  • This study aims to increase the transparency of the natural adhesives made with lacquer and glue. For the purpose, samples were prepared by mixing urushiol with glue in varied proportion and the characteristics and adhesive properties were investigated. By adding glue on urushiol, IR spectra of the natural adhesives became similar to that of glue as the N-H band related with protein of glue increased, while that of methylene C-H bond related to urushiol decreased. Samples were dried within a day and maintained a bright color without blackening by oxidation during the curing process. The natural adhesives with urushiol and glue showed various range of viscosity and tensile shear strength as Cemedine C or Epoxy resin according to mixing ratio. In addition, the sample of mixing ratio of 6:4 showed bright and transparency in appearance and tensile shear strength similar to that of Araldite AY103-1/HY956 for earthenware layer.

  • Active components of lacquer tree referred to as urushiol congeners, which are catechol derivatives with various alkyl or alkenyl substituents. The olefin side chains typically have one, two or three double bonds. In this study, the each congener's ratio analysis of extracts from korean lacquer tree are compared to the one from other asian lacquer tree. Extraction was performed using liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) method with soxhlet system from tree's bark and sap. Extracts were analyzed by reverse phase liquid chromatography and on-line electro spray ionization mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

  • Pacquer traditionally has been used to varnish. Many reports have revealed that lacquer has durability and antimicrobial activities. Therefore, we expect that lacquer will be used as a good antifouling agent to solve the environmental problem. Here we chemically synthesized urushiol, a major component in lacquer and two urushiol derivatives, urusiol regioisomer and cardanol. We also analyzed the antimicrobial activities of these molecules to examine the inhibitory effect on the formation of the biofilms. Our results showed that synthesized urushiol and its derivatives have strong antifungal activities. Urushiol also exhibited inhibitory effect on the growth of gram positive bacteria specifically. However urushiol derivatives have low antibacterial activities.

  • In Korea, for a long time Rhus verniciflua has traditionally been used as an herbal medicines plants. A stem of Rhus verniciflua has been used to treat gastrointestinal trouble with in form of boiled chicken as a folk medicine. But it has been recognized as an extremely active allergen causing skin reactions. The chief allergenic component, urushiol, is found within the oleoresinous sap of Rhus verniciflua. Most components of urushiol have unsaturated side chains. These unsaturated side chains of urushiol are important to polymerization of these natural products. The urushiol components in Korean lacquer were isolated by reversed phase HPLC. The molecular weight of purified urushiol was determined as 340 from mass analysis. This compound was identified as Heptadecatetraenyl catechol (MW 340).

  • Urushiol extracted from lacquer tree exhibits good thermal stabilities as well as antimicrobial andantioxidant properties. However, it has been known that the urushiol derivates bring out allergy. In this study, polyurushiol (PUOH) powders were successfully synthesized for the safe and convenient handling of allergic urushiol. First, the as-synthesized PUOH was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA), antioxidant test and antimicrobial test. And then, six different LDPE/PUOH composite films were prepared via a twin screw extruder system and investigated their feasibility to use as active packaging materials. Their chemical structures, morphology, thermal optical and antimicrobial properties of the LDPE/PUOH composite films were investigated as a function of PUOH contents. FTIR and SEM results showed that LDPE/PUOH composite films have a weak interfacial interaction and poor dispersion with a high PUOH loading. The thermal properties increased up to 3 wt% as the content of PUOH increases. Compared to the pure LDPE films, LDPE/PUOH composite films are more effective in the UV absorbance and antibacterial activity against E. coli. To maximize the performance of LDPE/PUOH compositefilms as the packaging materials, further researches are required to enhance the dispersion of PUOH powders in the LDPE matrix.

  • When percentages of the component of raw lacquer were changed by adding each components that is urushiol, polysaccharide and glycoprotein, the physical properties of refined lacquer were changed and the period of refining also were changed. When polysaccharide component extracted from raw lacquer was added in raw lacquer, the period of refining was shortened about 1/3 times and this refined lacquer film was dried faster than the refined lacquer which was not added any other components. When urushiol extracted from raw lacquer was added in raw lacquer, the transparency of dried film was improved. A case of Guizhoushang was improved of the tensile strength of dried film. When both urushiol and polysaccharide were added in raw lacquer, the drying time of refined lacquer was shortened and the tensile strength of them also was improved.

  • Lacquer sap extracted from lacquer trees exhibits good thermal stabilities and antimicrobial properties. To apply these superior properties to functional packaging, polyurushiol (YPUOH) powders were prepared and blended into LDPE (low density polyethylene) to prepare three different LDPE/YPUOH composite films via a twin screw extruder system. Their morphology, thermal and antimicrobial properties as well as barrier properties of the LDPE/YPUOH composite films were thoroughly investigated to find out applicablities of the films as functional packaging materials. Although the interfacial interaction between LDPE and YPUOH was relatively weak, LDPE/YPUOH composite films exhibited good dispersion of YPUOH in LDPE, resulting in the enhanced thermal stability with YPUOH loading. Due to the good antibacterial property of as-prepared YPUOH, LDPE/YUOH composite films also showed an excellent antibacterial activity (R) of 99.9% against E. coli. Furthermore, the moisture barrier property of LDPE/YPUOH composite films increased with increasing YPUOH contents. Incorporating the relatively low amount of YPUOH in LDPE resulted in the apparent enhancement in thermal stabilities, antibacterial and moisture barrier properties, which made them promising candidates as a functional filler for packaging materials.

  • Asian lacquer has been used as an adhesive and coating material in Asian countries, such as China, Japan, and Korea, and other southeast Asian countries. In this study, the changes in the chemical structure of lacquer with drying was analyzed using pyrolysis/GC/MS (which is useful in analyzing polymeric material) to understand its drying procedures. Upon increasing temperature, the dried lacquer was fully pyrolyzed above the pyrolysis temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. The repeatability was good at the pyrolysis temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ (rsd = 2.6-22.3 %); however, there were differences in the pyrogram patterns when the difference in sample quantity was large. The characteristic peaks of Asian lacquer components, such as those corresponding to 1,2-benzenediol and 3-methyl-1,2-benzenediol, were detected and the compound of each peak was assigned according to the mass library. As the lacquer dried, the composition of pyrolysis products with urushiol derivatives bearing 3 C=C bonds was severely reduced compared with the ones with no C=C bonds, indicating that the polymerization is related to C=C bonds. These results can be applied to confirm the presence of lacquer in excavated relics and to monitor the changes in the composition of raw lacquer with drying.

  • In order to examine the constituents and weathered state of a lacquer specimen, analysis of the organic materials was conducted using py/GC/MS(pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry). The samples were obtained from the lacquered wooden sheath of a long ring-pommel sword excavated in the Imdang No.1 ancient tomb constructed around the Proto-Three Kingdoms period. In direct py/GC/MS, the sample and the dried Asian lacquer showed similar chromatograms, while the characteristic compounds of Asian lacquer such as 1,2-dimethoxy-3-pentadecylbenzene were observed in THM(thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation)-py/GC/MS. In addition, compounds like dimethyl nonanedioate, which presumably originated from drying oil, were also detected. Furthermore, the detection of oxidized catechols in considerable amount indicated that the degradation of lacquer is estimated to result from the oxidation of urushiol. Therefore, it is suggested that the lacquered wooden sheath was prepared using Asian lacquer and drying oil, and that the lacquer layer was considerably oxidized over the long burial time.
