This study examined the perception of driving ability of drivers under stressful situation and it attempted to collect the base data in an effort to prevent the traffic accidents by the women drivers. For this purpose, 180 drivers residing in the Seoul and Gyeonggi region were selected to find out how they perceive their driving ability and driving ability of the others, and in particular, study was focused on in what kind of situation female drivers felt most stress out. Looking in relation to the driving ability, female drivers tend to assess overly high on driving ability of male drivers while making excessively low on the abilities of other female drivers. Looking into the stress of female drivers while driving, the female drivers experience more stress during driving compared to the male drivers. This type of result indicates that the women lack the confidence on driving abilities while experiencing severe stress on the driving performance.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of visual perception on driving performance and the importance of visual training for improving driving performance in patients with stroke. Methods : The evaluations, using MVPT(Motor-free Visual Perception Test), TMT A&B(Trail Making Test A & B), UFOV(Useful Field Of View test), and a driving simulator, were carried out with patients in department of physical medicine and rehabilitation in a rehabilitation hospital from October 2014 to November 2014. Results : Driving performance was related to the ability of various visual perceptions of patients with stroke, and the highest correlation was found in the UFOV subtest 2, TMT B, and MVPT. The results of discriminant analysis indicated a sensitivity of 100.0%, specificity of 80.0%, and predicted the results of the driving simulator with 89.5% accuracy. Conclusion : This study found that visual-perception skills influence driving performance and suggested the importance of visual-perception skill training for driving.
The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships among the older drivers' subjective evaluation and objective performances for driving ability, mobility and subjective well-being. Scores for mobility and subjective well-being were obtained using questionnaires. Diagram-based driving scenarios and driving simulation were used to measure subjective and objective driving abilities, respectively. The results can be summarized as followings. First, subjective evaluation scores of driving ability but not objective driving performance significantly correlated with mobility. Second, the higher level of mobility predicted higher life satisfaction, higher positive affectivity, and lower negative affectivity. Third, the older driver's higher scores of subjective driving ability induced higher level of mobility, which, in turn, increased life satisfaction and positive affectivity but lower negative affectivity. The results suggested that subjective rather than objective ability for driving is more important in determining the level of old driver's subjective well-being.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to compare with the effects of driving simulator and Dynavision training after stroke through the test of cognitive ability and driving performance. Methods : Twenty-one stroke patients were randomly classified to the driving simulator training group (N=11) and Dynavision training group (N=10), and were carried out respectively training for 15 times. The driving performances was measured by the driving simulator test, and cognitive-perceptive abilities was measured by the DriveABLE Cognitive Assessment Tool, Trail Making Test-A, Trail Making Test-B and Mini Mental State Examination-K. Results : The driving simulator training group showed significant changes in all cognitive tests and most of driving performances. The Dynavision training group also showed significant changes in all cognitive tests except for Trail Making Test-A and some driving performances. The significant differences on both groups were found regarding the estimated degree of results on the on-road evaluation, the number of off road accidents and collisions. In addition, the causal influence of the two training methods on these variables was analyzed to be more than 20%. Conclusion : The driving simulator and Dynavision training were found to be effective intervention in the driving rehabilitation after stroke. In particular, it was confirmed that the driving simulator is an effective training to improve overall driving ability of stroke patients. In addition, the difference in training effect between the two training methods was found to be more than 20%.
Objective : This study aims to identify the self-reported driving abilities of elderly drivers and their correlations to the demographic factors that influence them, and to verify the adequacy of the hypothetical model, constructed based on vision, auditory, cognition, motor, and psychological factors, in order to present a path model on the self-reported driving abilities of elderly drivers. Methods : The participants in this study were 122 elderly drivers aged 65 years or older residing in the community. This study evaluated the following factors of the participants: Vision and hearing, motor ability, cognitive ability, depression, self-reported driving abilities. Results : The results of this study are as follows. In the case of men, the self-reported driving ability score was higher than for women, and those driving 6-7 days per week had higher scores than those driving 3 days or less. The period of holding a driver's license and driving experience positively correlated with self-reported driving abilities. The final model of factors influencing the self-reported driving abilities of elderly drivers had a p value (.911) exceeding .05; TLI (1.202), NFI (.949), and CFI (1.000) of over .90; and RMSEA (.000) of lower than 0.1, indicating that the hypothesis model fit the data well. First, the directly influential factors on the self-reported driving abilities of elderly drivers were depression, decreased hearing, and grip strength. Second, age was found to have a direct influence on depression and grip strength; moreover, depression and grip strength as a mediator indirectly influenced their self-reported driving abilities. Third, depression was found to have a direct influence on their delayed cognitive processing and grip strength. Conclusion : The significance of this study is in the identification of direct and indirect factors influencing the self-reported driving abilities of elderly drivers in regional communities, and in the verification of multi-dimensional effects of diverse factors influencing such abilities.
This study investigated the relationship between older driver's safe driving behavior, driving mobility(amount of driving, assessment for driving-related physical ability, confidence for adaptation in driving situation, amount of social activity) and subjective well-being(life satisfaction, positive/negative affect). The data of these variables were collected by questionnaire method based on face-to-face interview. The results can be summarized as followings. First, the older driver who reported higher scores in the self-report safe driving behavior questionnaire tended to show higher level of subjective well-being and driving-based mobility. Second, all the sub-factors in the driving-based mobility questionnaire were positively related to life satisfaction, positive affect but negatively related to negative affect except amount of driving. Finally, it was found that both confidence for adaptation in driving situation and amount of social activity positively mediated the relationship between self-report safe driving behavior and life satisfaction and positive affect, but confidence for adaptation in driving situation negatively mediated the relationship between self-report safe driving behavior and negative affect, Implication and suggestion were discussed.

This study investigated the differential effects of subjective evaluation for attention and situation adaptability, and motivation on driving mobility as a function of driver's age. The results can be summarized as followings. First, subjective capability evaluation tended to decrease as the drivers' age increased, and lower evaluation for situation adaptability seemed to be recognized earlier than attentional ability in middle-aged drivers. Second, although subjective evaluation for attentional ability predicted positively driving mobility of all age groups, but only subjective evaluation for situation adaptability predicted positively driving mobility of older drivers. Third, among motivational elements, BAS predicted positively driving mobility of young and middle-aged driviers, whereas BIS predicted positively driving mobility of older drivers. Finally, middle-aged drivers tended show increased driving mobility when their attentional ability score and BAS were high, whereas older drivers showed lowest level of driving mobility when their situation adaptability score and BIS were low. These results suggest importance of integrated consideration for drivers' subjective evaluation for attention and situation adaptability, and motivation to understand characteristics of driving mobility in different age groups.
