Four New Species of the Genus Pholcus (Araneae: Pholcidae) from Korea (한국산 유령거미속(거미목: 유령거미과)의 4 신종)

  • Four new species of Pholcus, Pholcus chiakensis n. sp., P. gajiensis n. sp., P. juwangensis n. sp. and P. palgongensis n. sp., are described and figured. The key for the new species, along with the seventeen species previously recorded from Korea, is also provided.

The Antioxidation Effect of Ethanol Extracts from Ciona intestinalis and Ciona savignyi (유령멍게(Ciona intestinalis)와 노랑꼭지유령멍게(Ciona savignyi) 에탄올 추출물의 항산화 효과)

  • Ciona intestinalis and Ciona savignyi have been designated as hazardous species because they have caused great damages as they appeared in ports, ships, and farms in Korea in large amount. Therefore, in terms of using them, the possibility of use as cosmetic ingredients was examined. C. intestinalis and C. savignyi were treated with 70% ethanol to make an extract and then their antioxidant activity was measured. C. intestinalis and C. savignyi showed 71.80% and 21.40% of DPPH at 20mg/mL of extract, respectively. ABTS was 95.47% and 27.53%, while nitric oxide production inhibitory ability was 97.47% and 88.90%, respectively. Total phenol content was 0.081 and 0.041 mg gallic acid/mg extract, respectively. As a result, C. intestinalis showed somewhat higher antioxidant activity than C. savignyi. It is confirmed that these extracts are animal-derived antioxidants that can be used as cosmetic materials.

  • 산림연료 특성별 산불피해도 분석을 위하여 산불피해의 조사지역은 2009년, 2010년 산불이 발생했던 강원도 고성지역과 양양지역, 강릉지역과 삼척지역을 조사 대상지역으로 선정하였으며, 고성군의 경우 숲구조가 유령림인 활엽수림이 2개소, 칩엽수림 1개소, 장령림인 활엽수림 2개소로 총 5개소, 양양군은 숲구조가 유령림인 침엽수림이 1개소, 장령림 침엽수림 2개소 총 3개소, 삼척시의 경우는 숲구조가 유령림인 침엽수림이 1개소 외 대조구 장령림 침엽수림 1개소, 강릉시의 경우 숲구조가 장령림인 침엽수림이 3개소 총 13개소를 각각 대상지로 선정하였다. 산림연료 특성별 산불피해도를 조사하기 위한 조사지 규모는 $10m{\times}10m$로 하였으며, 현장 조사 항목은 조사지내의 산불피해 상태, 조사지 지형특성으로 나누어 조사를 실시하였다. 산불피해 상태는 산불진행방향, DBH, 총수고, 지하고, 고사여부, 편면연소, 밀도, 수간피해율, 수관피해율 등을 조사하였고, 조사지의 지형특성을 알아보기 위해 조사지의 위치(GPS), 해발고도, 사면방위, 산지경사, 지형을 조사하였다. 현장조사를 위한 조사장비로는 조사지의 지형도, 야장, 디지털 카메라, GPS, 수고측정기, 직경테이프, 캘리퍼, 50m 줄자 2개, 2m 폴대, 클리노메타, 바인더끈 등을 사용하였다. 산불사례 현장조사를 통해 임목고사여부, 편면연소, 수간피해율, 수관피해율 등의 산불피해 특성을 분석한 결과 연료의 특성별 유령림과 장령림의 편면연소율은 유령림은 97.3%, 장령림은 16.5%로 유령림의 편면연소율이 장령림보다 80.8% 더 피해를 받는 것으로 나타났으며, 수관피해율은 유령림은 95.4%, 장령림은 19.9%로 유령림의 수관피해율이 장령림보다 75.5%더 피해를 입은 것으로 조사 되었다. 또한 임목고사율은 유령림은 73.8%, 장령림은 24.5%로 유령림의 임목고사율이 장령림보다 49.3% 더 피해를 받는 것으로 분석 되었다.

  • A study on marine sponges was conducted by SCUBA diving at Ulleungdo Island and Gageodo Island, Korea during the period from July 2000 to October 2001. Two species, Clathria (Clathria) gombawuiensis n. sp. and Clathria (C) gageoensis n. sp., are new to the fauna of sponges. Clathria (C) gombawuiensis n. sp. closely relates to Clathria (C) conica Levi, 1963 based on the type of spicules, but differs in size of spicules and growth form, Clathria (C) conica has not small toxa. Clathria (C) gageoensis n. sp. is similar to Clathria (C) hexagonopora Levi, 1963, but it differs in size of spicules and growth form, also Clathria (C) hexagonopora has not small toxa.

