  • Purpose: This study was designed to identify the effect of auriculotherapy on low abdominal pain and dysmenorrhea in school-aged girls. Methods: This design was a pre and post-test with nonequivalent groups. The subjects were 71 girls who were middle school students with dysmenorrheal (35 students for the treatment group and 36 students for the comparison group). The subjects of the treatment group received auriculotherapy once a week for 10 weeks. The comparison group received instruction on auriculotherapy and was requested waiting for the order. Results: The treatment group reported significantly less low abdominal pain than the comparison group. However, there were not statistical differences in reported dysmenorrhea. In future analysis, 60.0% of the treatment group reported more physical comfort, and 45.7% reported more emotional cool down. Conclusion: The finding indicate that auriculotherapy could be effective in decreasing low abdominal pain during menstrual periods. Therefore, auriculotherapy could be an effective nursing intervention for low abdominal pain occurring during mensuration. However, further studies need to be done to support auriculotherapy as effective.

The purpose of this study was to find out a possible integration of the Eastern-Western Nursing Sciences for Health Management of Women's with Menstrual Disorder and to suggest a distinct frame of Korean Nursing Intervention Method. In the last decade, the women's movement has succeeded in changing in inappropriate and poor treatment. The health consumer movement has also achieved many gains in improving the quality of health care. Yet the medical care offered women during their life stages is still characterized by a lack of effectiveness, safety, and consideration. Today, Although there are differences between Oriental and Western Medicine in approaches to clients, the Eastern-Western Nursing Sciences in approach to clients can be hoped that contribution will be made to the development of nursing intervention which is suitable to Korean context.

Methods: In order to conduct a meta-analysis, a total of 393 studies were retrieved from the database. Twenty-eight studies that were published from March 2001 to February 2011 were selected. Results: Intervention studies included seven studies on aromatherapy, five on auriculotherapy, three on each Koryo-Sooji-Chim and moxibustion, two on each heat therapy and magnetic therapy and six on other therapy. The effect size of the intervention studies on dysmenorrhea and menstrual distress was greater than 0.48 for Koryo-Sooji-Chim, moxibustion, aromatherapy, auriculotherapy and other therapy. Conclusion: This study suggests that drug free therapy can reduce the levels of menstrual distress, despite the small number of intervention studies and randomized controlled trials.

  • Purpose: In this study the impact of pro-environmental behavior, well-being oriented behavior, and use of cloth menstrual pads on dysmenorrhea in Korean female adults was examined according to the theory of reasoned action. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 195 Korean female adults. Data were collected from June to August, 2010 using self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, multiple regression, and logit regression with STATA 10.0. Results: Pro-environmental behavior explained 48% of well-being oriented behavior. Well-being oriented behavior explained 10% of cloth pad use. Use of cloth pad explained 4% of dysmenorrhea and 5% of menstrual pain. The path through well-being oriented behavior had a significant effect from pro-environmental behavior to cloth pad use. Conclusion: Use of cloth pad was significantly related with well-being oriented behavior, pro-environmental behavior, social influence, dysmenorrhea, and menstrual pain. The results of this study suggest that pro-environmental strategies can help health care providers diminish clients' menstrual symptoms. Nursing intervention can support pro-environmental behavioral strategies.

  • Purpose: This study was to review dysmenorrhea and its relief methods in nursing students by using base data for reducing dysmenorrhea. Method: The subjects were 92 students, data were collected by questionnaire surveys using convenience sampling and analyzed by the SPSS 12.0 program. Results: Medium amount of menstruation was most frequently answered and massage on painful sites was the most frequently used relief method(p<0.05). Frequency of medication was once a day during menstrual period, and methods that the most wanted to use when pain got severe was alternative methods(aroma, massage, and acupuncture)(p<0.05). Amount of menstruation showed a negative correlation with the duration(r=-0.32), dysmenorrhea was correlated with the severest days of dysmenorrhea(r=0.24) and the frequency of medication(r=-0.23). Conclusion: These results suggested that dysmenorrhea was correlated with the severest days of dysmenorrhea and the frequency of medication, but other variables showed no relations with menstrual characteristics.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was designed to identify the effects of heat therapy on dysmenorrhea, heat being provided using a far infrared rays heating element. Methods: The research design for the study was a non-equivalent control group quasi- experimental design. Participants were 22 students for the experimental group, and 26 students for the control group. Data were analyzed using SAS WIN 9.1 program. Results: The experimental group had significantly lower mean scores for menstrual pain, dysmenorrhea, and blood pressure than those in the control group. However, no significant differences were found between two groups for pulse, respiration, and temperature. Conclusion: These findings show that thermotherapy was effective for reduction of menstrual pain, dysmenorrhea, and B/P. Therefore, this therapy could be used as a nursing intervention for students with dysmenorrhea.
