  • This study was conducted to propose residue limits of organophosphorus pesticides in functional foods produced from peels of citrus fruits. For these, not only reduction factors of pesticides in cooking and processing were estimated, but factors needed in order to produce residue limits were identified and their application method was devised. The results were as follows: (1) reduction factors appeared as 0.09-1.60 by different processings of various foods, (2) residue limits of pesticides on dietary fiber and bioflavonoid products could be computed from maximum residue limit of pesticides on the raw agricultural produce, reduction factors, and the anticipated amount of consumption of the functional foods. (3) residue limits of 18 organophosphorus pesticides were proposed in the range of 0.01-3.0mg/Kg on the dietary fiber product and 0.1-80mg/Kg on the bioflavonoid product from citrus fruit peels.

  • References on the cooking and processing losses of organophosphorus (OP) pesticides in foods were collected and analyzed to indicate that the average removal of whole pesticides being 45% in water washing, 56% in detergent washing, 91% in peeling of fruits, 5l% in blanching-boiling of vegetables, 90% in milling and processing of grains. The theoretical maximum daily intake (TMDI) calculated from the food intake and Korea maximum residue limits showed that 4 among 11 pesticides exceeded the acceptable daily intake (ADI). The estimated daily intake (EDI) calculated from the food intake and monitoring data reached 17.2% of ADI on the assumption that the toxicity of OP pesticides appears as an additive effect. The % ratio of ADI for individual pesticides was 6.1% in diazinon, 5.8% in fenthion, 3.3% in fenitrothion and very low in other pesticides. By applying reduction factors to the EDI, the removal ratio of OP pesticides in cooking and processing appears to be over 50%. In summary, the exposure level of Korean population toward whole OP pesticides was estimated to reach 23% of ADI, which would not cause any health rick as yet, but calls for a systematic risk assessment.

  • Diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.) recently became a single worst insect which is not controlled effectively by organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides in Kangwon alpine croplands. The objective of this study was to determine if diamondback moth has developed a resistance to organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides. Resistance of diamondback moth, collected at Keichon, Jangpyong Taebaek, Chunchon, and Hongchon, was determined by the concentration required to kill fifty percent of population, $LC_{50}$. Their response of resistance varied to insecticides and locations: Taebaek populations were 35 and 70 times more resistant to chlorpyrifos and fenitrothion, respectively, than susceptible(S) population. Hongchon populations were 94 and 254 times more resistant to chlorpyrifos and fenitrothion, respectively, than S population. In addition, Chunchon populations were 37 and 19 times more resistant to profenofos and benfuracarb, respectively, than S population. However, the field populations did not differ in resistance to diazinon, phenthoate, flupyrazofos, carbofuran, and furathiocarb. This study show that field populations of diamondback moth found in Kangwon alpine vegetable croplands have developed a resistance and/or multiple resistance to some insecticides, implying that farmers are losing organophosphorus and carbamate insecticide options for selective control in vegetable crops.

  • In this study, we monitored the residues of organophosphate pesticides (OP) in eight fruit vegetables grown in Korea, and assessed risk levels of acute and chronic exposure of OP through the consumption of fruit vegetables. Chlorpyrifos, EPN, methidathion and phosphamidon in eight fruit vegetables were detected in this study. The results of cumulative assessment of national estimated short term intake for acute exposure of OP were due to the following order; eggplant, tomato, squash and cucumber. Total theoretical maximum daily intake calculated at first step of chronic exposure assessment for registered OP in Korea was 76.14%, compared with acceptable daily intake ADI) based on chlorpyrifos. In addition, total national estimated maximum daily intake calculated at second step of chronic exposure assessment was 13.949%, compared with ADI. Third chronic assessment was conducted by probabilistic approach using OP residues detected in eight fruit vegetables and showed that total exposure risk was very low, corresponding to 0.0001% compared to ADI. Based on those finding, the risk of organophosphate pesticides in fruit vegetables was considered quantitatively negligible. In future, further investigation to expand the target should be followed to do more accurate and detailed risk assessment.

  • Organo-chlorinated pesticides have been seldom measured in Korea because their use was banned for more than two decades. Nevertheless, the environmental persistency of these pesticides requires regular monitoring. Only organo-phosphorus pesticides are currently being monitored in Korea. Simultaneous determination of organo-chlorinated and organo-phosphorus pesticides was attempted using gas chromatography/mass spectrometer detector. Pressurized fluid extraction(PFE) was used in sample preparation. PFE showed equivalent extraction efficiency to traditional soxhlet extraction with less solvent use and less sample preparation time. Average recovery of spiked pesticides to soil and lawn samples was 62% ranging 52 to 154%. Method detection levels(MDLs) for these pesticides ranged from 3.4 to 10.5 ${\mu}g/kg$. Endosulfan, fenitrothion, and diazinon were found in the samples from 5 different golf courses out of 9 courses.
