  • In this paper, we propose a Multi-Strata Space Time Code(MSSTC) for MIMO retransmissions. Since MSSTC is constructed by superimposing two OSTBC matrices, there are no intra-stratum interferences, but there exist inter-strata interferences. In MIMO retransmission environment, the transmitter switches adaptively the phases of strata at each transmission by using 1-bit feedback sent from the receiver in order to reduce the inter-strata interferences efficiently. We also propose a power allocation scheme between strata to improve error performance. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves better performance than other conventional schemes.

  • MAI (multiple aperture SAR interferometry) method has been recently developed to improve the measurement accuracy of along-track surface deformation. By means of split-beam SAR processing, this novel technique produces forward- and backward-looking interferograms, which are combined to generate an MAI interferogram. The along-track surface deformation can then be derived from the MAI interferogram. The achieved accuracy of the along-track surface deformation is approximately 8 cm for interferograms with a coherence of 0.6. It is commonly recognized that the topographic phase on an MAI interferogram can be ignored. However, in this paper, we have generated an MAI interferogram from an ALOS P ALSAR interferometric pair spanning the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and shown that the topographic phase distortion on the MAI interferogram can reach to about $3.45{\times}10^{-4}$ rad./m. This distortion corresponds to an along-track surface deformation of about 98 cm. We have proposed an efficient method to remove the topographic phase distortion. After correcting the distortion, the topographic phase distortion on the MAI interferogram is reduced to about $7.82{\times}10^{-6}$ rad./m. This means that the proposed method can effectively remove the topographic distortion on the MAI interferogram to improve along-track surface deformation measurement.

  • In this paper, we propose the new optical security technique using two phase holograms based on interferometer. The encoded random phase image does not have any information on the original image. Without Hewing the key mask, one cannot decode the encrypted image and regenerate the original image. And the use of two phase only images in the proposed security system leads to maximum optical efficiency (100% in theory). Also they cannot be detected by an intensity detector such as a CCD camera. Computer simulations and optical experiments show performance of the proposed methods.

  • Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of intertidal flat can be widely used not only for scientific fields, coastal management, fisheries, ocean safety, military, but also for understanding natural and artificial topographic changes of the tidal flat. In this study, we generated DEM of the Ganghwado southern intertidal flat, the largest tidal flat in the west coast of the Korean Peninsula, using waterline method and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). Constructed DEM which applied waterline method to the Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-7 ETM+ images closely expresses overall topographic relief of tidal flat. We found that the accuracy was determined by the number of waterlines which reflect various tidal conditions. The application of InSAR to the ERS-1/2 and ENVISAT images showed that only ERS-1/2 tandem pairs successfully generated DEM in the part of northern Yeongjongdo, but construction of DEM in the other areas was difficult due to the low coherence caused by a lot of surface remnant waters. In the near future, Kompsat-2 will provide satellite images having multi-spectral and high spatial resolution within a relatively short period at different sea levels. Application of waterline method to these images will help us construct a high precision tidal flat DEM. Also, we should develop DEM generation method using single-pass microwave satellite images.

  • Phase unwrapping is an essential procedure for interferometric synthetic aperture radar techniques. Accordingly, a lot of phase unwrapping methods have been developed. Deep-learning-based unwrapping methods have recently been proposed. In this paper, we reviewed state-of-the-art deep-learning-based unwrapping approaches in terms of 1) the approaches to predicting unwrapped phases, 2) deep learning model structures for phase unwrapping, and 3) training data generation. The research trend of the approaches to predicting unwrapped phases was introduced by categorizing wrap count segmentation, phase jump classification, phase regression, and deep-learning-assisted method. We introduced the case studies of deep learning model structure for phase unwrapping, and model structure optimization to relate the overall phase information. In addition, we summarized the research trend of the training data generation approaches in the views of phase gradient and noise in the main. And the future direction in deep-learning-based phase unwrapping was presented. It is expected that this paper is used as guideline for exploring future direction of deep-learning-based phase unwrapping research in Korea.

