  • When LPG leaks from the storage tank, the gas try to sink to the ground because LPG is heavier than air. The gas easily creates vapor clouds causing aggressive accidents in no airflow. Therefore, It is important to prevent in advance by analyzing the damaged range caused from LPG leakage and vapor clouds. So, this study analyzed the range of damaged by LPG leakage and vapor clouds with consideration of the cold air flow which is generated by the topographical characteristics and the land use status at night time in the Jeju Hagari. As a result of the cold air flow using KLAM_21, about 2 m/s of cold air was introduced in from the southeast due to the influence of the terrain. The range of damaged by LPG leakage and vapor cloud was analyzed using ALOHA. When the leak hole size is 10 cm at the wind speed of 2 m/s, the range corresponding to LEL 60 % (12,600 ppm) was 61 m which range is expected to influence in nearby residential areas. These results of this study can be used as basic data to prepare preventive measures of accidents caused by vapor cloud. Forward, it is necessary to apply CFD modeling such as FLACS to check the vapor cloud formation due to LPG leakage in a relatively narrow area and to check the cause analysis.

  • This study was based on the steel composite concrete box structure (Transfer girder) which was installed to support the skyscrapers directly above the subway line. In this study, it was analytically proved that the cause of cracks on the steel composite concrete box structure were the shrinkage cracks by comparing the results of crack investigation and numerical analysis. As the results, it was found that the internal temperature difference between concrete and steel members occurred according to the shape of the steel frame embedded in concrete, the location of vertical stiffener, and the closed section area. The narrower spacing of vertical stiffener was occurred the internal temperature concentration of the structure and the temperature difference increased. And the location of higher thermal strain and temperature were similar to the location of actual cracks by the visual inspection. Therefore, the internal temperature concentration parts were formed according to the presence and spacing of the vertical stiffeners and the inspection passage in the central part of the structure. The shrinkage cracks were occurred by the restrained of temperature expansion and contraction of the concrete. As the results of this study, it was important to separate and manage the non-structural cracks caused by shrinkage and the structural cracks in the maintenance of serviced steel-composite concrete structures.

  • The turnout system of the sleeper floating tracks (STEDEF) on urban transit is a Anti-vibration track composed of a wooden sleeper embedded in a concrete bed and a sleeper resilience pad under the sleeper. Therefore, deterioration and changes in spring stiffness of the sleeper resilience pad could be cause changes in sleeper support conditions. The damage amount of manganese crossings that occurred during the current service period of about 21 years was investigated to be about 17% of the total amount of crossings, and it was analyzed that the damage amount increased after 15 years of use (accumulated passing tonnage of about 550 million tons). In this study, parameter analysis (wheel position, sleeper support condition, and dynamic wheel load) was performed using a three-dimensional numerical model that simulated real manganese crossing and wheel profile, to analyze the damage type and cause of manganese crossing that occurred in the actual field. As a result of this study, when the voided sleeper occurred in the sleeper around the nose, the stress generated in the crossing nose exceeded the yield strength according to the dynamic wheel load considering the design track impact factor. In addition, the analysis results were evaluated to be in good agreement with the location of damage that occurred in the actual field. Therefore, in order to minimize the damage of the manganese crossing, it is necessary to keep the sleeper support condition around the nose part constant. In addition, by considering the uniformity of the boundary conditions under the sleepers, it was analyzed that it would be advantageous to to replace the sleeper resilience pad together when replacing the damaged manganese crossing.

  • The travel time of flash floods along mountain streams is mainly governed by reach-average velocity, rather than by the point velocity of the locations of interest. Reach-average velocity is influenced by various factors such as stream geometry, streambed materials, and the hydraulic roughness of streams. In this study, the reach-average velocity in mountain streams was measured for storm periods using rhodamine dye tracing. The point cloud data obtained from a LiDAR survey was used to extract the average hydraulic roughness height, such as Ra, Rmax, and Rz. The size distribution of the streambed materials (D50, D84) was also considered in the estimation of the roughness height. The field experiments revealed that the reach-average velocities had a significant relationship with flow discharges (v = 0.5499Q0.6165 ), with an R2 value of 0.77. The root mean square error in the roughness height of the Ra-based estimation (0.45) was lower than those of the other estimations (0.47-1.04). Among the parameters for roughness height estimation, the Ra -based roughness height was the most reliable and suitable for developing the reach-average velocity equation for estimating the travel time of flood waves in mountain streams.

