  • This paper investigates the capture of a 12U-sized CubeSat space object using a spider-web structure-based space net. The structural dynamics analysis program ABAQUS is used to simulate the shock-absorbing capability of the space net with a diagonal length of 2.828 m. The space object is modelled as a rigid body, and the space net is modelled using non-linear elastic beam elements. The simulations reveal that the spider-web structure-based space net outperforms the squared space net of the same structural weight in capturing the space object. The numerical simulations are conducted to examine the successful or unsuccessful captures of the space object in various cooperative and non-cooperative motions.

  • This study conducts capture simulations of space debris using a space-net. The present capture simulations are performed using ABAQUS, a nonlinear structural dynamics analysis code. A square space-net with 1 m × 1 m and a space debris with a cube configuration(0.3 m × 0.3 m × 0.3 m and 30 kg) are considered as baseline models. Using the baseline models, the capture simulation using ABAQUS is conducted to understand the capture process and establish the criteria of capture success or fail. In addition, the capture simulations are performed when various properties of the space-net are considered, and it is investigated that major design factors of the space-net are recognized to capture successfully the space debris.

  • Studies on the fabrication of UAV by using 3D printer have been actively carried out. However, research on structural load characteristics in low temperature environment is insufficient. In this study, a composite sandwich structure with ordinary orbs structure was proposed, and the load characteristics for temperature condition changes were analyzed. The ordinary orbs and honeycomb structures were fabricated by using a FDM type 3D printer. The bending load test was carried out at room temperature and low temperature condition. The low temperature condition was classified into four cases. Bending load tests were performed in a low temperature chamber to maintain the required temperature conditions. As a result of the test, it was confirmed that the proposed ordinary orbs structure had better load characteristics at low temperatures than the existing honeycomb structure.

  • This paper presents a spiral descending path and a landing guidance law for net-recovery of a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle. The net-recovery landing flight is divided into two phases. In the first phase, a spiral descending path is designed from an arbitrary initial position to a final approaching waypoint toward the recovery net. The flight path angle is controlled to be aligned to the approaching direction at the end of the spiral descent. In the second phase, the aircraft is guided from the approaching waypoint to the recovery net using a pseudo pursuit landing guidance law. Six degree-of-freedom simulation is performed to verify the performance of the proposed landing guidance law.

  • This research discusses the change in radio frequency (RF) characteristics according to the number of Gores on the deployable mesh antennas for potential micro-satellite applications. The deployable type of lightweight mesh antenna can be used for various space missions such as communication/SAR/ SIGINT. In order to implement an ideal curvature of antenna surface, sufficient number of antenna rib structures are required. However, the increase in antenna ribs affects various design factors of the antenna system, especially total system mass, complexity of deployable mechanism and reliability. In this paper, the proper number of ribs for the mesh antenna were derived by comparison of electro-magnetic (EM) simulation results of example of antenna model in accordance with the various number of ribs.
