In order to obtain scientific information for the conservation of Utricularia japonica Makino, rare plant species, we investigated life history, phenology, growth and distribution in the east coastal region of Korea. Seven habitats of U. japonica were confirmed in this study. Turion of U. japonica rests overwinter at the bottom and ripens at the water surface and then usually germinate and sprout when the water warms in spring. A single shoot grown from turion divided into several shoots. Shoot decomposition started in October and formed a new turion at the end of the decomposed shoot. Flowering period was from early July to late October. Percentage of flowering ramets was significantly low as 6.3%. U. japonica showed the fastest growth rate from April to July, the maximum growth in August and the highest biomass in October. U. japonica tended to be concentrated in larger ramets in the water depth of 50 cm~150 cm in Cheonjin lake. The main factors affecting the growth of U. japonica were water temperature and turbidity. The establishment and growth of U. japonica in Cheonjin lake were determined by responses to water temperature with seasonal change and to light conditions caused by the different plants. These conditions affect the temporal and spatial distribution of U. japonica and population change. The findings of this study would be helpful to provide the basic information needed for the conservation and restoration of U. japonica.
To establish a cultivation system of Sedum sarmentosum using a rice nursery tray ($30{\times}60{\times}3\;cm$) in non-heating plastic film house, cuttings of two local strains (Wanju and Keumsan) were prepared and planted at different planting densities (40, 60 and 80 cuttings per tray) on September 7th, and subsequent growth and yield at pre- and post-winter season were investigated. When pre-wintering growth were measured at 60 days after planting, high planting density (80 cuttings/tray) decreased leaf length and lateral shoot number per plant compared to 40 cuttings/tray. When post-wintering growth were measured on April 20th, no significant growth differences as affected by planting density were observed in Keumsan strain, while decreased stem diameter, node number and leaf number were observed in Wanju strain planted at 80 cuttings/tray compared to 40 cuttings/tray. Fresh and dry weights were not significantly different as affected by planting density, but those were significantly increased in Wanju strain compared to Keumsan strain. When regrowth characteristics followed by the first harvest were measured on June 5th, significantly increased stem number was observed at 80 cuttings/tray compared to 40 cuttings/ tray. Fresh and dry weight were significantly increased in Keumsan strain planted at 80 cuttings/tray compared to 40 cuttings/tray, and dry weight were increased in Wanju strain compared to Keumsan strain. Wanju strain showed higher shoot yield, thicker stem, shorter node and larger leaf, and non-succulent stem under high planting density compared to Keumsan strain. Accordingly, the optimum density was 40 cuttings per tray, and Wanju strain was adequate for the cultivation system using a rice nursery tray.
The telemetry of eight adult manchurian trouts (Brachymystax lenok tsinlingensis) in the upper part of the Nakdong River, which is the southern limit of distribution of manchurian trout on the Korean peninsula, was used to examine migration patterns and evaluate characteristics of over-wintering and the spawning season between December, 2007 and May, 2008. Based on the tracking data, the tagged fish showed a limited migration between adjacent pools, moving only up to $8.6m\;day^{-1}$ during the winter season (December to February). Hydraulic conditions of over-wintering pool areas were, ca. 1m depth, slow moving surface water with areas of sand and gravel. The migration of tagged individuals was successful, moving up to $96.2m\;day^{-1}$ during the spawning season. Two tagged individuals (BL4, BL6) exhibited upstream migration, whereas others showed downstream movements. The timing of upstream migration of the two individuals was consistent with an increasing phases of water level and discharge. The fishes migrating toward the down stream moved to the wide pool areas downstream, where they spent the summer season for the growth.

This study was conducted to investigate the status of carcasses of wild birds among natural monuments in Korea. In Korea, from 2016 to 2020, a total of 38 species and 5,036 individual carcasses of natural monuments were found. The year 2020 saw the highest numbers of species death with 34 and in 2019 the highest number was recorded with 1,095 individuals. In autumn, the largest number of species and the smallest number of individuals were confirmed dead. On the contrary, the smallest number of species and the highest number of individuals were confirmed dead in summer. The largest number of species died in November, and the largest number of individuals died in June. Kestrels accounted for about 20% of the total carcasses, making up the largest number, followed by eagle owls, brown hawk-owls, scops owls, goshawk, eagles and sparrow hawks. In spring and summer, domestic breeding species accounted for most of the carcasses and in winter, the proportion of overwintering individuals such as wooper swans and eagles increased. Reports of lost natural monuments are done by human and the status of the carcasses alone cannot inform the population characteristics of natural monuments when they stay in Korea. However, it is expected that the identified domestic population of strigiformes which has not been investigated in detail because they are nocturnal, and data on the status of carcasses of natural monuments in Korea will provide basic data for the protection of natural monuments.

