  • In this study, the descriptions of salt solubility in the textbooks of secondary school and college were reviewed to figure out the reason of low understanding of elementary and secondary school students and teachers about the solubility of a salt in the presence of other ions. The ionic strength dependence of salt solubility was not introduced in the secondary school textbooks and general chemistry textbooks. It appeared in the physical chemistry textbooks as a direct or an indirect explanation. However, most of college senior students who had learned the physical chemistry could not relate the salt solubility with the ionic strength change. The factors might affect salt solubility, such as the ion pair formation and the activity coefficient change by ionic strength, were mentioned and an experimental result was also shown to resolve the questions that college students and teachers might have. Because these explanations are beyond the secondary school level, we need to develope an easier and better explanation suitable for the secondary school students.

  • This study was to examine middle school students' understanding of dissolution. More than 75% students understood that dissolution was caused by small particles' filling the space between large particles due to the difference of size among particles. Some other students responded that solute disappeared or was absorbed in a solvent as the result of dissolution. Besides, they didn't know that space between particles was the reason of the volume's decreasing after the process of dissolution. Instead, they explained that space between particles caused dissolution. And they hardly understood the fact that solutes affect solubility. Students'misunderstanding about the concept of dissolution resulted from the lack of the explanation on the right concept of dissolution in science textbooks and the inappropriate use of the dissolution model by teachers. In conclusion, we need the appropriate explanation in middle school science textbooks that consider the students'level and the development of the appropriate model that demonstrates dissolution in the perspective of particles.

  • Oils and chlorinated solvents leaking to the subsurface are entrapped in the soil pore and these are called as nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPL). NAPL entrapped in porous media acts as a continuous source for surface and ground water contamination. This study visualized dissolution of trichloroethylene (TCE) entrapped in porous media and quantified the velocity of TCE dissolution using an image analysis technique. As the water velocity increased, the level of dissolution increased. The results imply that a TCE contaminated region having a high infiltration rate and groundwater velocity may result in severe groundwater contamination. Microscopic images of TCE entrapped in porous media showed that TCE present in the preferential flow paths was easily dissoluted into the water phase. However, TCE present in the stagnant flow region was visualized for long time. The results imply that TCE would be still present in the soil if TCE is detected in goundwater.

  • Effect of deamidation with Neutrase on the solubility of bovin serum albumin(BSA), egg albumin(EA), soy protein isolate(SPI) was investigated. Solubility of deamidated BSA in distilled water was decreased from 98% to 83% against native BSA at pH 4~8, minimum solubility of deamidated BSA was pH 6. Solubilities of native BSA and deamidated BSA in 0.2M NaCl solution were shown 100% as compared greately decreasing both solubilities in 1.0M NaCl at acidic pH. According to deamidation, solubility of EA in distilled water was increased below pH 4 and above pH 6, while solubility of EA in NaCl solution was decreased by deamidation at acidic pH. Solubility of SPI in distilled water was greately increased by deamidation at overall pH, deamidation was increased solubility in NaCl solution above pH 5. There was, however, no difference on solubility by deamidation below pH 5.

  • Fate and transport of hydrophobic organic contaminants can be influenced by naturally-existing humic substances and surfactants applied to wash polluted soils in the subsurface environment. The objective of this paper is to study the solubility enhancement of four PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) and p,p'-DDT in humic acid and surfactant solutions. As the number of aromatic ring is increased, the extent of solubility enhancement of PAHs by humic acid increased. Although the hydrophobicity of p,p'-DDT was the largest among five organic compounds used, the extent of solubility enhancement of p,p'-DDT by humic acid was lower than that of pyrene. In case of anionic surfactants, the extent of the increased solubility of five organic compounds by SDS and SDDBS was increased linearly, but the extent of the increased solubility of p,p'-DDT by MADS-12 was lower than that of perylene.

  • Solubility data of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (PEGDME) are presented at pressures up to about 50 bar and at temperatures between 303 K and 343 K. The solubilities of $CO_2$ were determined by measuring the bubble point pressures of the $CO_2+PEGDME$ mixtures with various compositions using a high-pressure equilibrium apparatus equipped with a variable-volume view cell. To observe the effect of the PEGDME molecular weight on the $CO_2$ solubility, the $CO_2$ solubilities in PEGDME with two kinds of molecular weight were compared. As the equilibrium pressure increased, the $CO_2$ solubility in PEGDME increased. On the other hand, the $CO_2$ solubility decreased with increasing temperature. When compared at the same temperature and pressure, the PEGDME with a higher molecular weight gave smaller $CO_2$ solubility on a mass fraction and molality basis, but gave greater $CO_2$ solubilities on a mole fraction basis.

  • Time-dependent behavior similar to secondary deformation related to mineral dissolution is easily observed when performing a laboratory pressure experiment. In this research, to observe the dissolution of quartz found in bentonite used as buffer material for the geological disposal of high-level waste (HLW) under conditions of high pH, we calculated the diffusion of $OH^-$ ions and the behavior of quartz dissolution using the homogenization analysis method. The results reveal that the rate of quartz dissolution is proportional to the temperature and interlayer water thickness. In particular, in a high-pH environment, the reacted area (and therefore the dissolution rate) increases with decreasing interlayer water thickness.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of organic acids on solubility of calcium. As a results, acetic and lactic acid showed the most excellent solubility of calcium. Calcium solubility was increased at initial total acid (4%) in citric acid but calcium was insoluble in tartaric acid. After solving, pH and residuals were decreased where as total acidity and calcium content were increased as increment of initial acidity of acetic and lactic acid. Calcium content in seaweed calcium and calcium carbonate were higher than that of nano calcium. Solubility of calcium was more conspicuous at lactic acid than acetic acid.

  • Water-soluble phosphate glasses containing Ag and Cu ion were prepared through melting process. Dis-solution characteristics, bactericidal effect and cytotoxicity were investigated with composition and time in D. I. water using the powdered sample. Surface change were observed with increasing dissolution time us-ing the bulk specimen. Dissolution amount was maximum at the molar Ag:Cu ratio of 1 and increased with increasing time. The behavior of dissolution was total dissolution from the early stage. But no new layer was observed at the glass surface during dissolution. The bactericidal effect for pseudomonas sp, e. coli, sta-phylococcus aureus, and salmonella increased with increasing dissolution amount and therefore great bac-tericidal effect appeared. The result of cytotoxicity experiment to L929 showed that solution with more than 10 ppm of Ag ion had strong cytotoxicity.