  • Phalcus joreangensis sp. nov.(Pholcidae) is described with illustrations. This species is very similar to Pholcus clavimaculatus Zhu and Song, 1999 in shape of uncus and embolus of male palpal organ. But it is distinguished from the latter by size of uncus, length of embolus, shape of procursus and trochanter spur, and lengths of 3rd and 4th leg.

Methodological Consideration for Estimating Growing Stock of Young Forests based on Early Growth Characteristics of Standing Trees in Korea (우리나라 입목의 초기 생장 특성에 따른 유령림의 임목축적 산출방안 고찰)

  • The growing stocks of young forests that are less than10 years of age have been excluded from the Korean forest resource statistics, despite the existence of standing trees; however, sustainable forest management and carbon removals in the forestry section require complete information regarding forest resources. This study developed a method to estimate the growing stocks for young forests from National Forest Inventory (NFI) data. After reviewing previous research on growth characteristics for young forests, we conducted stem analysis of major species, and examined stand characteristics by site index, based on real yield tables. Our statistical analysis results showed that there were few standing trees with diameters at breast height (DBH) above 6 cm in young stands, and that it would have taken 12 years, on average, to reach 6 cm DBH. This suggests that mean tree height by diameter should be assessed at the root, in order to assess growing stocks for young stands through the NFI. Moreover, the database system should be improved to differentiate tree species, since diverse shrubs, including trees, have been surveyed.

  • Despite the increased social demand for strengthening the punishment for ghost surgery in Korea, the governmental management is very passive compared to other offenses of medical law, and the punishment for ghost surgery is insufficient, so that medical malpractices are continuously occurring. A plastic surgeon who posted the names of clinics performing ghost surgery and the number of deaths on the internet bulletin board, was charged with the violation of the Information Telecommunication Act(defamation). Thus, this study aimed to present the legal/institutional issues and implications of defamation by the release of ghost surgery, by initially examining the charged case after posting the contents showing the death of patients by ghost surgery in clinics on the internet bulletin board. This study aimed to understand how strictly the court approached the ghost surgery in the aspect of public interest, and also to understand the judgment standard of punishment for defamation by investigating the publicly alleging facts and public interest by the disclosure of ghost surgery. Moreover, this study aims to provide the basic data necessary for guaranteeing the national health right by arousing attention to ghost surgery.

An Efficient Phantom Protection Method for Concurrency Control in Multi-dimensional Index Structures (다차원 색인구조에서 동시성제어를 위한 효율적인 유령 방지 기법)

  • In this paper, we propose a new phantom protection method for multi-dimensional index structures. The proposed method uses a hybrid approach of predicate locking and granular locking mechanisms. The proposed mechanism is independent of the types of multi-dimensional index structures, i.e., it can be applied to all types of index structures such as tree-based, file-based and hash-based index structures. Also, it achieves low development cost and high concurrency with low lock overhead. It is shown through various experiments that the proposed method outperforms existing phantom protection methods for multi-dimensional index structures.

  • Pholcus gosuensis sp. novo is described from the entrance zone of Gosu cave, Chungchengbuk-do, Korea. The species is characterized by male palpal organs with three expanded apophyses and developed callosity on procursus, two frontal apophyses of chelicerae and degrading appendix, and sclerotized arches on uterus externus. The species is related to P. crassus Paik 1978 and P. acutulus Paik, 1978 in having identical uncus and embolus but differentiated from those species by the combined characters of large apophyses and heavily sclerotized callosity on procursus, and structure of arches on uterus externus.

Removal Method of Signal Interference between Ultrasound Sensors (초음파 센서 간 신호 간섭 제거 방법)

  • This paper proposes a removal method of signal interference between ultrasound sensors where ghost signals due to interference are excluded and correct signal is recognized in distance mensurement using ultrasound sensors. The proposed method detects and excludes ghost signals when previous measured distance is compared to current measured distance and the distance difference exceeds a threshold. The threshold is fixed in conventional methods, so ghost signals cannot be correctly excluded when ultrasound sensor or target object move rapidly. On the contrary, to improve accuracy, the threshold is not fixed in the proposed method, and the threshold is adpatively determined based on the relative velocity when ultrasound sensor or target object move. Experiments of distance measurement with ultrasound signal interference are carried out where multiple ultrasound sensors of same type are exploited with maximum interference, and the results show that the proposed method efficiently exclude ghost signals.
