A Study on the Performance Comparison of Container Terminal Operators in Busan Port and Shanghai Port (부산항과 상하이항 컨테이너 터미널 운영사의 경영성과 비교에 관한 연구)

  • Due to the continuous increasement of the container cargoes, each container port market has been growing as well. Moreover, the competition among container terminal operators located in the same port is also growing in order to attract more container cargoes. This paper looked into the market structures, market conducts and market performances of container ports in Busan and Shanghai. The index which has been most widely used to measure market structure, the Hirschman-Herfindahl Index (HHI), is computed by squaring each supplier's market share, then adding the squared shares. This paper estimated the market performance as profitability (PCM, ROA), growth (total TEU, rate of the increasement of TEU) and examined the effects of the HHI on the profitability and growth in a container terminal operators in Korea and China. The major findings of this study is that the market structure has effects on market performance in Busan port (total TEU) and Shanghai port (PCM, ROA and total TEU). As a result of analysing this study, market structure has an effect on market performance in Busan and Shanghai port, but the power of influence can be changed by market concentration index and various market conduct of companies.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the concentration effect of Busan container terminal. Productivity and efficiency have played key role to attract more cargo to a port because these are important factors to select liners’ calling port in vessel deployment. It means that productivity directly links with the liners’ vessel operation cost. The main results of this paper are as follows: the port concentration by terminal integration can improve the port's external image with recovering tariff competitiveness and also facilitate economic effect of size through efficient management.

  • This paper focuses on the integration aspect of operators to determine an improvement strategy for the operating system to enhance competitiveness of Busan Port. This Study proposes the following alternatives: valuation standards for the integration of operators, the road map for the integration period, the scope and role setting of integrated operators' participation of Busan Port Authority(BPA), and the separation and linkage North Port and the New Port operators. First, the valuation standards for operator integration should be based on international standards. Additionally quantitative factors such as financial situation, business performance and participating companies' profitability, and the qualitative factors such as management ability, technology, and labor relations should be considered. Second, the timing of North Port's operator integration should be prioritized in the short term in conjunction with the commencement of its phase 2-4, 2-5, and 2-6. The integration of New Port operators should provide a road map for a relatively long-term perspective. Third, the participation of BPA' integrated operators should be considered in terms of publicity as a policy coordinator between terminals and by pursuing the profitability of entering into overseas business by fostering Korean global terminal operators. The scope and role of participation ensures that the experience and technology of the terminal operation business is maximized. Fourth, because physically intergrating the North Port' operator into a single corporate form is difficult, initially establishing a special purpose company to maximize the effect of the integrated operation is necessary. Then, the operators decided to convert to a holding company given the termination of the lease term contract with the State or BPA, and ultimately proposed a merger into a single corporation.

  • Focal companies (hereafter called buyers) adopt outsourcing practices from a supply chain management strategy to be competitive. Buyers face the bridge transfer after outsourcing contracts, and the monitoring practices would be the only control mechanism left to prevent losing control over the suppliers. This study suggests the set of monitoring practices (i.e., capability, activity and outcome monitoring) as the independent variables to enhance the buyer-supplier collaboration and supplier's performance. In addition the buyer's efforts of monitoring are assumed to influence the buyer's shop floor productivity mediated by the supplier's performance and buyer-supplier collaboration. The results showed that the monitoring practices are meaningful antecedents to the supplier's performance and buyer-supplier collaboration, which fully mediates between the monitoring practices and buyer's shop floor productivity. The mediating role of the buyer-supplier collaboration between activity monitoring and shop floor productive has been rejected, because the negative effect of activity monitoring on buyer-supplier collaboration conflicts with the positive impact of buyer-supplier collaboration on shop floor productive. The theoretical contribution and managerial implications with limitations have been discussed.

  • The mutual risk management in port is really important for operating the enterprise between container terminals who provide port service and shipping liners who use the port service. This study is performed to contribute to obtain the competitive power of domestic shipping and harbor industry by getting solution of mutual risk management which can make Win-Win strategy on each other as an alternative idea. We suggested two kinds of management models to promote common benefits between container terminals and shipping liners. It is necessary to push positive support and cooperation from government and belonging related organizations for activating the Gwangyang port. In this study, we presented the efficient method to manage mutual risks between container terminals and shipping liners.
