  • Water is the most precious resource to human being, but it is polluted by different organic compounds. Organic matter (OM) in aqeous solutions is one of the important parameters of concern for human and environmental impact, and thus, it is essential to better characterize specifically targeted organic matter in aggregated and individual level of concentrations. This review presents different analytical tools and protocols to investigate detailed properties and characterization. Physical, chemical and biological aspects of OM are envisaged in terms of traditional and advanced measurement methods.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of floral inhibition of An-gelica gigas NAKAI in the hilly altitude located in the Northern Gyeongbuk Province from Feb. 1992 to Nov. 1994. The results obtained were as follows : As the cultivated areas are high, rate of bolting was significantly decreased, having high yield, good growth, and medicinal quality. It is considered that the optimal cultivating area was at least above 600m altitude. In the hilly altitude, the more shorten nursery period was, the more decreased rate of bolting was, it results in decreased yield, having no significant differences in contents such as extracts and decursin. In bolting response from temperature treatment of the seedlings, treatment of high temperature was significantly decreased floral induction, but rate of establishment was decreased by decayed root. Bolting rate at different organic resources has more reduced in single fertilization than that of in organic application, but among organic resources, compost of rice straw has the lowest bolting rate. As a result, yield and medicinal qualities at various organic resources were increased in application of organic resources which was no con-siderable tendency among organic resources.

  • As industrial activities are growing, pollutants found in the contaminated land are getting diverse. Some contaminated areas are subject to mixed wastes containing both organic and inorganic wastes such as hydrocarbon and heavy metals. This study concerns with the influence of the degradation of organic pollutants on the coexisting heavy metals, expecially for As. As mainly exists as two different oxidation state; As(III) and As(V) and the conversion between the two chemical forms may be induced by organic degradation in the soil contaminated by mixed wastes. We operated microcosm in an anaerobic chamber for 60 days, using sandy loam. The soils in the microcosm are artificially contaminated both by tetradecane and As, with different combination of As(III) and As(V); As(III):As(V) 1:1, As(III) only and As(V) only. Although not systematic, ratio of As(III)/As(Total) increase slightly at the later stage of experiment. Considering complicated geochemical reactions involving oxidation/reduction of organic materials, Mn/Fe oxides and As, the findings in the study seem to indicate the degradation of the organics is connected with the As speciation. That is to say, the As(V) can be reduced to As(III) either by direct or indirect influence induced by the organic degradation. Although Fe and Mn are good oxidising agent for the oxidation of As(III) to As(V), organic degradation may have suppressed reductive dissolution of the Fe and Mn oxides, causing the organic pollutants to retard the oxidation of As(III) to As(V) until the organic degradation ceases. The possible influence of organic degradation on the As speciation implies that the As in mixed wastes may be have elevated toxicity and mobility by partial conversion from As(V) to As(III).

  • It is generally accepted that organic materials are a significant factor on the soil aggregation formation but little information exists on how the formation and stabilization of aggregates in reclaimed tidelands. In this work, the effects of organic materials on the soil aggregate formation in reclaimed tidelands were determined. The soil was treated with 5 cm-size chopped fresh italian ryegrass residues (fresh organic material), commercial livestock compost with swine manure and sawdust (by product fertilizer), and fresh organic material + by product fertilizer (1 : 1 w/w) after ploughing at 20 cm soil depth. The three organic materials applied $2,000kg\;10a^{-1}$ every year. Water stable aggregate was estimated by wet-sieving method. Three years after the beginning of the experiment, water stable aggregate rate and MWD (mean weight diameter) were higher fresh organic material treatment than two other treatments. For improvement of physical property and structure of soil in reclaimed tidelands, fresh organic material treatment was more suitable than two other treatments.

  • A survey of 31 organic farmers were conducted to investigate the actual conditions of organic matter application. The amounts of organic matter application in the fields were higher in order of fruit, vegetable and rice farm. The average was 50 ton/ha in vegetable farms. In the green vegetable farms saw dust and animal manure were mainly utilized to make compost. Rice straw, wood chip, and forest bushes were also used for composting. In the fruit vegetable farms materials relatively lower in nitrogen content such as rice straw and cattle manure were used in vegetative period and materials higher in nitrogen content such as oil cake and wild grass were used in reproductive phase. Nutrient balance investigated in the farm in Icheon region who produce lettuce, angelica, and kale continuously in one cropping year indicated surplus in three major nutrients. Nitrogen and phosphorous were in excess by 29 and 10 kg respectively in the organic rice farm in yang-pyoung region. While soil chemical properties in the organic farms are within the adequate range in open field, it is much higher than the limits in the greenhouse soils. Overall application of organic matter is in an oversupply state. This results suggested that the organic matter management should be based on the soil conditions for sustainable cultivation. Chemical composition of organic matters and soil test reports should be considered prior to the application of organic matter.

  • Stable isotope and biomarker analyses were carried out for the organic sediments from the exploratory wells in the Jeju Basin in order to understand the characteristics of organic matter. Organic matter in Geobuk-1, Okdom-1, JDZ VII-1 and VII-2 well is predominantly originated from land plants rather than marine algae according to carbon $({\delta}^{13}C_{org})$ and nitrogen $({\delta}^{15}N_{org})$ isotopic compositions. In the Geobuk-1, geochemical characteristics such as carbon $({\delta}^{13}C_{org})$, nitrogen ($({\delta}^{15}N_{org})$ and TOC contents are obviously changed by the depth 2,400 m, which is likely due to the change of origin of organic matter, sedimentary process or sedimentary environments. Analysis of the saturated fraction of the bitumen suggests the contribution of migrated oil to the indigenous bitumen from the samples 2,509, 2,833 and 3,163 m of the JDZ YII-1 and 3,253 m of the Geobuk-1 well. However, this characteristics can be derived from the contribution of the original organic matter. Based on the biomarker analysis, the samples from the Okdom-1 and Geobuk-1 appear to represent sedimentary organic matter of similar composition, that is rotatively immature, and which was probably deposited in the fluvio-deltaic setting with minor offshore marine influence. The samples from JDZ VII-1 appear to have been deposited in a more terrestrially dominated setting.
