A Modified Attribution-Affection Model of Public Discrimination against Persons with Mental Illness -Model comparisons among schizophrenia, depression and alcoholism- (정신장애인의 사회적 거리감에 대한 수정된 귀인정서모형 적용 - 정신장애 유형별 모형비교 -)

  • Recently, the many anti- stigma program use the 'mental illness is an illness like any other biogenetic illness' approach. This is based on Weiner's attribution affection theory. However, mental illness is difficult to be applied with attribution affection premise because attributing no blame for mental problem(biogenetic cause) leads to fear and dangerousness. We proposed a modified attribution affection model that explains the relations between biogenetic causal belief and social distance. Our model assumed that attributing personal responsibility for each mental problem leads to anger and social distance. And attributing no blame for mental problem(biogenetic causal belief) reinforces perception of dangerousness and social distance. This study presented typical vignettes of schizophrenia, depression and alcoholism according to the diagnosis criteria of DSM-IV to 768 university students randomly. Path analysis was used to test modified attribution affection model. The major findings are, First our original model modified partially for fit index. So final model assumed that i) The more respondents believed personal responsibility, the more anger, the more anger reaction corresponded closely with more social distance. ii) biogenetic causal beliefs leads to a worsening of dangerousness and perception of dangerousness leads to a increasing of social distance. Second, multi-group analysis was conducted to verify how a modified attribution affection model would be applicable to three groups. The result is that there is no difference among three groups. Finding from this research suggest to change anti-stigma program that use medical model.

폴리펩타이드의 가능한 이차 구조에 대한 계산화학적 연구

  • 펩타이드 중합체의 이차 구조는 화학적, 생물학적 기능을 갖는 단백질 삼차 구조를 결정하는 중요한 구성요소이다. 이러한 단백질의 이차구조에 대한 정보는 치매, 광우병과 같은 단백질 응집관련 질병에서 응집유발 단백질의 형성과정 및 안정도와 밀접한 연관이 있다. 본 연구는 폴리알라닌을 모델 펩타이드로 선택하여, 이들의 가능한 7가지 이차구조들에 대한 구조적, 열역학적 특성을 계산화학방법을 통해 비교 분석하였다. 우선 기체상에서 7가지 구조들의 구조최적화를 통해 상대적 안정도를 비교하였고, 나아가 EDISON의 용매화 자유 에너지의 열역학적 계산방법을 통해 수용액상에서의 상대적인 안정도와 그 원인을 비교, 분석하였다. 특히, 기체상에서와 수용액상애서 폴리알라닌 이차구조들의 상대적 안정도가 바뀌는 원인에 대해, 폴리알라닌의 구조적 특징과 수소결합과의 상관관계를 통해 규명하였다. 본 연구에서 밝힌 단백질 이차 구조의 상대적 안정도 및 물과의 상관관계에 미치는 구조적, 열역학적 원인은 응집 유발 단백질에서 제시된 특정 이차 구조의 선택적 안정성에 대한 근거를 제시하며, 그 기작을 이해하는 중요한 단서를 제공한다.

  • Polyoma Virus Enhancer core Binding Protein (PEBP2)는 유전자의 전사를 조절하는 hetero-dimeric transcription factor로서 $\alpha$$\beta$ subunit으로 구성되어 있다. $\alpha$ subunit을 coding 하는 유전자중 하나인 PEBP2aB는 급성백혈병과 관련되어있는 t(8;21) 또는 t(12;21)에 의하여 변형됨으로서 백혈병 발병의 원인이 되고 있다 (Miyoshi et al., 1993; .Romana et al., 1995). $\beta$ subunit을 coding 하는 PEBP2$\beta$도 inv(16)에 의하여 변형됨으로서 백혈병을 유도하는 주요 원인이 되고 있다 (Liu et al., 1993). 이 유전자들의 생물학적 활성을 밝히기 위한 연구가 gene targeting에 의한 knockout mouse 생산 방법으로 수행되었다. 그 결과 PEBP2$\alpha$B와 PEBP2$\beta$ 유전자가 definitive hematopoiesis에 있어서 결정적으로 중요한 역할을 하고 있음이 관찰되었다 (Okuda et al., 1996, Wang et al., 1996a, 1996b), 이는 이들 유전자가 bematopoietic master switch 유전자임을 밝힌 중요한 결과로서 이로부터 혈액학 연구 분야의 새로운 장이 열리게 되었다. 또한 이러한 연구 결과들은 PEBP2 family에 속하는 다른 유전자의 생물학적 활성의 연구를 촉진하는 계기가 되었다. 최근 PEBP2$\alpha$A 유전자가 결손된 마우스가 생산되었는데 이 유전자의 경우에는 모든 종류의 뼈의 생성이 완전히 결손됨이 관찰되었다 (Komori et al., 1997). 이는 PEBP2$\alpha$A 유전자가 뼈의 생성을 지배하는 master switch 유전자임을 보여주는 중요한 관찰로서 bone biologist 들의 큰 관심을 모으고 있다. 본 연구팀은 PEBP2 family 유전자 중 유일하게 아직 생물학적 활성이 규명되지 않은 PEBP2$\alpha$C 유전자의 활성을 knockout 마우스를 생산하는 방법에 의하여 분석하였으며 소화기관의 형성에 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 확인하였다.

