  • Optical measurements of turbid biological tissue have provided a means to study tissue metabolism, tissue blood perfusion and blood oxygenation non-invasively. We used the red light of 660nm and infrared of 880nm to measure the blood fractional volume and oxygen saturation of biological tissue. In vivo reflectance data were obtained the physiological change from the deep tissue in human subject. The data evaluation was assessed by examining the slopes of the plotter index for the changes in oxygen saturation and blood fraction volume. The index is the natural logarithm of the ratio of reflected light intensity from measured medium to reference intensity at each wavelength. According to the experimental results, oxygen index changes significantly in the muscle of calf during exercise.

  • Blink reflex could be a useful tool to differentiate facial synkinesis as one of complications of facial neuropathy, from volitional associated movements. We had performed applied blink reflex test for 23 patients with objective evidence of hemifacial weakness in which orbicularis oculi muscle(zygomatic branch) and mentalis muscle(mandibular branch) are electrophysiologically evaluated in response to supraorbital stimulation of trigeminal nerve. For an unaffected side of face there is no evidence of positive blink reflex from the mentalis muscle. We concluded that a positive blink reflex from mentalis muscle is almost always suggestive of chronic facial neuropathy even in clinical silence of facial synkinesis, or an aberrant reinnervation after peripheral facial neuropathy, and does not electrophysiologically correlate with the severity of facial palsy.

  • A control of the body posture and movement is maintained by the vestibular system, vision, and proprioceptors. Afferent signals from those receptors are transmitted to the vestibular nuclear complex, and the efferent signals from the vestibular nuclear complex control the eye movement and skeletal muscle contract. The postural disturbance caused by loss of the vestibular function results in nausea, vomiting, vertigo and loss of craving for life. The purpose of this study is to develop a off-vertical rotatory system for evaluating the function of semicircular canals and otolith organs, selectively, and visual stimulation system for- stimulation with horizontal, vortical and 3D patterns. The Off-vortical axis rotator is composed of a comportable chair, a DC servo-motor with reducer and a tilting table controlled by PMSM. And a double feedback loop system containing a velocity feedback loop and a position feedback loop is applied to the servo controlled rotatory chair system. Horizontal, vertical, and 3D patterns of the visual stimulation for applying head mounted display are developed. And wireless portable systems for optokinetic stimulation and recording system of the eye movement is also constructed. The gain, phase, and symmetry is obtained from analysis of the eye movement induced by vestibular and visual stimulation. Detailed data were described.

  • CIMT(Constraint Induced Movement Therapy) is to improve the function and use of damaged upper limbs by not only confinement of unaffected limbs' exercise but also inducement of affected limbs' one. The purpose of the study is to verify the effect of CIMT by means of motor behaviour test and immunohistochemistry, using animal models. This study was analyzed using 40 male Sprague-Dawley rats as the experimental groups and 40 ones as the control groups. The rats were divided into two random groups : one group as an experimental group which was operated on under anesthesia and removed somatomotor regions with CIMT and the other as the control group without CIMT.Postural Reflex Test, Beam Walking Test, Limb Placement Test and Immunohistochemistry were run on the day 1, 3 , 7 and day 14 following surgery to each 10 rat. As a result, this study demonstrates that CIMT might be an effect method to verify the plasticity of central nervous system as motor behaviour test made all high scores (p<.05) and BDNF was high too in experimental groups.

  • We propose a new saccadic eye movement system with visual selective attention. Saliency map models generate the scan pathways in a natural scene, of which the output makes an attended location. Saccadic eye movement model is used for producing the target trajectories to move the attended locations very rapidly. To categorize human saccadic eye movement, saccadic eye movement model was divided into three parts, each of which was then individually modeled using different neural networks to reflect a principal functionality of brain structures related with the saccadic eye movement in our brain. Based on the proposed saliency map models and the saccadic eye movement model, an active vision system using a CCD type camera and BLDC motor was developed and demonstrated with experimental results.

  • A set of experiments (Shallow Water 2006, SW06) was carried out in shallow water near the New Jersey shelf break in summer 2006. Significant fluctuations in direct and surface reflected arrivals were observed from the chirp data (1100~2900 Hz) measured on a vertical line array. This paper presents a geoacoustic inverssion technique for short-range acoustic data with fluctuating arrivals and inversion results of experimental data. In order to reduce effects of random sea surface on the inversion, the acoustic energy back-propagated from the array to the source through direct and bottom-reflected paths is defined as the objective function. A multi-step inversion scheme is applied to the data using VFSR (Very Fast Simulated Reannealing) optimization technique. The inversion results show a source depth oscillation period equal to the measured ocean surface wave period. The inverted bottom sound speed is 1645 m/s and is similar to that estimated by other work at the same site.

