Numerical Analysis of Turbulent Combustion of a Kerosene/Oxygen Coaxial Injector with a Recess (리세스가 있는 케로신/산소 동축 분사기의 난류 연소 유동 해석)

  • A multi-step quasi-global mechanism is developed for the kerosene/oxygen combustion analysis including dissociation products. Reaction constants of the global reaction are determined to have agreement with experimental data. The mechanism is used for the numerical analysis of the combustion flow field of the kerosene/oxygen shear coaxial injector. The results from high-resolution numerical analysis confirmed qualitatively that the recess enhance the fuel/air mixing and combustion efficiency by the increased flow instabilities.

Unsteady Three-Dimensional Analysis of Transverse Fuel Injection into a Supersonic Crossflow using Detached Eddy Simulation Part I : Non-Reacting Flowfield (DES를 이용한 초음속 유동내 수직 연료분사 유동의 비정상 3차원 해석 Part I : 비반응 유동장)

  • Unsteady three-dimensional flowfield generated by transverse fuel injection into a supersonic mainstream is simulated with a DES turbulence model. Comparisons are made with experimental results in terms of the temporal eddy position and eddy formation frequency. The vorticity field around the jet exit is also analyzed to understand the formation mechanism of the large eddy structures. Results indicate that the DES model correctly predicts the convection characteristics of the large scale eddies. However, it is also observed that the numerical results slightly over-predict the eddy formation frequency. The large eddy structures are generated as the counter-rotating vortices are detached alternately in the upstream recirculation region.

  • To investigate the relation between flame structure and combustion dynamic characteristics in bi-swirl coaxial injectors for a liquid rocket engine, combustion experiments were performed using gaseous methane and gaseous oxygen. CH* radicals and pressure fluctuations were simultaneously measured by changing the injector geometries such as recess length/orifice diameter and the flow conditions such as equivalence ratio/oxidizer mass flow rate. As the injector geometries affected the velocities and mixing of the propellants, the change in flame structures was observed. From a result of the frequency analysis, it was confirmed that combustion dynamic characteristics varied according to the injector geometry/flow condition and combustion instabilities could occur under specific recess length/flow conditions.

An Experimental Study on Flow Distributor Performance with Single-Train Passive Safety System of SMART-ITL (SMART-ITL 1 계열 피동안전계통을 이용한 유동분사기 성능에 대한 실험연구)

  • In order to estimate the effect of flow distributors connected to an upper nozzle of CMT(Core Makeup Tank) on the thermal-hydraulic characteristics in the tank, a simplified 2 inch Small Break Loss of Coolant Accident(SBLOCA) was simulated by skipping the decay power and Passive Residual Heat Removal System(PRHRS) actuation. The CMT is a part of safety injection systems in the SMART (System Integrated Modular Advanced Reactor). Each test was performed with reliable boundary conditions. It means that the pressure distribution is provided with repeatable and reproducible behavior during SBLOCA simulations. The maximum flow rates were achieved at around 350 seconds after the initial opening of the isolation valve installed in CMT. After a short period of decreased flow rate, it attained a steady injection flow rate after about 1,250 seconds. This unstable injection period of the CMT coolant is due to the condensation of steam injected into the upper part of CMT. The steady injection flow rate was about 8.4% higher with B-type distributor than that with A-type distributor. The gravity injection during hot condition tests were in good agreement with that during cold condition tests except for the early stages.

  • The cryogenic nitrogen spray of a swirl injector has been numerically investigated using three dimensional LES turbulence model to analyze the dynamic characteristics under supercritical condition. To predict the precise nitrogen properties under supercritical condition, SRK equation of state, Chung's method for viscosity and thermal conductivity and Takahashi's correlation based on Fuller's theory for diffusion coefficient are implemented. The complex flow structures due to interaction between flow field and acoustic field are observed inside and outside the injector under supercritical condition. FFT, POD, and DMD techniques are employed to understand the coherent structures. By implementing the FFT, the dominant frequencies are identified inside and outside the injector. The coherent flow structures related to the dominant frequencies are visualized using the POD and DMD techniques. In addition, the DMD provides the damping coefficient which is related with the instability prediction.

  • Spray characteristics of the impinging injectors in subsonic crossflows were experimentally studied and compared with the plain-orifice injectors. By changing the impingement angle (60, 90, 120) which is the same orifice length to diameter ratio (L/d = 5), spray characteristics were investigated. In the view of the top view from the impinging injectors, as the impingement angle increases, the liquid column breakup length in the y-direction was decreased. On the other hand, when the impinging injector is viewed from the side view, the breakup length in the x direction is smaller than the previous plain-orifice injectors, which mean that the atomizing performance of the impingement-type injector is better than that of the single-hole orifice.

  • To achieve efficient combustion within a manageable length, a successful fuel injection scheme must provide rapid mixing between the fuel and airstreams. The aim of the present numerical research is to investigate the mixing enhancement combustion phenomena according to fuel injector location near the cavity in supersonic flow. Fuel injector location changes the actual length to depth ratio of the cavity in the supersonic combustor. Therefore fuel injector location near the cavity effects different fuel/air mixing efficiency and combustion efficiency.

  • Experimental research on characteristics of particle-laden jet by using a coaxial injector was conducted in order to design fuel and oxidizer injectors of the supercavitation underwater vehicle. $1{\mu}m$ and $42{\mu}m$ particles was simultaneously injected to obtain particle and fluid velocity. Small particles($1{\mu}m$) and large particles represent fluid and fuel characteristics respectively. Small particles, which was processed using PIV algorithms, and one for the large particles processed using PTV algorithms. Fluid phase axial velocity increases according to particle loading ratio increases, and particles are located at the outside of the high vorticity region in a mixing layer of a coaxial injector.

  • Numerical research has been done for the transverse jet behind a rearward-facings step in turbulent supersonic flow without chemical reaction. Purpose of transverse jet is to enhance mixing of the fuel in the combustor. Two-dimensional unsteady flowfields generated by slot injection into supersonic flow are numerically simulated with the Navier-Stokes equations with two-equation k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. Numerical method is used high-order upwind TVD scheme. Eight cases are computed for different slot momentum flux ratios and slot position at downstream of the step. The flow is very similar to the cavity flow, because the jet acts as an obstacle. The numerical results thus show the periodic phenomenon.

Cumulative Distributions and Flow Structure of Two-Passage Shear Coaxial Injector with Various Gas Injection Ratio (2중 유로형 전단 동축 분사기의 기체 분사율에 따른 유동 및 입도분포)

  • To verify the effect of inner- and outer-stage gas jets, a shear coaxial injector was designed to analyze the axial velocity profile and breakup phenomenon with an increase in the measurement distance. When the measurement position was increased to Z/d=100, the axial flow showed a fully developed shape due to the momentum transfer, aerodynamic drag effect, and viscous mixing. An inner gas injection, which induces a higher momentum flux ratio near the nozzle, produces the greater shear force on atomization than an outer gas injection. Inner- and Outer-stage gas injection do not affect the mixing between the inner and outer gas flow below Z/d=5. The experiment results showed that the main effect of liquid jet breakup was governed by the gas jet of an inner stage. As the nozzle exit of the outer-stage was located far from the liquid column, shear force and turbulence breaking up of the liquid jets do not fully affect the liquid column. In the case of an inner-stage gas injection momentum flux ratio within 0.84, with the increase in the outer gas momentum flux ratio, the SMD decreases. However, at an inner-stage gas jet momentum flux ratio over 1.38, the SMD shows the similar distribution.
