  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between food intake pattern body component bone mineral density(BMD) and dental caries experience of college women and we wanted to determine the correlation of these factors with dental caries experience. Research was conducted to offer basic data to develope a nutritional program for the future prevention from oral disease. The subjects in this study were 132 college women who participated in the food intake survey and who's body component and BMD was measured. The statistical analysis was done by using the SPSS 15.0 program. The results of this study were as follows; 1. The food intake pattern was not directly correlated with DMFT index. 2. The body component was not directly correlated with DMFT index. 3. The SOS, BQI was directly correlated with DMFT index(p<0.05). 4. T-score of BMD had the greatest influence on DMFT index(p<0.05). Above results indicated that bone mineral density are related with the incidence of dental caries experience and further research is necessary to develop a nutritional and health promotional program in order to prevent oral illness.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine association between oral health status and perceived general health symptom. We analyzed 14,231 subjects who participated in Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007~2009). All individuals were examined by a questionnaire about socioeconomic history, smoking and drinking habit, the frequency of daily tooth brushing, the presence of regular dental visit, and EuroQol-5D. Dental survey was conducted to find the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index and community periodontal index. Subjects with perceived problem with mobility had higher DMFT index (odds ratio, 1.18, p<0.001). Subjects with with perceived problem with pain/discomfort had higher DMFT index (odds ratio, 1.16, p<0.001). Self-rating general health symptom was not associated with periodontitis (p>0.05). Perceived general health was associated with DMFT index. It is recommendable that we can use the perceived general health to predict oral health status.

  • The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between the malocclusion and dental caries in adolescents with permanent dentition. The subjects of the study were 385 adolescents aged 12 to 15 years. Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) and DMFT index were recorded as clinical indicators of malocclusion and dental caries. The mean Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) score of the subjects was 12.42 and the mean DMFT index of the subjects was 2.89. Four students (1.04%) were included in the group of orthodontic treatment mandatory, which signifies the handicapping malocclusion. Moreover, the result of gender-specific analysis of the DAI components observed that the prevalence of midline diastema and mandibular overjet were significantly higher among boys (p < 0.05). In 7 components (missing teeth, incisal segment crowding, maxillary anterior irregularity, mandibular anterior irregularity, mandibular overjet, anterior openbite, antero-posterior molar relationship) among the 10 DAI components, abnormal groups showed significantly higher DMFT index than normal groups (p < 0.05). The subjects in the group of definite to handicapping malocclusion (DAI ${\geq}$ 26) showed significantly higher DMFT index than the subjects in the group of minor or no malocclusion (p < 0.01). In addition, the DAI score had significant positive linear correlation with the DMFT index (r = 0.584, p < 0.01). Consequently, the current findings suggested a positive relationship between the malocclusion and caries prevalence. And several specific types of malocclusion were supposed to be significantly correlated with dental caries.

  • Since it is favorable to include the incipient caries lesion in the diagnostic criteria in adolescence, this study had surveyed dental caries status of adolescents at ages of 13 and 16 by using WHO basic methods and ICDAS-II codes. In this study, mean DMFT index was 3.71, and mean DT index was 1.94. For both indices, the age 16 group showed higher values than the age 13 group. By groups of teeth, DMFT index and DT index exhibited highest to the lowest values in molar, premolar, and anterior teeth, respectively. 77.46% of total numbers of teeth were classified as code 0 in ICDAS-II. Compared to anterior teeth, numbers of decayed teeth were increased in posterior teeth. All caries lesions in anterior teeth and premolars were limited to enamel. ICDAS-II code is an useful method to detect the incipient caries lesion, allowing preventive control on caries management.

  • The objective of this study was to examine whether there is an association of oral health conditions between mothers and their preschool children in Korea. A sample of 823 preschool children and their mothers were selected for this study from the database of the fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition examination Survey. Preschool children were defined as children aged 4, 5, and 6 years old. The subjects were clinically examined for the presence of caries lesions (dft index) and their mother was checked for the presence of dental caries (DMFT index) and periodontal status (CPI). The socio-demographic characteristics and mother's oral health behaviours were considered covariates in this study. Univariate and multivariate analysis was adapted to assess the association of oral health condition between mothers and their preschool children. In univariate analysis, there were significant differences between preschool children's dft index and their mother's age (p=0.005), dental treatment demand for the past one year (p=0.034), and DMFT index (p=0.016). In multivariate analysis, only mother's DMFT index was significantly associated with their children's dft index after adjusting for covariates. In conclusion, the mother's oral health was partly associated with their preschool children's oral health in Korea.
