  • In this study, an off-design performance analysis procedure is developed based on Two-zone model and TEIS model. In Two-zone model, there are both primary zone and secondary zone for an isentropic core flow and an average of all non-isentropic streamtubes respectively. The level of the core flow diffusion in an impeller is calculated by using TEIS model which regards the impeller as two successive rotating elements in series. At impeller exit, the mixing process occurs with an increase in entropy, that is to say, a decrease in total pressure. In loss models including Two-zone and TEIS model, some empirical parameters have a great influence on overall performance curve. So these parameters' influences on the overall performance curve are investigated and compared with experimental data.

  • In this study, flow structure in a two-stage centrifugal compressor for a turbo-chiller with the refrigerant, R134a, was numerically investigated at the design point of the compressor using a commercial code. Flow characteristics in the passages of impeller, diffuser and return channel were analyzed in detail including velocity vector, secondary flow, Mach number and pressure contours in blade spanwise and meridional plane for each stage. The estimation on the one-dimensional output from the preliminary design and three-dimensional shape of the impeller blade and the meridional shape of the return channel were performed through the flow analysis, while some numerical schemes and techniques including Multiple Frames of Reference technique, real gas property data and inlet boundary condition changes, which were used in CFD, were compared with their features. The results will be used as reference data for a new design of 3-D impeller shape to improve R134a compressor performance.

  • Flows in the centrifugal compressor volute with circular cross section are numerically investigated. The computational grid for the calculation utilized a multi-block arrangement to form a butterfly grid and flow calculations are performed using commercial CFD software, CFX-TASCflow. The centrifugal compressor of this study has axial diffuser after radial diffuser because of the shape of inlet duct and installation constraints. Due to this feature the swirling flow pattern is different from the other investigations. The flow inside volute is very complex and three dimensional with strong vortex and recirculation through volute tongue. The calculation results show circumferential variations of the swirl and through flow velocity and pressure distribution. The mechanism deciding flow structure is explained by considering the force balance in volute cross section. And static pressure recovery and total pressure loss are estimated from the calculated results and compared with Japikse model.

  • This paper describes aerodynamic preliminary design performance prediction and flow analysis for centrifugal compressor of the marine middle engine turbocharger. The performance characteristics of turbocharger compressor are investigated at various operating conditions using mass flow rate and revolution speed, and computational flow analysis for impeller and diffuser at design point are performed. Preliminary design results correspond to actual compressor geometric values comparatively by applying modified slip factor. Performance prediction and flow analysis results show good agreement with experiments. Therefore, this will provide the performance prediction in preliminary design, and help to increase the design capability for optimized impeller.

  • The aim of this paper is to understand the unsteady flow phenomena in a high speed centrifugal compressor channel diffuser. Instantaneous pressures aye measured at six locations in the diffuser using fast-response pressure transducers. Instantaneous pressure ratio decomposition was applied to analyze the pressure signal. In vaneless space where impeller-vaned diffuser interaction is strong, aperiodic unsteadiness is high and periodic pressure waveforms by blade passing are not clear at low flow rates, especially near vane suction side. High aperiodic unsteadiness decreases downstream of diffuser. The blade-to-blade pressure wave does not disappear in surge flow condition. In surge there exist not only large scale periodic surge wave but also blade-to-blade pressure wave.

  • In this paper, shape optimization based on three-dimensional flow analysis has been performed for impeller design of centrifugal compressor. To evaluate the objective function of an isentropic efficiency, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model. The governing equations are discretized by finite volume approximations. The optimization techniques based on the radial basis neural network method are used for the optimization. Latin hypercube sampling as design of experiments is used to generate thirty design points within design space. Sequential quadratic programming is used to search the optimal point based on the radial basis neural network model. Four geometrical variables concerning impeller shape are selected as design variables. The results show that the isentropic efficiency is enhanced effectively from the shape optimization by the radial basis neural network method.

  • This paper presents a numerical investigation of the influence of the blade back sweep angle on the performance and flow characteristics in a centrifugal compressor with a vaneless diffuser. Five impellers with different back sweep angles were tested in the flow simulations. It was found that a low back sweep angle could improve the total-to-total pressure ratio and the work coefficient over whole operating ranges. However, the flow field in an impeller with a low back sweep angle produced a more non-uniform velocity distribution at the impeller exit because the wake region was significantly increased. As a consequence, the impeller with a low back sweep angle caused a low diffuser performance.

  • The performance database of small-sized centrifugal compressors is needed for the design of high performance machines and also for the verification of design tools and analysis software. An impeller is designed, manufactured and tested. The effects of several parameters on the evaluation of performance are investigated and the performance test of parallel diffuser is also carried out. The proper estimation of static pressure, total temperature and blockage at the impeller exit is important for performance evaluation. 4 method in cooperation with 3-D calculation is suggested. The measured performances are in a good agreement with the predicted results. However, there are some discrepancies in efficiency.

  • Effects of inlet distorted flow on performance, stall and surge are experimentally investigated for a high-speed centrifugal compressor. Tested results for the distorted inlet flow cases are compared with the result of the undistorted one. The performance of compressor is slightly deteriorated due to the inlet distortion. The inlet distortion does not affect the number of stall cell and the propagation velocity. It also does not change stall inception flow rate. However, as the distortion increases, stall starts at the higher flow rate for low speed and at the lower flow rate for high speed. For 50,000 rpm stall occurrs as the flow rate decreases, however disappears fur the smaller flow rate. This is due to the interaction of surge and stall. After the stall and surge interact, the number of stall cell decreases.

  • Some sized centrifugal compressor were designed and their performance measured to investigate the effects of exit blade thickness, width and back swept angle. The impeller of larger blade thickness shows low pressure ratio compared with that of smaller one. Backswept angle have also large effect on the efficiency. Measured values of slip factor are quite different from the estimated values of Wiesner-Busemann model and increase with the flow rate.
