  • The Fourier series uses a vibrating wave that possesses an amplitude that is like the one of the sine curve. Therefore, the functions used in the Fourier series do not change due to the value of the frequency and that set a limit to express irregular signals with rapid oscillations or with discontinuities in localized regions. However, the wavelet series analysis(WSA) method supplements these limits of the Fourier series by a linear combination of a suitable number of wavelets. By using the wavelet that is focused on time, it is able to give changes to the range in the cycle. Also, this enables to express a signal more efficiently that has singular configuration and that is flowing. The main objective of this study is to propose a scheme called wavelet series analysis for the application of wavelet theory to one-dimensional problems represented by the second-order elliptic equation and to evaluate theperformance of proposed scheme comparing with the finite element analysis. After a through evaluation of different types of wavelets, the HAT wavelet system is chosen as a wavelet function as well as a scaling function. It can be stated that the WSA method is as efficient as the FEA method in the case of axial bars with distributed loads, but the WSA method is more accurate than the FEA method at the singular points and its computation time is less.

  • In order to utilize the processing wastes of squid, chitosans were manufactured from the pens of domestic squid, Todarbdes pacificus and foreign squid, Ommastrephes bartrami and then, its rheological properties were studied. The amounts of nitrogen and minerals of the domestic squid pens were $11.4\%\;and\;0.1\%$ respectively, whereas those of its chitosan were $7.5\%\;and\;0.2\%$. In case of foreign squid pen and chitosan, the amounts of nitrogen and minerals were $12.1\%,\;0.8\%\;and\;7.8\%,\;0.2\%$ respectively. Intrinsic viscosity $([\eta]) $ of domestic and foreign squid pen chitosans were decreased with increasing pH from 3.4 to 5.4 which might be due to the reduced repulsion in inter- of intra- chitosan molecules. Intrinsic viscosity of the domestic and foreign squid pen chitosans were decreased with increasing NaCl concentration thus indicated that the domestic and foreign squid pen chitosans were polyelectrolyte molecules and stiffness of squid pen thitosans were 0.11 similar to that of k-carrageenan. Flow type of squid pen chitosan solutions were pseudoplastic fluids without yield stress by the viscosity measurement. But the squid pen chitosan solutions showed newtonian fluid up to $0.15\~0.24\%$ concentration for domestic and $0.21\~0.24\%$ concentration for foreign at $10\~50\%$. Concentration dependence of consistency index in infinitive dilute domain (Kc) were higher in the dilute domain than entangled domain. Activation energies (Ea) of the squid pen chitosans were 3.7, 6.3, 3.6, 4.0 and 4.1 Kcal/g moi for domestic and 3.2, 3.1, 3.4, 3.8 and 3.6 Kcal/g mol for foreign at 0.1, 0.15, 0.25, 0.35 and $0.5\%$, respectively.

  • In this paper dynamic deformation of lower hinge of refrigerator is simulated using dynamic finite element analysis while refrigerator is being dropped. The flow stress curves considering velocity dependency of hinge and lower packing material are determined through bending test and compression test at several dropping speeds. The determined material properties and flow stress from reverse engineering were used as input data for refrigerator's drop test using a dynamic finite element analysis software LS-DYNA. Additionally the result between CAE and 3D deformation measurement from real refrigerator drop test are compared and the result shows that the proposed analysis model is very useful to design lower hinge and lower packing endurable to the impulsive drop impact.

  • The oceanic tides have an effect on groundwater levels in coastal fractured rock aquifers. The observed groundwater table fluctuations caused by the effective stress through an aquifer are shown as sine curves similar with tidal fluctuation. To estimate a hydrogeologic parameter, tidal method is utilized with groundwater level fluctuations of two monitoring wells. Cross correlation function is used to calculate time lags between observed groundwater levels and tide, and the deeper well shows longer time lag. The storage coefficients calculated by using tidal efficiency and time lag show large differences. The storage coefficients obtained by using time lags are close to the result of slug test, and that of the deeper well shows closer value by slug test. The tidal efficiency is unsatisfied to apply in the tidal method because of an effect of phreatic aquifer and the vertical flow of groundwater through fractured confining bed. This tidal method can be an economical and effective way to define the parameter by considering the location of observation well and hydrogeologic characteristics of a coastal aquifer.

  • The study examines the shearing and crushing characteristics of land-derived subaqueous granular materials in a gravel-bed river. A series of large-sized ring shear tests were performed to examine the effect of shear time and shear velocity on the shear stress characteristics of aquarium gravels with a 6-mm mean grain size. Three different shear velocities (i.e., 0.01, 0.1, and 1 mm/sec) were applied to measure the shear stress under the drained (long-term shearing) and undrained (short-term shearing) conditions. Different initial shear velocities, i.e., 0.01→0.1→1 mm/sec and 0.1→0.01→1 mm/sec, were considered in this study. The test results show that the grain crushing effect is significant regardless of drainage conditions. The shear stress of coarse-grained materials is influenced by initial shear velocities, regardless of the drainage conditions. In particular, particle breakage increases as grain size increases. The shearing time and initial shear velocity are the primary influencing factors determining the shear stress of gravels. The granular materials may be broken easily into particles through frictional resistance, such as abrasion, interlocking and fracture due to the particle-particle interaction, resulting in the high mobility of granular materials in a subaqueous environment.

  • A liquid storage tank is one of the most important structures in industrial complexes dealing with chemicals, and its structural damage due to an earthquake may cause a disastrous event such as the leakage of hazardous materials, fire, and explosion. It is thus essential to assess the seismic fragility of liquid storage tanks and prepare for seismic events in advance. When a liquid storage tank is oscillated by a seismic load, the hydrodynamic pressure caused by the liquid-structure interaction increases the stress and causes structural damage to the tank. Meanwhile, the seismic fragility of the structure can be estimated by considering the various sources of uncertainty and calculating the failure probabilities in a given limiting state. To accurately evaluate the seismic fragility of liquid storage tanks, a sophisticated finite element analysis is required during their reliability analysis. Therefore, in this study, FERUM-ABAQUS, a recently-developed computational platform integrated with commercial finite element and reliability analysis software packages, is introduced to perform the finite element reliability analysis and calculate the failure probability of a liquid storage tank subjected to a seismic load. FERUM-ABAUS allows for automatic data exchange between these two software packages and for the efficient seismic fragility assessment of a structure. Using this computational platform, the seismic fragility curve of a liquid storage tank is successfully obtained.
