Development of a Software for Re-Entry Prediction of Space Objects for Space Situational Awareness (우주상황인식을 위한 인공우주물체 추락 예측 소프트웨어 개발)

  • The high-level Space Situational Awareness (SSA) objective is to provide to the users dependable, accurate and timely information in order to support risk management on orbit and during re-entry and support safe and secure operation of space assets and related services. Therefore the risk assessment for the re-entry of space objects should be managed nationally. In this research, the Software for Re-Entry Prediction of space objects (SREP) was developed for national SSA system. In particular, the rate of change of the drag coefficient is estimated through a newly proposed Drag Scale Factor Estimation (DSFE), and is used for high-precision orbit propagator (HPOP) up to an altitude of 100 km to predict the re-entry time and position of the space object. The effectiveness of this re-entry prediction is shown through the re-entry time window and ground track of space objects falling in real events, Grace-1, Grace-2, Tiangong-1, and Chang Zheng-5B Rocket body. As a result, through analysis 12 hours before the final re-entry time, it is shown that the re-entry time window and crash time can be accurately predicted with an error of less than 20 minutes.

  • Situation awareness means recognizing everything necessary to understand progress in a flight or aircraft maintenance work. Situation awareness is based on more than simply recognizing important about the environment, and it is important to provide the meaning of information in an integrated form. The KHP provides the pilot with integrated situation display for an integrated form of situation awareness and warning that synchronizes the priority based audible signal with the visual signal. Provide integrated display and warning to reduce operator error and enable operators to focus on mission critical tasks and events. This paper introduces the integrated situation display and warning design implemented in the KHP.

  • Increase of space debris makes low earth orbit(LEO) environment more complex day by day and space situation Awareness(SSA) is becoming more important. As an essential part of SSA, space object surveillance and tracking is studied by many countries including America and Europe. And radar system forms the backbone of an space surveillance and tracking. Currently, Korea operates many LEO satellites like KOMPSAT but does not have dedicated radar systems which provide collision surveillance between satellite and space debris. Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) NARO space center operates launch-vehicle tracking radar system in GOHEUNG and JEJU, respectively. In this paper, we describe developing operation concept to track International Space Station(ISS) using NARO radar and results of tracking. Then, we describe ISS orbit determination using radar tracking data. Lastly, orbit determination result is compares with TLE for analyzing effectiveness of orbit determination.

  • 재난 상황이나 우주 공간과 같은 환경에서는 인간이 직접 작업을 수행하기가 매우 어렵다. 따라서 이러한 환경에서 인명 구조나 탐사 등을 진행할 때에는 원격으로 제어가능한 로봇을 활용하는 것이 효과적이다. 특히 이 로봇이 인간의 움직임을 실시간으로 모방한다면 직관적이고 순발력 있는 제어가 가능해진다. 본 연구에서는 키넥트 센서를 이용해 인간의 움직임을 인식하고 이 움직임을 모방하는 로봇핸드와 로봇암을 구현하였다. 하드웨어는 TETRIX와 EV3 플랫폼을 이용하여 설계하였고, 소프트웨어는 C# 기반의 KINECT for Windows SDK와 Visual Studio 2015로 구현하였다. 본 연구에서 구현한 시스템은 재난 현장에서의 인명 구조, 복구 상황에서와 우주 공간에서의 탐사 상황에서 유용하게 사용될 수 있을 것이다.

Dual-Mode Framework for Space Object Collision Risk Assessment (우주 물체 충돌 위험 분석을 위한 이중 모드 프레임워크)

  • Recently, the number of space objects around the Earth has increased rapidly, necessitating systematic space risk management. This paper proposes a dual-mode framework for assessing the risk of collision between space objects. The proposed framework consists of microscopic and macroscopic modes. The former focuses on one-to-one collision events, and the latter assesses the overall collision risk inside a cell located in space. Two risk assessment case studies using the proposed two modes demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

  • This paper includes the development and operational status of the space object collision risk management system operated by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. Currently, it monitors 6 low-orbit satellites and 3 geostationary satellites for collision risks 24 hours, enabling prompt collision avoidance maneuvers to ensure safe and stable operations. Since Chinese anti-satellite test (ASAT) in 2007, the monitoring of collision risks between space objects and operational satellites has been taken seriously, leading to the development of various collision risk management systems to respond quickly and efficiently to such situations. This paper provides an introduction to the space object collision risk management system developed from 2007 to the present, the current status of artificial space objects around Earth, and the system currently in operation. Additionally, it outlines future prospects and plans for the system.

A comparative study on the Air Traffic Controller's performance and cognitive imbalance (관제사 수행의 인지적 균형과 불균형의 관계고찰)

  • This paper describes generic cognitive aspects of the air traffic controller's performance and perceptive activities unveiled through the past literature study. which underlines mental modelling and mental picture presented in the middle of complicated situational awareness and decision making process when air traffic controller comes to determine the distance between aircraft under control to maintain air traffic in a safe, orderly and expeditious way. It also describes human limit in terms of human memory in conjunction with relative workloads and environmental factor. In conclusion, It suggest that ATC authority will take into account the qualitatiive adjustment of training requirement necessary for ATC facility rating and refresher training to allow them more preparedness for better situational awareness and optimal decision making. In this paper controller's behavioral activators affecting their job performance are addressed in perspective of aviation safety.

A Study on the Deep Neural Network based Recognition Model for Space Debris Vision Tracking System (심층신경망 기반 우주파편 영상 추적시스템 인식모델에 대한 연구)

  • It is essential to protect the national space assets and space environment safely as a space development country from the continuously increasing space debris. And Active Debris Removal(ADR) is the most active way to solve this problem. In this paper, we studied the Artificial Neural Network(ANN) for a stable recognition model of vision-based space debris tracking system. We obtained the simulated image of the space environment by the KARICAT which is the ground-based space debris clearing satellite testbed developed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, and created the vector which encodes structure and color-based features of each object after image segmentation by depth discontinuity. The Feature Vector consists of 3D surface area, principle vector of point cloud, 2D shape and color information. We designed artificial neural network model based on the separated Feature Vector. In order to improve the performance of the artificial neural network, the model is divided according to the categories of the input feature vectors, and the ensemble technique is applied to each model. As a result, we confirmed the performance improvement of recognition model by ensemble technique.

Investigation of Science Gifted Students' Value-Judgement and Decision Making Writing on Space Exploration Enterprise (과학영재들의 우주개발사업에 대한 가치판단과 의사결정 글쓰기 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the science gifted students' value-judgments and decision making writing on the space exploration enterprise. Sixty-four first graders of a gifted science school took the seminar-style decision making instruction for 10 hours in one month. After having the seminar-style decision making instruction, we have analyzed science gifted students' value-judgments and decision making process utilizing questionnaires and their writings. As a result, gifted students were aware of both sides of the space exploration enterprise, benefits and risks, and showed different decision making depending on their priorities of evidence interpretation. Although the majority of gifted students were very well aware of the importance of space exploration enterprise, they would still need to know the background information of space exploration enterprise. Based on this study, implications of SSI education and future research about space exploration enterprise were discussed in the result.