  • Purpose: As fire accidents happen at the production and storage sites of superabsorbent polymers for convenience of daily life, an experimental study was conducted to secure basic data to establish practical preventive measures against them. Method: The sample container (20cm width × 20cm length) was made into a rectangular cuboid with the heights of 3cm, 5cm, 7cm, and 14cm, respectively, to allow access to the infinite flat plane. The front and back of the container were covered with a 300-mesh stainless steel mesh for one-dimensional heat transfer. The sample container was placed in the center of the thermostatic bath, which was heated to a predetermined temperature by setting the thermostat program in advance, and it was determined to be 'ignited' when the central temperature of the sample rose by more than 20℃ above the set temperature, and "unignited" when it was maintained at an approximate value of the set temperature. Result: The critical autoignition temperature was calculated to be 217.5℃ when the height of the sample container was 3 cm, 212.5℃ when it was 5 cm, 202.5℃ when it was 7cm, and 187.5℃ when it was 14cm. The ignition induction time to reach the maximum temperature was 34hours for 3cm, 76hours for 5cm, 143hours for 7cm, and 318hours for 14cm. Conclusion: ① As the size of the container increased, the autoignition temperature decreased and the induction time to reach the maximum temperature increased. ② An apparent activation energy was calculated to be 44.92kcal/mol, with a correlation of 96.93%.

  • The linear curve fitting methods such as the Hvorslev method and the Bouwer and Rice method provide a rapid and simple means to analyze slug test data for estimating in-situ hydraulic conductivity (k) of geologic material. However, when analyzing a slug test in a relatively compressible aquifer, these methods have difficulties in fitting a straight line to the semi-logarithmic plot of the test data that shows a concave-upward curvature because the linear curve fitting methods ignore the role of the compressibility or specific storage ($S_s$) of an aquifer. The comparison of the Hvorslev method and the Bouwer and Rice method is made far a partially-penetrating well geometry to show analytically that the Hvorslev method estimates higher hydraulic conductivity than the Bouwer and Rice method except that the well intake section locates very close to the bottom of the aquifer. The effect of fitting a straight line to the slug test data is evaluated along with the dimensionless compressibility parameter (${\alpha}$) ranging from 0.001 to 1. A modified linear curve fitting method that is expanded from Chirlin's approach to the case of a partially penetrating well with the basic-time-lag fitting method is introduced. A case study for a compressible glacial till is made to verify the proposed method by comparing with a type curve method (KGS method).

  • The mechanism of load transfer by punching shear in pile-supported embankments is investigated. Based on the geometric configuration of the punching shear observed in sand fills on soft ground, a theoretical analysis is carried out to predict the embankment loads transferred on a cap beam according to punching shear developed in pile-supported embankments. The equation presented by the theoretical analysis was able to consider the effect of various factors affecting the vertical loads transferred on the cap beam. The reliability of the presented theoretical equation is investigated by comparing it with the results of a series of model tests. The model tests were performed on cap beams, which had two types of width; one is narrow width and the other is wide width. Sand filling was performed through seven steps. Two types of loading pattern were applied at each filling step; one is the long-term loading, in which sand fills at each filling step were kept for 24 hours, the other is the short-term loading, in which sand fills at each filling step were kept for 2 hours. The vertical loads measured in all model tests show good agreement with the ones predicted by the theoretical equation. Finally, the predicted vertical loads also show good agreement with the vertical loads measured in a well-instrumented pile-supported embankment in field, where cap beams were placed on too wide space.

  • The element free Galerkin method is extended by the local partition of unity method to model the cohesive cracks in two dimensional continuum. The shape function of a particle whose domain of influence is completely cut by a crack is enriched by the step enrichment function. If the domain of influence contains a crack tip inside, it is enriched by a branch enrichment function which does not have the LEFM stress singularity. The discrete equations are obtained directly from the standard Galerkin method since the enrichment is only for the displacement field, which satisfies the local partition of unity. Because only particles whose domains of influence are influenced by a crack are enriched, the system matrix is still sparse so that the increase of the computational cost is minimized. The condition for crack growth in dynamic problems is obtained from the material instability; when the acoustic tensor loses the positive definiteness, a cohesive crack is inserted to the point so as to change the continuum to a discontiuum. The crack speed is naturally obtained from the criterion. It is found that this method is more accurate and converges faster than the classical meshless methods which are based on the visibility concept. In this paper, several well-known static and dynamic problems were solved to verify the method.

  • This study presents basic information on the mechanical properties and long-term deformations of high-strength steel fiber reinforced concrete(HSFRC). The Influence of steel fiber on modulus of elasticity, compressive, splitting tensile and flexural strength, and drying shrinkage and creep of HSFRC are investigated, and flexural fracture toughness is evaluated. Test results show that Test results show that the effect of steel fibers on the compressive strength is negligible, and the modulus of elasticity of HSFRC increased with the increase of fiber volume fraction. And the effect of fiber volume fraction($V_f$) and aspect ratio($l_f/d_f$) on tensile strength, flexural strength and toughness is extremely prominent. It is observed that the flexural deflection corresponded to ultimate load increased with the increase of $V_f$ and $l_f/d_f$, and due to fiber arresting cracking, the shape of the descending branch of load-deflection tends towards gently. Also, the effect of addition of various amounts of fiber on the creep and shrinkage is obvious. Especially, the effect of adding fibers to high-strength concrete is more pronounced in reducing the drying shrinkage than the creep.
