  • In order to reduce the download around the Smart UAV(SUAV) at Transition mode, flow control using synthetic jet has been performed. Many of the complex tilt rotor flow features are captured including the leading and trailing edge separation, and the large region of separated flow beneath the wing. Based on the results of part 1 of the present work, synthetic jet is located at 0.01c, $0.95c_{flap}$ and it is operated with the non-dimensional frequency of 0.5, 5 to control the leading edge and trailing edge separation. Consequently, download is substantially reduced compared to with no control case at transition mode using leading edge jet only. The present results show that the overall flight performance and stability of the SUAV can be remarkably improved by applying the active flow control strategy based on synthetic jet.

  • The boundary layer developing over the suction surface of a first-stage turbine blade for power generation has been investigated in this study. For three locations selected in the region where local thermal load changes dramatically, mean velocity, turbulence intensity, and one-dimensional energy spectrum are measured with a hot-wire anemometer. The results show that the suction-surface boundary layer suffers a transition from a laminar flow to a turbulent one. This transition is confirmed to be a "separated-flow transition", which usually occurs in the shear layer over a separation bubble. The local minimum thermal load on the suction surface is found at the initiation point of the transition, whereas the local maximum thermal load is observed at the location of very high near-wall turbulence intensity after the transition process. Frequency characteristics of turbulent kinetic energy before and after the transition are understood clearly from the energy spectrum data.

  • This study examined the static characteristics of a spool valve with a hybrid lap between the spool land and the sleeve. The static equation for the pressure characteristics was derived from flow equations that depend on the spool displacement, and the final model was derived from $q_a=q_b=0$ because the pressure characteristics test needs to block the control port in the valve. The static equation for the flow characteristics was derived from the pressure characteristics when the control port is open ($q_a=q_b$, $p_a=p_b$). The characteristic equation in the shifted region was assumed from the proportional relationship between the pressure-flow characteristics and the spool displacement.

  • The transition of turbulent kinetic energy(TKE) balance along the centerline of the flow unit, which is composed of straight-duct, contraction and free-jet, has been investigated by the hot-wire anemometry. It is found that the mean turbulent kinetic energy is balanced by the dissipation in the internal flow region ; by the production and the dissipation, through contraction ; and by the dissipation, in initial region(X〈8D) of free-jet. But in the developing region (8D〈X〈20D) it is balanced by all of the three(ie, diffusion, production and dissipation). Finally, in the downstream of free-jet, the mean TKE is balanced again by dissipation like as the beginning. The decay-laws along the centerline are checked in the region of free jet as well as in the straightduct. After the developing region of free-jet also exist the decay-laws, the exponent of the axial turbulence being bigger than of the radial.

  • In this study, numerical simulations were performed using the ${\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ transition model of KFLOW for the transitional flow over the KARI-11-180 airfoil. Numerical results of KFLOW were compared with experimental data and two other numerical results of XFoil and MSES. Fully turbulence model was predicted high skin friction drag than transition model because fully turbulence model could not solve the transitional flow. Numerical predictions using the ${\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ model of KFLOW show a good agreement with experimental data and other numerical results. Present numerical results were confirmed the state of drag bucket due to dramatic changing of the transition location on the airfoil surface.

  • Performance predictions of the propulsion system were conducted for a 900㎏ class Canard Rotor/Wing vehicle. The main components of the propulsion system are turbojet engine, exhaust ducts and nozzles. The internal flow of the duct was considered as one-dimensional, compressible and viscous flow. Adequate governing equations including centrifugal force effect were applied to the analysis of the duct flows. Results such as available power, available thrust, engine throttle, mass flow rates, rotor RPM and cruise nozzle area were presented for rotary-wing mode and transition mode.

  • This study investigates the natural convection of air(Pr=0.7) between two walls having a small- wave- number sinusoidal temperature distributions with a phase difference. The wave number and the phase difference of wall temperatures are k=0.5 and ㄱ/2, respectively. In the conduction-dominated regime at small Rayleigh number, two slightly inclined cells are formed over one wave length. At higher Rayleigh number, however, multicellular convection occurs in thermally unstable region. A spatial symmetry is intermittently broken in the transient period at the Rayleigh number near the critical value. The steady-state flows always satisfy the spatial symmetry. A steep increase of Nusselt number occurs near the Rayleigh number at which transition of flow pattern occurs.