For research of the wintering waterbirds we surveyed monthly from October 2000 to March 2001 on Gangjin Bay, Chollanam-do, Korea. During the study period, the waterbirds were observed 9,825 individuals and 36 species. The highest dominant species was Anaspiatyrhynchos which occupied the $48.42\%$, the one followings were Anas crecca $(10.8\%)$, Tadorna tadorna $(9.7\%)$, Anas poecilorhyncha $(9.5\%)$ and Cygnus cygnus $(4.8\%)$. A regularly observed species in every months were 3 species, Egretta garzetta, Anas pin tyrhynchos and Anas poecilorhyncha. The Cygnus cygnus of specially protected species was observed the 232 individuals maximumly in November and the 125 individuals to a minimum in December. The index of species diversity was minimum 1.24 at October and maximum 2.01 at March. This area has provided a suitable roosting and feeding place for waterbirds. The peak count of the wintering whooper swan was 232 individuals in Gangjin Bay. Therefore, We need the conservation and management of Gangjiun Bay.
This paper deals with feeding site distribution aspect and seasonal distribution change of the wintering geese in Cheonsu bay and reclaimed area from October 2006 to March 2007. Geese were distributed mostly in agricultural land(rice field) during day time. According to the distribution map by maximum counts, observed geese of agricultural land were frequently distributed in large agricultural land. Especially, Geese were more used agricultural land near the reservoir where used as roosting site than the other sites. Diurnal feeding site of the geese were agricultural land near the reservoir with huge flock during early wintering season(October), but geese were used the agricultural land far from reservoir after mid wintering season(after January). The feeding flock size of Geese were decreased and feeding site was more far from the reservoir than in mid wintering season during late wintering season(March). Habitat use rate of the quadrat area where below 1km from the reservoir was most high in early wintering season. Contrary, habitat use rate where 2km far from the reservoir was shown lowest habitat use rate in early wintering season, but it was increased during mid wintering season(January) and decreased after mid wintering season. Habitat use rate of the agricultural land where 2km below and 1 km far from reservoir was shown middle rate, but it was increased until November and decreased after November. This result shown that feeding site preference of the wintering geese was affected by distance from roosting site(reservoir), and feeding site was changed as a food sources decreasing by stay time of geese flock.
The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae) infests citrus orchards, causing sooty mold damage to the fruits. This study was conducted to investigate the colonizing route of A. gossypii in citrus orchards in a non-heating plastic-film house during the early season. The overwintering eggs of the aphids are frequently found on summer shoots of the citrus trees. The eggs were mostly those of Aphis citricola, without any A. gossypii when hatched. The colonization of citrus trees by alate A. gossypii in non-heating plastic-film houses was mainly observed twice, with advanced flight in late April and delayed flight in late May. The delayed flight was synchronized with the timing of the emergence of alate A. gossypii from the fundatrix generation in the holocyclic life cycle. During advanced flight in closed citrus orchards, alate A. gossypii were caught in yellow water traps installed in the fields, and the populations were found to originate from the surviving populations of the anholocyclic life cycle. Consequently, we concluded that citrus tree colonization with A. gossypii occurred during the advanced flight of the anholocyclic and the delayed flight of the holocyclic life cycle.

The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella, overwinters in some protected areas in Korea. Using a sex pheromone trap, the adults were monitored since the occurrence of the overwintering populations. In Andong, P. xylostella exhibited four adult peaks in a year. Biological characters, such as cold tolerance, insecticide susceptibility, and developmental rate, were analyzed and showed a significant variation among different local overwintering populations. Population genetic variation was assessed with molecular markers, in which the initial high genetic variation among the overwintering populations decreased with the progress of seasons. These results suggests that there may be a significant migration of P. xylostella to decrease the genetic variation among the different local populations that are different in biological characters.

This study aimed to provide information on the biodiversity of various arthropods living in paddy fields during the winter season by examining their incidence density. Insect collection was carried out by 50 × 50 cm grids of soil surface and plants from paddy fields, as well as from ridges between paddies, using a battery-powered aspirator. The total number of individuals collected from paddy fields and inter-paddy ridges was 41,197, most of belonged to the orders Collembola, Hemiptera, and Diptera. Arthropods showed similar appearance patterns in fields under both organic and conventional farming. However, a higher number of insects was collected in organic farms. The species diversity, species richness, and species evenness were all greater in inter-paddy ridges than in paddy fields, in a statistically significant manner (P < 0.05).
Matsumuraeses phaseoli is one of the main pests that attack the flowers and pods of red bean (Vigna angularis) and mungbean (Vigna radiata) in Korea. To elucidate the developmental characteristics and over-wintering stage of M. phaseoli, several stages of the insect were observed through artificial rearing under outdoor conditions in Suwon ($37^{\circ}$16'N $126^{\circ}$59'E 35ASL), Korea. In colonies in which neonate larvae were reared at about 2-week intervals for more than a year, the developmental period from larva to adult emergence became longer from spring to summer, but shorter from summer to autumn; aestivation was not observed during the summer season. The colony in which rearing started on Oct 8, 2008 over-wintered as pupae and emerged in late April next year with a survival rate of 6%. However, the colony in which the rearing started on Oct 23, 2008 over-wintered as mature larvae, pupated in late April, and emerged in early and mid-May with a survival rate of 2%. When the fifth instar larvae were transferred outside from the laboratory ($25^{\circ}C$, 15L:9D) between November and February, no larvae could survive during the winter season. Some newly laid eggs and newly emerged adults could not hatch and could not survive, respectively, in outdoor conditions in November and December. These results suggest that neonate larvae of M. phaseoli that hatch in October can over-winter as late larvae or pupae in Suwon, Korea.
