  • On the field of speech processing the treatment of noise is still important problems for speech research. Especially, it has been noticed that the background noise causes remarkable reduction of speech recognition ratio. As the examples of the background noise, there are such various non-stationary noises existing in the real environment as driving noise of automobiles on the road or typing noise of printer. The treatment for these kinds of noises is not so simple as could be eliminated by the former Wiener filter, but needs more skillful techniques. In this paper as one of these trials, we show an algorithm which is a speech enhancement method using a model of mutual inhibition for noise reduction in speech which is contaminated by white noise or background noise mentioned above. It is confirmed that the proposed algorithm is effective for the speech degraded not only by white noise but also by colored noise, judging from the spectral distortion measurement.

  • Seismic waveform estimation is based on the assumption that the seismic trace tying a well is one dimensional convolution of the propagating seismic waveform and the reflectivity series derived from well logs (sonic and density). With this assumption, the waveform embedded in a seismic trace can be estimated using a Wiener match filter. In this paper, I experimented a preprocessing procedure that applies both on the seismic trace and on the reflectivity series. The procedure is based on the assumption that the travel time can be estimated better from the seismic trace and that the instantaneous reflectivity values can be measured better on the well log. Thus the procedure is, 1) start-time adjustment and dynamic differential stretches are applied on the sonic log, and 2) seismic amplitudes are balanced such that the low frequency part of the seismic are matched to that of the reflectivities derived from well logs.

  • In this paper, a land and maritime unified tourism information guide system is proposed which employs robust speech recognition in ship noise environments. Most of conventional front-ends for speech recognition have used a Wiener filter to compensate for stationary noise such as car or babble noises. However, such the conventional front-ends have limitation in reducing non-stationary noise that are occurred inside the ship on voyage. To overcome such a limitation, the proposed system incorporates nonlinear multi-band spectral subtraction to provide highly accurate tourism route recognition. It is shown from the experiment that compared to a conventional system the proposed system achieves relative improvement of a tourism route recognition rate by 5.54% under a noise condition of 10 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

  • In this paper, a determinant-based two-channel noise reduction method which utilizes speech presence probability (SPP) is proposed. The proposed method improves noise reduction performance from the conventional determinant-based two-channel noise reduction method in [7] by applying SPP to the Wiener filter gain. Consequently, the proposed method adaptively controls the amount of noise reduction depending on the SPP. For performance evaluation, the segmental signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the perceptual evaluation of speech quality, the short time objective intelligibility, and the log spectral distance were measured in the simulated noisy environments considered various types of noise, reverberation, SNR, and the direction and number of noise sources. The experimental results presented that determinant-based methods outperform phase difference-based methods in most cases. In particular, the proposed method achieved the best noise reduction performance maintaining minimum speech distortion.

  • Due to the popularization of high-performance capturing equipments and the emergence of powerful image-editing softwares, it is easy to make high-quality counterfeit money. However, the probability of detecting counterfeit money to the general public is extremely low and the detection device is expensive. In this paper, a counterfeit money detection algorithm using a general purpose scanner and computer system is proposed. First, the printing features of color printers are calculated using morphological operations and gray-level co-occurrence matrix. Then, these features are used to train a support vector machine classifier. This trained classifier is applied for identifying either original or counterfeit money. In the experiment, we measured the detection rate between the original and counterfeit money. Also, the printing source was identified. The proposed algorithm was compared with the algorithm using wiener filter to identify color printing source. The accuracy for identifying counterfeit money was 91.92%. The accuracy for identifying the printing source was over 94.5%. The results support that the proposed algorithm performs better than previous researches.

  • Due to the popularization of digital high-performance capturing equipments and the emergence of powerful image-editing softwares, it is easy for anyone to make a high-quality counterfeit money. However, the probability of detecting a counterfeit money to the general public is extremely low. In this paper, we propose a counterfeit money detection algorithm using a general purpose scanner. This algorithm determines counterfeit money based on the different features in the printing process. After the non-local mean value is used to analyze the noises from each money, we extract statistical features from these noises by calculating a gray level co-occurrence matrix. Then, these features are applied to train and test the support vector machine classifier for identifying either original or counterfeit money. In the experiment, we use total 324 images of original money and counterfeit money. Also, we compare with noise features from previous researches using wiener filter and discrete wavelet transform. The accuracy of the algorithm for identifying counterfeit money was over 94%. Also, the accuracy for identifying the printing source was over 93%. The presented algorithm performs better than previous researches.
