  • This study aimed to examine the effects of rejection sensitivity on depression and anxiety, and the moderating effects of school violence victimization experiences on the relationships between rejection sensitivity and both anxiety and depression. Based on the results, we suggested a method of screening soldiers at high risk of depression and anxiety and interventions for their psychological adaptation. The data about anxiety, depression, rejection sensitivity, and school violence victimization experiences was collected from 126 airmen in S city, South Korea. To test the moderation effects, multiple regression analyses were conducted in which the rejection sensitivity, anxiety, school violence victimization experiences and their interaction terms were hierarchically entered. The moderation of school violence victimization experiences was found in the relationship between rejection sensitivity and school violence victimization experiences. The specific interaction patterns in each of these significant interaction effects were examined. Finally, the importance of school violence victimization experiences as a high-risk factor in army life and the clinical implication of these findings were discussed.

Especially the focus was on the differences in the degree of depression and the influencing factors on depression between those in early adulthood and those in middle adulthood The subjects consisted of 130 early adulthood housewives and 142 middled adulthood housewives. They asked to complete several self-report measures that were used to assess the variables of interest. The result indicated that the depression in housewives were serious enough to arouse social workers' attention. The average housewives were suffered from mild depression, and 17.1% of the housewives were in need of professional treatment. There was no significant difference in the degree of depression between the early adulthood housewives and the middle adulthood housewives. There were, however, differences in the factors which explain and predict the depression between these two groups. The results of step-wise multiple regression analysis indicated that the factors which predict the depression for the early adulthood housewives were self-esteem, conflict with the spouse, experience of painful events, age, and conflict with the children. On the other hand, the factors which predict the depression for the middle adulthood housewives were self-esteem, conflict with the spouse, job, and income. Implications of the findings for social work interventions were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of discrimination experienced by single-parent household heads and their children on their level of depression. As its sample, the study used data from 1,631 relevant respondents to the 2021 Single-Parent Family Status Survey conducted by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS, version 25.0, including descriptive statistics, difference verification, correlations, and regression analysis. First, general characteristics were classified as single-parent and family characteristics, health factors, and economic resources, and differences in depression were analyzed accordingly. Among the health factors, health status, frequency of exercise, and methods of alleviating depression were significant. Regarding economic resources, housing type and monthly household income were significant factors. Second, factors influencing the impact of discrimination experiences on depression were analyzed. The results indicated that among health factors, health status was significant. With regard to economic resources, monthly household income, discrimination experiences of household heads, discrimination experienced by children, and overall discrimination experiences were significant. No significant variables were identified among single-parent and family characteristic factors. Therefore, it was evident that health factors and economic resources, as well as discrimination experiences, are important variables that increase depression in single-parent household heads. Based on these findings, corresponding relevant alternatives were suggested.

Thirdly, income was significantly moderated the relationship between depression experience and suicidal behavior in relatively low income group below average income after controlling for mediating effects of health related quality of life. These results showed that there is a need to enhance health policy for mental health care in middle-aged women and to expand intervention program for improvement of health related quality of life, and especially, intervention for improving mental health of low-income group.

  • The aim of this study was to determine the association between the Body Mass Index (BMI), weight perception and depression-like symptoms in Korean middle school students. The data was obtained from the 2012 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. The subjects were 37,297 students living in the community. Adjusting for covariates (sex, school year, home economics, city-type, school record, self-reported happiness, self-reported health status, suicidal thinking, smoking, alcohol consumption), the self-reported obesity (OR=1.14, 95% CI: 1.06-1.22) and self-reported underweight (OR=1.11, 95% CI: 1.03-1.20), compared to the self-reported healthy weight, were more likely to have depression-like symptoms. On the other hand, the BMI-based weight was not associated independently with depression-like symptoms. These findings suggest that weight perception is significantly associated with depression-like symptoms.

  • The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of verbal violence experienced during clinical practice, emotional responses, academic stress coping, and depression on professional self-concepts of nursing students. Data were collected through a self-reported structured questionnaire form given to nursing students in grades 3-4 using convenient sampling methods from October 25 to November 1, 2017. As a result, 41.9% of the subjects experienced verbal violence during clinical practice. The frequency of experiences for verbal violence was '1 time' at 16.9%, '2 times' at 15.5%, and '3 times' at 4.7%. The verbal violence attackers were patients (42.9%), nurses (37.7%), and protector (15.5%). Emotional response was positively correlated with depression and frequency of verbal violence. Academic stress coping had a negative correlation with depression and a positive correlation with professional self-concept. Depression was negatively correlated with professional self-concept. Multiple regression analysis showed that academic stress coping and depression were statistically significant variables in the professional self-concept, and these variables had a 28% explanatory power. Therefore, in order to improve the professional self-concept of nursing students, it is necessary to develop a strategy to raise the level of academic stress coping and to reduce depression.
