.

  • The film thickness and shape of elastohydrodynamic lubrication is measured by optical interferometer, which is the most precise method for EHL film measurement. However, the interpretation of the image pattern from optical viscometer is not simple for two-dimensional shape. A newly developed method of image processing makes it possible to evaluate the film thickness and shape in every point of contact region with two dimensional aspects. In this study, we captured the film shape of EHL film by the monochromatic incident light and analyzed the film thickness with the image processing method, which uses phase shift method.   • Many research of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) has been performed under the condition of steady state loding. However, mechanical elements undergo severe high loads that are fluctuating in general. Conventional numerical method for the circular contact of EHL study has a difficulty in converging the film pressure and thickness especially in high load of steady state. In this work, multigrid multilevel method expels the convergence problem under the condition of high load and very stable convergence is obtained under the dynamic loading condition over 1.0GPa. Several results of dynamic loading condition are shown and compared with those of steady state condition.

  • The basic mechanism of lubrication between the piston ring and the cylinder wall is developed theoretically under the assumption of a reciprocating and dynamically loaded slider-bearing pair of parabolic form and smooth plane. A numerical computation for the prediction in cyclic variations of film thickness, net lubricant flow and frictional behaviour is attempted, and the influenec on the performance characteristics due to the ring height, ring face radius of curvature and the degree of offset, is also examined. The computational procedures develeped for a single ring system are extended and applied further to the complex problem of a ring pack system. It is well known that the ring pressure which is the total load on a ring, can be obtained from either an experimental measurement or a gas flow analysis. In this work, the latter of a gas low analysis method was used to calculate the pressures. It is remarked that the work done was focused on the role of flow continuity and lubricant starvation within the ring pack lubrication.

The crankshaft is grounded by means of a slip ring. A scissor type linkage system was developed to measure the MOFT and bearing temperature. The effects of engine speed, load and oil viscosity on the measured and calculated minimum oil film thicknesses are investigated at 1500 to 5500 rpm. From the comparison between the measured and calculated MOFT, it is found that a qualitative similarity exists between them, but in all cases, the measured MOFT are smaller than those calculated.