  • We propose an optical encryption/decryption technique for a security system based on 2-step phase-shifting digital holography. Phase-shilling digital holography is used for recording phase and amplitude information on a CCD device. 2-step phase-shifting is implemented by moving the PZT mirror with phase step of 0 or ${\pi}/2$. The binary data and the key are expressed with random code and random phase patterns. The digital hologram is a Fourier transform hologram and is recorded on CCD with 256 gray level quantization. We remove the DC term of the digital hologram fur data reconstruction, which is essential to reconstruct the original binary input data/image. The error evaluation fer the decrypted binary data is analyzed. One of errors is a quantization error in detecting the hologram intensity on CCD, and the other is generated from decrypting the data with the incorrect key. The technique using 2-step phase-shifting holography is more efficient than a 4-step method because 2-step phase-shifting holography system uses less data than the 4-step method for data storage or transmission. The simulation shows that the proposed technique gives good results fur the optical encryption of binary information.

  • Nowadays, SAR Interferometry is actively being studied as a new technique in topographic mapping using satellite imagery. It extracts height values using phase information derived by two SAR imageries covering same areas. Unlike when using SPOT imagery, it is not affected by atmospheric conditions and time. So to speak, we can say that SAR Interferometry is flexible in imagery acquisitions and can get height data economically over wide area. So, it is expected that SAR Interferometry will be widely using in GIS applications. But, in some area occurring geometric distortion, height data are misjudged or not extracted depending on phase unwrapping algorithms. IN the case of ERS tandem data, the accuracy of height data was worst in mountain area. It is the because of the short incidence angle resulted in layover effect. Of the phase unwrapping algorithms, path-following was better in height accuracy but could not get data in layover area. In this area, we could get height data using Height Sensitivity. In concludion, we could get DEM that maintained the accuracy of path-following method and have overall data across imagery.

  • This paper presents a differential interferometry technique for soil moisture change detection by measuring surface-height variation. COSMO-SkyMed SAR images were used to verify the DInSAR(differential interferometric SAR) technique. The soil penetration depth changes according to soil moisture, that causes phase change of the received signal. The height of soil surface and its displacement can be detected by a radar interferometry technique using phase difference of two received signals. To retrieve displacement variation, one of three SAR images is used as a reference image. Reference image and other two images are processed by the differential interferometry technique in the same area. The soil moisture was measured for the test sites to verify the DInSAR technique. The penetration depth is calculated by using the in-situ measured soil moisture data and it is compared with the displacement values acquired by the DInSAR technique.

  • Recently high spatial resolution space-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems have launched and have been operated successfully. Interferometric SAR (InSAR) processing with the space-based high resolution observations acquired by these systems can provide more detail information for various geodetic applications. Coherence is regarded as a critical parameter in the evaluating the quality of an InSAR pair. In this study, we evaluate the coherence characteristics of high-resolution data acquired by TerraSAR-X (X-band) and ALOS PALSAR (L-band) and intermediate-resolution data acquired by Envisat ASAR (C-band) over western Texas, U.S.A. Our coherence analysis reveals that the high-resolution X-band TSX (3.1 cm) data has a high coherence level (0.3-0.6), similar to that of the L-band ALOS PALSAR data (23.5 cm) in short temporal baselines. Further more, the TSX coherence values are significantly higher than those of the C-band (5.6 cm) Envisat ASAR data. The higher coherence of the TSX dataset is a surprising result, because common scattering theories suggest that the longer wavelength SAR data maintain better coherence. In vegetated areas the shorter wavelength radar pulse interacts mostly with upper sections of the vegetation and, hence, does not provide good correlation over time in InSAR pairs. Thus, we suggest that the higher coherence values of the TSX data reflect the data's high-resolution, in which stable and coherent scatters are better maintained. Although, however, the TSX data show a very good coherence with short temporal baseline (11-33 days), the coherences are significantly degraded as the temporal baselines are increased. This result confirms previous studies showing that the coherence has a strong dependency on the temporal baseline.
