Two-phase flow boiling experiments were conducted in 15 micro-channels with a depth of 0.2 mm, width of 0.45 mm, and length of 60 mm. FC-72 was used as the working fluid, and the mass fluxes ranged from 200 to $400kg/m^2s$. Tests were performed over a heat flux range of $5-40kW/m^2$ and vapor quality range of 0.1-0.9. The heat transfer coefficient sharply decreased at a lower heat flux and then was kept approximately constant as the heat flux is increased. Based on the measured heat transfer data, the flow pattern was simply classified into bubbly, slug, churn, and wavy/annular flows using the existing method. In addition, these classified results were compared to the transition criterion to wavy/annular regime. However, it was found that the existing transition criterion did not satisfactorily predict the transition criterion to annular regime for the present data.

A new method is proposed to identify two-phase flow regimes in horizontal gas-liquid flow, based upon a statistical analysis of instantaneous pressure drop curves at an orifice. The probability density functions of the curves indicate distinct patterns depending upon the two-phase flow regime. The transition region also could be identified by the distribution shape of the probability density function. The statistical properties of the pressure drop are analyzed for various flow regimes and transitions. Finally, the data of flow patterns determined by the proposed method are compared with the flow pattern maps suggested by other investigators.

Characteristics of flow patterns in horizontal gas-liquid two-phase flow for two different sizes of pipe were investigated based upon a statistical analysis of differential pressure fluctuations at an orifice. The probability density function and the power spectral density function of the traces indicate peculiar shapes depending upon the two-phase flow regime. Mixed and separated flows also could be identified by the autocorrelation function. The transition region from separated flow to mixed flow also could be identified by these statistical properties. The experimental data determined by this method were compared with the flow pattern maps suggested by other investigators. The result indicates that the statistical characteristics of differential pressure fluctuations at orifices may be a useful tool for identifying flow patterns of horizontal gas-liquid two-phase flow.
A study of counter-current two-phase flow in narrow rectangular channels has been performed. Two-phase flow regimes were experimentally studied in 760 mm long and 100 mm wide test sections with 2.0 and 3.0mm gaps. The resulting data have been compared to previous transition models. For the transition from bubbly to slug flow the superficial velocity of gas increased as the gap width increased. The comparison of experimental data to the transition model developed by Taitel and Barnea showed relatively good agreement for the bubbly-to-slug transition in the case of 2mm gap width. For the criteria of Mishima and Ishii to be applicable to the slug-to-churn transition the distribution parameter should be well defined for narrow channels. Even though the gap width of narrow channels increased the superficial gas velocity did not change for the transition form chum to annular flow regime. For the chum-to-annular transition the model of Taitel and Barnea showed discrepancies with experimental data, especially in the channel with larger gap.

The transition of turbulent kinetic energy(TKE) balance along the centerline of the flow unit, which is composed of straight-duct, contraction and free-jet, has been investigated by the hot-wire anemometry. It is found that the mean turbulent kinetic energy is balanced by the dissipation in the internal flow region ; by the production and the dissipation, through contraction ; and by the dissipation, in initial region(X〈8D) of free-jet. But in the developing region (8D〈X〈20D) it is balanced by all of the three(ie, diffusion, production and dissipation). Finally, in the downstream of free-jet, the mean TKE is balanced again by dissipation like as the beginning. The decay-laws along the centerline are checked in the region of free jet as well as in the straightduct. After the developing region of free-jet also exist the decay-laws, the exponent of the axial turbulence being bigger than of the radial.
In this paper, experimental data on flow pattern transition of inclination angles from 0-90 are presented. A test section is constructed 2 mm long and I.D 1inch using transparent material. The test section is supported by aluminum frame that can be placed with any arbitrary inclined angles. The air-water two-phase flow is observed at room temperature and atmospheric condition using both high speed camera and void impedance meter. The signal is sampled with sampling rate 1kHz and is analyzed under fully-developed condition. Based on experimental data, flow pattern maps are made for various inclination angles. As increasing the inclination angels from 0 to 90, the flow pattern transitions on the plane jg-jf are changed, such as stratified flow to plug flow or slug flow or plug flow to bubbly flow. The transition lines between pattern regimes are moved or sometimes disappeared due to its inclined angle.

Flow patterns and its transitions in vertical two phase flow of air-water isothermal flow are identified objectively by void output signals and moments computed from the Probability Density Function which is associated with the statistical measurement for time average local void fractions using conductance probe. It has been shown that the probe output signals, PDF distributions and its moments are deterministic criteria of flow pattern and transition classification.

An experiment has been carried out to identify flow patterns in a horizontal condensing flow with R-113. Characteristics of flow patterns were determined based upon a statistical analysis of differential pressure fluctuations at an orifice. The probability density function and power spectral density function of instantaneous pressure drop curves for various flow conditions were obtained. In comparison to the results of air-water flows, the flow patterns in a condensing flow such as annular, wavy, slug and plug could be identified. The experimental data determined by this technique were compared with the flow pattern maps suggested by other investigators. The result indicates that the statistical characteristics of differential pressure fluctuations at an orifice may be a useful tool for identifying flow patterns both in condensing flows and in adiabatic two-phase flows.

The characteristics of flow pattern transitions in a horizontal cocurrent gas-liquid flow have been investigated by means of a statistical analysis of instantaneous pressure drop curves at an orifice. The dimensionless intensity of pressure drop fluctuation shows a sudden change during the course of flow transitions, indicating that it may be a good measure to identify the flow regime transitions. The probability density function of the curves feature a unique pattern depending upon the flow regimes and the statistical properties of the PDF also have particular ranges for each flow regime. In conclusion, the statistical analysis of instantaneous pressure drops may be a powerful tool for predicting the flow regime transitions.
