• Purpose: Pipes are widely used as applied devices in many industrial fields such as machinery, electronics, electricity, and plants, and are also widely used in safety-related fields such as firefighting and chemistry. With the diversification of products, the importance of technology in the piping field is also increasing. In particular, when changing the existing copper pipe to stainless steel, it is necessary to evaluate safety and flow characteristics through structural analysis or flow analysis. Method: This study investigated the safety by flow analysis of the 6.35 inch socket model, which are integrated insert type connectors developed by a company, using CFD analysis technique. For CDF analysis, RAN model and LES model are used. Result: As results of the analysis, amplitude of the pressure fluctuation acting on the wall of the piping system is formed at a level of 3,780 Pa or less, which is a very small level of pressure compared with the operating pressure or design stress of the refrigerant piping. Conclusion: These results mean that the effect of vibration caused by turbulence on the structural safety of the pipe is negligible.

  • Three-cup anemometers are popular devices for measuring wind speeds in automated weather stations, environmental monitoring systems, and wind turbines. Cup anemometers usually suffer from lack of long-term stability owing to the wear of the bearing systems that support the rotational parts. The bearing systems are susceptible to external pollutants, vibrations, and gusts. Therefore, these anemometers have to be calibrated regularly to maintain the desired characteristics for measuring wind speed. In the present study, a new in-situ calibration system to help reduce cost and save time by calibrating the cup anemometers at the installation site is proposed. A portable in-situ calibrator was fabricated. After the characteristics of this calibrator were verified, it was used to calibrate cup anemometers. Some of the calibration results were compared with the data obtained by wind tunnel testing.

  • This paper proposes a method to estimate the flow speed of pedestrians in surveillance videos. In the proposed method, the average moving speed of pedestrians is measured by estimating the size of real-world motion from the observed motion vectors. For this purpose, a pixel-to-meter conversion factor is introduced which is calculated from camera parameters. Also, the height information, which is missing because of camera projection, is predicted statistically from simulation experiments. Compared to the previous works for flow speed estimation, our method can be applied to various camera views because it separates scene parameters explicitly. Experiments are performed on both simulation image sequences and real video. In the experiments on simulation videos, the proposed method estimated the flow speed with average error of about 0.08m/s. The proposed method also showed promising results for the real video.

  • Sonic arc airfoil derived from the TSD theory is modified to new airfoil shape and its aerodynamic performance in transonic flow is investigated. The numerical simulation using Euler equations for the modified sonic arc airfoil is performed. The numerical results are compared with the aerodynamic performance of NACA0012 airfoil, of supercritical airfoil, and of NACA64A210 airfoil. In the same free stream Mach number of transonic flow, the pressure drag of the modified sonic arc airfoil is smaller than that of NACA0012 airfoil and the lift-drag ratio of the modified sonic arc airfoil is much larger than that of NACA0012 airfoil. In the comparison of the drag-divergence Mach number of transonic flow, the drag-divergence Mach number of the modified sonic arc airfoil is larger than that of NACA64A210 airfoil but is smaller than that of supercritical airfoil.

  • Detailed flow of a shrouded tail rotor in hover is studied by using a compressible inviscid flow solver on unstructured meshes. The numerical method is based on a cell-centered finite-volume discretization and an implicit Gauss-Seidel time integration. Numerical simulation is made for a single blade attached to the center body and guide by the duct by imposing a periodic boundary condition between adjacent rotor blades. The results show that the performance of an isolated rotor without shroud compares well with experiment. In case of a shrouded rotor, correction of the collective pitch angle is made such that the overall performance matches with experiment to account for the uncertainties of the experimental model configuration. Details of the flow field compare well with the experiment confirming the validity of the present method.

  • A component-scale two-phase analysis code has been developed for a realistic simulation of two-phase flow transients in a light water nuclear reactor component. In the code, a two-fluid three-field model is adopted and the governing equations are solved on an unstructured mesh. For the numerical solution scheme, the semi-implicit method used in the RELAP5 code was selected, which has been proved to be very stable and accurate for most of practical applications. However, some modifications were needed for its application to an unstructured non-staggered grid. This paper presents the modified semi-implicit numerical method for unstructured grid and the preliminary results of the calculations.

  • In the present study, a 2-D chimera technique for overlapped bodies in relative motion is developed using unstructured triangular meshes. The solid boundary nodes located next to the intersecting point between bodies are merged to the intersecting point to assure accurate representation of the intersecting region. In order to assign proper value of flow variables at the nodes located out of the computational field, interpolation is conducted for non-active nodes. For validation, the motions of a NACA64A006 airfoil and a NACA0012 airfoil with a plane flap are computed and the results are compared with other simulations. The motion of a launching missile ejected from a NACA0012 airfoil is also simulated.

  • The concept design of joint part between propellant tank and feeding line for launch vehicle has been performed with the case study of oversea launch vehicles. we carried out, for the several configurations, numerical flow analyses to find the joint configuration which promises high flow uniformity at the outlet. There were a little difference in the numerical results, because the length of feeding lines are sufficiently long to stabilize the flow field.
