  • Climate, weather, insolation (solar radiation), and solar energy in major cities of Tajikistan were investigated prior to construction of infrastructure for the Dushanbe Solar Station. In Dushanbe city there was a 70% probability of sunny days from May 16 to October 23, a period of 5.2 months. August had the most sunny days of in the year, with 99% probability of a sunny, the cloudiest month was February with a 41% chance of being sunny. In major cities of the Sughd and Gorno-Badakhshan states, the average number of cloudy days per month was ~3.3, with Dzhauz having 53 day and Fedchnko Glacier 79 days. For the 18 major cities of Tajikistan, the average annual total solar radiation was 2,429 W/m2, and the average monthly solar radiation was 202 W/m2. The city with the lowest annual total and monthly average solar radiation was Shartuz in Sughd state, with values ~2.7% less than the national average. The cities with the highest annual total and monthly average solar radiation were Khorog and Jirgatol in Gorno-Badakhshan state, with values ~10% above the national average. The daily average incident shortwave solar energy in the cities Dushanbe, Karakul, and Jirgatol was ~7.8 kWh per 2.4 m2 during summer (May-August), and 2.7 kWh during winter (November-February), or ~35% that of summer.

  • The Storage efficiency of concentric evacuated tube solar collector is tested for one year from January 1st to December 31st under the real sun condition. The testing equipment is operated continuously for three days without cooling the storage tank. Daily storage efficiency is obtained from dividing stored energy in the storage tank by solar insolation on the solar collector for each day. Daily averaged temperature of the storage tank is lowest in January and highest in August. Monthly averaged storage efficiency is also lowest in November and highest in June. Therefore, it can be said that the storage temperature and the storage efficiency are roughly proportional to outdoor temperature. Furthermore, the daily storage efficiency is reversely proportional to $(T_s-T_a)/I_c$ where $T_s$ and $T_a$ are daily averaged storage temperature and outdoor temperature from sunrise to sunset, and $I_c$ is total insolation on the solar collector for a day.

  • On September 23, 2020, at 1:39 a.m., a bright fireball above Seocheon was observed across the country. Two fireball explosions were identified in the images of the All-Sky Camera (ASC), and the shock waves were recorded at seismic and infrasound stations in the southwestern Korean Peninsula. The location of the explosion was estimated by a Bayesian-based location method using the arrival times of the fireball-associated seismic and infrasound signals at 17 stations. Realistic azimuth- and rang-dependent propagation speeds of sound waves were incorporated into the location method to increase the reliability of the results. The location of the sound source was found to be 36.050°N, 126.855°E at an altitude of 35 km, which was close to the location of the second fireball explosion. The two explosions were identified as sequential infrasound arrivals at local infrasound stations. Simulations of waveforms for long ranges explain the detection results at distant infrasound stations, up to ~266 km from the sound source. The dominant period of the signals recorded at five infrasound stations is about 0.4 s. A period-energy relation suggests the explosion energy was equivalent to ~0.3 ton of TNT.

  • Primary productivity of phytoplankton was measured by $^{14}C$ method from January to October of 1996 in Seonakdong River. This river was a highly productive freshwater showing the euphotic depth of 1.4 m in August and 2.1 m in the remaining season. Chlorophyll-a concentrations of phytoplankton ranged from 67 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ to 894 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ and showed the great increase in August. Maximum specific productivity was 2.1 ${\sim}$4.3 mg C mg $chl-a{-1}\;hr^{-1}$ and occurred above 0.4m depth. In photosynthesis-irradiance relation, photoinhibition or photosynthetic suppression of phytoplankton occurred clearly in the cold seasons, while phytoplankton (mainly Microcystis aeruginosa and its relatives) in August did not show any symptom of the photosynthetic inhibition against the high irradiance. The specific productivity of phytoplankton was eventually dependant upon incident irradiance to show the linear correlation with received irradiance infield, and the areal productivity of phytoplankton upon chlorophyll-a standing crops. In the downstream of the Nakdong River, phytoplankton productions have linearly increased since the estuarine barrage construction to reflect the gradual eutrophication in the estuarine area. Average chlorophyll-a increase of 10 ${\mu}g\;chl-a\;L{-1}$ absolutely corresponded to the primary production acceleration of 30 mg C $m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$ on the annual basis.