  • For the genetic development of more powerful antagonistic Pseudomom - YPL-1 as a biocontxol agent against soilborne plant pathogenic Fuaarium solani causing root rot of many important crops, mutants improving the productivity of chitinase were obtained by mutation with UV radiation or NTG treatment, P. stutzeri YPL-M26 (UV mutant) and P. stutzeri YPL-MI78 (NTG mutant) could improve the productivity of chitinase by 2.5 and 2.0 times, and its antifungal activity by 1.7 and 1.5 times, respectively. The antifungal mechanism of P. stutzeri YPL-M26 was caused by lysis of the fungal cell wall by hydrolytic enzymes such as chitinase. The antifungal activity of crude chitinase of P. stutzeri YPLM26 on the mycelial growth of F. solani was observed to be much higher than that of the original strain. The enzymes produced by P. stutzeri YPL-M26 were the same as the original strain in enzymatic properties such as optimal pH and temperature.

  • This was the second study on the ecological characteristics of the epiphytes on seagrass leaf. The objective of this study was to understand the variation of epiphytes on seagrass leaf depending on the change of physico-chemical factors such as salinity, nutrients, and etc. This study showed the four results. 1) The eelgrass growth was influenced by water temperature, suggesting the positive correlation between eelgrass growth and water temperature. 2) The epiphytes growth on seagrass leaves did not show the correlation with water temperature, but negatively correlated with salinity. 3) The eelgrass growth decreased when the concentraion of nitrogen increased. 4) However, loads of epiphytes increased when the concentration of total nitogen (TN), nitrate ($NO_3^-$), and nitrite ($NO_2^-$) were high. This increase of epiphytes growth could be suggested in the cause-effect pathway of nutrient enrichment leading to seagrasses loss.

  • It has been noted that the main cause of biodiversity loss is influx of alien species. Specifically, habitats destruction, economic loss, and human injury are increasing due to invasive alien species. There were 2,167 alien species in Korea. 21 alien species of extraterrestrials including Lycorma delicatula, Solenopsis invicta, Myocastor coypus, and Spartina alterniflora at high risk through ecological risk assessment, are designated as invasive alien species. Alert species, which may have negative impact on ecosystems when they are introduced into the country, are assigned to 127 species through the ecosystem risk evaluation. To list such alien species to prevent invasion of alien species in advance, and to minimize damage caused by imported alien species, a national level management system called the Conservation and Use of Biological deversity Act was established, but there is a lack of a systematic management system in accordance with degree of risk. There is also a risk assessment chart should be developed thatreflects ecological characteristics of each taxon and evaluation criteria in predicting the risk.

  • A bacterium(Y-5) which has potent antibacterial activity against swine atrophic rhinitis bacteria (Bordetella bronchiseptica, Pasteurella multocida) was isolated from soil and identified as a strain of Bacillus sp. Y-5 upon investigation of the morphological and physiological characteristics. The culture broth obtained from incubation of the Y-5 strain at $30^{\circ}C$ for 21 h in tryptose-bouillon agar medium (pH 6.0) showed active antibacterial activity against Bordetella bronchiseptica and the culture broth that of $30^{\circ}C$, pH 6.5, 18 h showed active antibacterial activity against Pasteurella multocida.

Relativeness Between Mineral Element of Soil and Occurrence of Tipburn in Chinese Cabbage (토양의 무기성분과 배추의 Tipburn 발생과 관련성)

  • In order to understand the mechanism of the wide occurrence of tipburn phenomenon in Chinese cabbage grown under protected cultivation, Chinese cabbage cultivated in two experimental plots was analyzed based on the distribution of some mineral elements by region in the plant and in the soil. The following results were obtained : 1) The occurrence of tipburn is not related to the concentration of Ca in the soil. 2) The concentration of Ca by region in the plant increased in the order such as inner leaf < middle leaf < outer leaf and inner vein < middle vein < outer vein. 3) From this results the cause of occurrence of tipburn phenomenon in Chinese cabbage which occurred at fixed times in the growth and development of the plant can be controlled by modifying environmental factors in order to prevent excessive transpiration in the inner leaf.

  • Many studies suggest a role for specific types of the Human Papillomavirus(HPV) in certain human neoplasms. In recent years, a numbers of studies have been reported linking the presence of HPV DNAs to a variety of carcinomas of the head and neck. We made the cloning of the Ll and L2 open reading frames of the HPV type 16 and 31 and expressed them in the baculovirus system. Those expressed Ll, L2 proteins will be used various ways to study the relationship between HPV and head and neck cancers.