  • Reflection coefficients of wave due to the types of a submerged breakwater on the inclined incident wave are numerically computed by using boundary element method. The analysis method is based on the wave pressure function with the continuity in the analytical region including fluid and structures. When compared with the existing results on the inclined incident wave, the results of this study show good agreement. It is found that both maximum and minimum values of the reflection coefficient are appeared frequently, as the width of a submerged breakwater becomes wider, and the reflection coefficient increase, as the wave period is longer. In addition, the effect on the reflection coefficient due to the change of submerged breakwater hight is lager than that due to the change of submerged breakwater width. The results indicate that dissipating characteristics of wave due to the types of a submerged breakwater own high dependability regarding the change of inclined incident waves. Therefore, the results of this study is estimated to be applied as an accurate numerical analysis referring to inclined incident waves in real sea.

  • Purpose: In radiotherapy that takes into account respiration using a RPM (Real time Position Management, Varian, USA) system, which can treat in consideration of the movement of tumor, infrared reflective markers supplied by manufacturers cannot obtain respiratory signal if the couch rotates at a certain angle or larger. In order to solve this problem, the author developed the 3D infrared reflective marker named 'Kw-marker' that can obtain respiratory signal at any angle, and evaluate its usefulness. Materials and Methods: In order to measure the stability of respiratory signal, we put the infrared reflective marker on the 3D moving phantom that can reproduce respiratory movement and acquired respiratory signal for 3 minutes under each of 3 conditions (A: $couch\;0^{\circ}$, a manufacturer's infrared reflective marker B: $couch\;0^{\circ}$, Kw-marker C: $couch\;90^{\circ}$, Kw-marker). By analyzing the respiratory signal using a breath analysis program (Labview Ver. 7.0), we obtained the peak value, valley value, standard deviation, variation value, and amplitude value. In order to examine the rotation error and moving range of the target, we placed a B.B phantom on the 3D moving phantom, and obtained images at a couch angle of $0^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ using OBI, and then acquired the X, Y and Z values (mm) of the ball bearing at the center of the B.B phantom. Results: According to the results of analyzing the respiratory signal, the standard deviation at the peak value was A: 0.002, B: 0.002 and C: 0.003, and the stability of respiration for amplitude was A: 0.15%, B: 0.14% and C:0.13%, showing that we could get respiratory signal stably by using the Kw-marker. When the couch rotated $couch\;90^{\circ}$, the mean rotation error of the ball bearing, namely, the target was X: -1.25 mm, Y: -0.45 mm and Z: +0.1 mm, which were within 1.3 mm on the average in all directions, and the difference in the moving range of the target was within 0.3 mm. Conclusion: When we obtained respiratory signal using the Kw-marker in non-coplanar treatment where the couch rotated, we could acquire respiratory signal stably and the Kw-marker was effective enough to substitute for the manufacturer's infrared reflective marker. When the rotation error and moving range of the target were measured, there was little difference, indicating that the displacement of the reflector movement in couch rotation is the cause of change in the scale and amplitude of respiratory signal. If the converted value of amplitude height according to couch angle is studied further and applied, it may be possible to perform non-coplanar phase-based gating treatment.

  • A numerical modeling has become increasingly popular and more important to the study of water waves with a rapid advancement of computer technology. However, different types of problems are induced during simulating wave motion. One of the key problems is re-reflection to a computation domain at the incident boundary. The internal wave generating-absorbing boundary conditions have been commonly used in numerical wave models to prevent re-reflection. For the Navier-Stokes equations model, the internal wave maker using a mass source function of the continuity equation has been used to generate various types of waves. Nonetheless, almost every numerical experiment is performed in two dimensions and only a few tests have been expanded to three dimensions. More recently, a momentum source function of the Boussinesq equations is applied to generate essentially directional waves in the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations model. In this study, the internal wave maker using a momentum source function is employed to generate targeted linear waves in the three-dimensional LES model.

  • In the research of biomechanical engineering, robotics and neurophysiology, to clarify the mechanism of human bipedal walking is of major interest. It serves as a basis of developing several applications such as rehabilitation tools and humanoid robots. Nevertheless, because of complexity of the neuronal system that interacts with the body dynamics system to make walking movements, much is left unknown about the details of locomotion mechanism. Researchers were looking for the optimal model of the neuronal system by trials and errors. In this paper, we applied Genetic Programming to induce the model of the nervous system automatically and showed its effectiveness by simulating a human bipedal walking with the obtained model.
