A Study on the Properties of Underwater Wet Arc Welding for the Mild Steels (연강의 습식 수중 아크 용접 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Underwater wet arc welds were experimentally performed on 11mm thick SS400 mild steel plate as base metal by using six different types of flux coated electrodes of 4.0mm diameter; KSKR, KSKT, USBL, JPUW, UWEA, and UWEB. As results, the developed flux coated underwater electrode had a good weldability compared with other domestic terrestrial electrodes. By rapid cooling rate, the hardness value of HAZ were increased by quenching effects. Mechanical properties for the multi-pass butt-welding specimen are also tested experimentally. The feasibility of the developed underwater electrode was experimentally studied and the results achieved in this wet arc welds have shown that the developed wet welding electrode UWEB can have a degree of integrity.

An Electrochemical Evaluation on Corrosion Properties of Welding Zone of Stainless Steel by GTAW (GTAW에 의한 스테인리스강 용접부위의 부식특성에 관한 전기화학적 평가)

  • GTAW was carried out to the austenitic 304(STS 304) and 22 APU stainless steels. In this case, difference of the corrosion characteristics of welded zone with STS 304 and 22APU mentioned above was investigated with electrochemical methods. Vickers hardness of weld metal in case of STS 304 (Hv-250) showed a relatively higher value than this of 22 APU(Hv-217). The corrosion current densities of weld metal of 22APU and heat affected zone of STS 304 were observed at the highest value compared to those of other welding zone respectively. This is probably because chromium depletion field due to chromium carbide formed to weld metal of 22APU and to heat affected zone of STS 304 can preferentially easily be corroded with more active anode than other fields. Consequently it is thought that application of the other welding methods like as laser welding or using of the optimum filler metals is necessary to improve the corrosion resistance of welding parts of these steels.

  • The root joint in the welding structures are apt to failure by the stress concentration which is occurred by the external force. Therefore, in the safety and reliability of structure, the complete penetration joint welding which are obtained by the groove welding with edge preparation is generally required. Nevertheless, fillet T-joint welding without edge preparation is often carried out in the fields to reduce working time and consumption of welding electrode, however, this process is likely to produce inadequate joint penetration such as root gap. In this paper, the focus of research is to investigate distribution of welding residual stresses in the plate(or flange) and web of T-joint weld, and especially in the near of root gap notch that is due to incomplete joint penetration. For the analysis, we have chosen model of T-joint weld in the cases of single and multi-pass welding with submerged arc welding and analyzed model by using finite element programs considering the heat conduction and thermal elasto-plastic theory.

  • The hydraulic or pneumatic valve spools become essential as the important components on the production of automatic hydraulic or pneumatic as mechanical industry has been rapidly developed. The machining precision is in necessity for manufacturing the valve spools. They could be unstable in the quality by the conventional are welding. And also they have a lot of technical problems in manufacturing because their shapes are generally small. By the precision casting process such as lost wax process, the production cost may be increased. But by the friction welding technique, they will be able to be manufactured without such problems. This paper deals with the development of dissimilar friction welding optimization for the hydraulic or pneumatic valve spool by friction welding and a new approach of on real-time qualify evaluation by AE techniques.

A Study on the Mechanical Properties of Underwater Wet Arc Welds using the SM41 (선체용 압연강판에 대한 습식 수중 아크용접부의 기계적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Underwater wet arc welds of rolled steel plate (SM41) where studied welding and mechanical properties macro and narrow than that of the other things. Tensile strength of UWEB obtained to 521.5 MPa and of USBL was 524.1 MPa, but the highest elongation value was 4.68 %(UWEB). Bending strength(1166.6 MPa) of USBL is the largest and of UWEB in 1047 MPa, But deflection(22.73 mm) of UWEB in large than that of USBL(22.63 mm). Impact value(144.36 $J/cm^2$) of JPUW is the largest and of UWEB(140 $J/cm^2$) come after.

  • Characteristics of the weld defect, such as a blowhole and a pit in lap-jointed fillet Co₂ welds of Zn-coated steel sheet were studied in order to make clear the sequence of the blowhole formation during welding. Main conclusions obtained are as follows: 1) Blowhole, wormhole and pit were found in fillet welds, although the optimum welding condition of 200A-23V-100cm/min was applied. 2) Zn was only detected at the solidification boundary at the early stage of the blowhole formation. 3) Most of the blowholes was started to form at lap-joint by the Zn vapor. With increasing of the Zn vapor and its pressure, the blowhole was develope to th bed surface until the completion of weld solidification. 4) The behavior of the blowhole in growth was similar to that of the columnar dendrite during welding.

Effects of Hybria Welding Parameters on the Toughness of Weld Metal in Ship Structural Steel (조선용강재의 레이저-아크 하이브리드 용접금속부 충격인성에 미치는 용접변수의 영향)

  • Since the 1990's, European shipbuilding industries introduced hybrid welding process in order to decrease thermal distortion of welded joints in passenger shipbuilding. In this study, we investigated effects of hybrid welding parameters on the toughness of weld metal using DH36 steel in order to obtain more sound welds in passenger shipbuilding. Type of leading process, joint gap distance and chemical composition of consumables were considerably correlated with the toughness of weld metal. Especially, the toughness was considerably increased with high-Ti containing consumables. In addition, hybrid welding speed increased by using plasma cut edges, the oxides layer of which increased absorption efficiency of laser beam.
