  • Recently, many research works are focusing on DVC (Distributed Video Coding) system for low complexity encoder. However the feedback channel-based parity bit control is a major cause of the high decoding time latency. Spatial and temporal correlation is high in video and, therefore, the statistical property can be applied for the parity bit request of LDPCA frame. By introducing frame adaptive parity bit request estimation method, this paper proposes a new method for reducing the decoding time latency. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed method achieves about 80% of complexity reduction, compared to the conventional no-estimation method.

  • This study aimed to investigate the voice onset time (VOT) of plosives in the VCV syllables by the place of articulation and phonation type spoken by children with bilateral cochlear implants (CIs) in comparison with children with typical hearing (TH). In all, 15 children with bilateral CIs and 15 children with TH participated in this study, aged between 5 to 10 years. All children produced 9 VCV syllables and their VOT were analyzed by the Praat software. There was no significant difference in mean VOT between children with bilateral CIs and children with TH. However, there was a significant difference in mean VOT by the place of articulation, such that the VOT for velars were longer than those for bilabials and alveolars. Additionally, there was a significant difference in mean VOT by the phonation type, such that the VOT of aspirated consonants were longer than those of lenis and fortis consonants. The results of this study suggest that children with bilateral CIs can distinguish the acoustic properties of plosive consonants and control the speech timing between the structures of the larynx and the oral cavity at a similar level as children with TH.

  • This study aimed to explore how effective explicit form-focused instruction (FFI) is in teaching the schwa vowel /ə/ to EFL students in a classroom setting. The participants were 25 female high school students, who were divided into the experimental group (n=13) and the control group (n=12). One female American also participated in the study for a speech sample as a reference. The treatment, which involves shadowing model pronunciation by the researcher and a free text-to-speech software and the researcher's feedback in a private session, was given to the control group over a month and a half. The speech samples, for which the participants read the 14 polysyllabic stimulus words followed by the sentences containing the words, were collected before and after the treatment. The paired-samples t test and non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used for analysis. The results showed that the participants of the experimental group in the post-test reduced the duration of the schwa by around 40 percent compared to the pre-test. However, little effect was found in approximating the participants' distribution patterns of /ə/ measured by the F1/F2 formant frequencies to the reference point, which was 539 Hz (F1) by 1797 Hz (F2). The findings of this study suggest that explicit FFI with multiple repetitions and corrective feedback is partly effective in teaching pronunciation.

  • Most of the commercialized wearable text input devices are wrist-worn keyboards that have adopted the minimization method of reducing keys. Generally, a drastic key reduction in order to achieve sufficient wearability increases KSPC(Keystrokes per Character), decreases text entry performance, and requires additional effort to learn a new typing method. We are faced with wearability-usability tradeoff problems in designing a good wearable keyboard. To address this problem, we introduced a new keyboard minimization method of reducing key pitch. From a series of empirical studies, we found the potential of a new method which has a keyboard with a 7mm key pitch, good wearability and social acceptance in terms of physical form factors, and allows users to type 15.0WPM in 3 session trials. However, participants point out that a lack of passive haptic feedback in keying action and visual feedback on users' input deteriorate the text entry performance. We have developed the One-key Keyboard that addresses this problem. The traditional desktop keyboard has one key per character, but the One-key Keyboard has only one key ($70mm{\times}35mm$) on which a 10*5 QWERTY key array is printed. The One-key Keyboard detects the position of the fingertip at the time of the keying event and figures out the character entered. We conducted a text entry performance test comprised of 5 sessions. The participants typed 18.9WPM with a 6.7% error rate over all sessions and achieved up to 24.5WPM. From the experiment's results, the One-key Keyboard was evaluated as a potential text input device for wearable computing, balancing wearability, social acceptance, input speed, and learnability.

  • The paper presents a new dynamic displacement measurement system. The developed displacement measurement system consists of a sensor module, a base module and a computation module. The sensor module, which contains a force-balanced accelerometer and low-price RTK-GNSS, measures the high-precision acceleration with sampling frequency of 100Hz, the low-precision displacement and velocity with sampling frequency of 10Hz. The measured data is transferred to the computation module through LAN cable, and precise displacement is estimated in real-time with 100Hz sampling frequency through a two stage Kalman filter. The field test was conducted at San Francisco-Oaklmand Bay bridge, CA, USA to verify the precision of the developed system, and it showed the RMSE was 1.68mm.

  • A control of the body posture and movement is maintained by the vestibular system, vision, and proprioceptors. Afferent signals from those receptors are transmitted to the vestibular nuclear complex, and the efferent signals from the vestibular nuclear complex control the eye movement and skeletal muscle contract. The postural disturbance caused by loss of the vestibular function results in nausea, vomiting, vertigo and loss of craving for life. The purpose of this study is to develop a off-vertical rotatory system for evaluating the function of semicircular canals and otolith organs, selectively, and visual stimulation system for- stimulation with horizontal, vortical and 3D patterns. The Off-vortical axis rotator is composed of a comportable chair, a DC servo-motor with reducer and a tilting table controlled by PMSM. And a double feedback loop system containing a velocity feedback loop and a position feedback loop is applied to the servo controlled rotatory chair system. Horizontal, vertical, and 3D patterns of the visual stimulation for applying head mounted display are developed. And wireless portable systems for optokinetic stimulation and recording system of the eye movement is also constructed. The gain, phase, and symmetry is obtained from analysis of the eye movement induced by vestibular and visual stimulation. Detailed data were described.

  • We implement an interactive 3D audio broadcasting terminal which synthesizes an audio scene according to the request of a user. Audio scene structure is described by the MPEG-4 AudioBIFS specifications. The user updates scene attributes and the terminal synthesizes the corresponding sound images in the 3D space. The terminal supports the MPEG-4 Audio top nodes and some visual nodes. Instead of using sensor nodes and route elements, we predefine node type-specific user interfaces to support BIFS commands for field replacement. We employ sound spatialization, directivity/shape modeling, and reverberation effects for 3D audio rendering and realistic feedback to user inputs. We also introduce a virtual concert program as an application scenario of the interactive broadcasting terminal.
