Antimicrobial and antitumor activities of Camellia sinensis L seed extracts were investigated. Seed extracts showed antifungal activities against Candida albicans IFO 1594 and Cryptococcus neoformans. Inhibition zone of 20 mm was shown by 70% ethanol extract against C. albicans IFO 1594 at 100 mg/mL. Antifungal activity of seed extract was not decreased by heating at 80 and $100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min or at $121^{\circ}C$ for 15 min, indicating heat-stability of seed component. Growth-inhibitory effects were observed in 70 and 10% of tumor cell line SK-OV-3 and normal ceil line NIH/3T3 at $50{\mu}g/mL$, respectively.

Prevention of postprandial hyperglycemia is important, as it is implicated in the development of macro- and microvascular complications associated with diabetes. An inhibitor of ${\alpha}$-amylase which acts in the first step of carbohydrate digestion, is expected to be a suppressor of postprandial hyperglycemia. This study investigated the porcine pancreatic ${\alpha}$-amylase inhibitory activity of the extracts from buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) flower, leaf, stem and grain. Flower, leaf, stem and grain of buckwheat were extracted by water and ethanol (40%, 70%, 100%), respectively. Flower and leaf extracts were more effective ${\alpha}$-amylase inhibitors than stem and grain extracts in all tested solutions. Ethanol extracts were more effective than water extracts or powders on the ${\alpha}$-amylase inhibitory activities. At concentrations of $0.5%{\sim}10%$ (w/w, starch basis), the flower extracts of 40%, 70% and 100% ethanol lowered the enzyme activity by about 90% and the results were similar to the values of acarbose. At the same concentrations, the leaf extracts of 100% ethanol lowered the enzyme activity by about 90%. These results suggest that buckwheat flower and leaf ethanol extracts may delay carbohydrate digestion and lower postprandial hyperglycemia.

The present study describes the cytotoxic effect of Artemisia fukudo extracts. The extract from A. fukudo by 80% ethanol was fractionated with n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethylacetate, and butanol in serial. The cytotoxicity of A. fukudo extracts was examined for its effect on the growth of HL-60 cells by the colorimetric 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. In addition, we used the HL-60 cells to see what effects the A. fukudo extracts will have on apoptosis of cancer cells. We checked the cell activity, cell morphologic changes, DNA fragmentation, and DNA content after 24 hr incubation with administering 25 ${\mu}g/mL$ of the A. fukudo extracts. In the treatment of the low concentration of n-hexane and dichloromethane fractions, the survival rate of HL-60 cells is lower than that of the control. The laddering-pattern DNA fragmentation was observed in the treatment with n-hexane and dichloromethane fractions. The DNA content of the cells apoptosis measured as the density of sub-$G_{1}$ hypodiploid cells by flow cytometric analysis. The number of sub-$G_{1}$ hypodiploid cells increased in the treatment with n-hexane and dichloromethane fractions. These fractions obstructed the cell cohesion and caused the blebbing of the cell membrane and fragmentation of the nucleus, both of which are symptoms of apoptosis. These results suggest that A. fukudo has a great potential value as food additives, medicinal supplements for patients with chronic diseases, and preventive measures against cancer.
Nanosize YIG powders added by Cerium which is exellent element in magneto-optical effect were synthesized by Sol-Gel method using Ethylene Glycol solvent. In 120 to 150 minute reaction time, stable sol solution which showed no change in viscosity, pH, and aging time was obtained. Monolithic YIG was synthesized at 80$0^{\circ}C$ with DTA and XRD measurement and its lattice parameter had a tendency to increase from 12.3921 $\AA$. Increasing annealing temperature from 80$0^{\circ}C$ to 105$0^{\circ}C$, average particle size was in the range of 40 nm to 330 nm. Saturation magnetization (M$_{s}$) value was increased from 18.37 to 21.25 emu/g due to enhancement of YIG crystallity and decreasing of orthoferrite phase. On the other hand, coercivity (H$_{c}$) value increased up to 90$0^{\circ}C$ and then decreased above 90$0^{\circ}C$. With increasing Ce addition, coercivity was almost not changed but saturation magnetization value was maximum at Ce 0.1 mol% and then decreased because of increasing a orthoferrite amount. Also, curie temperature (T$_{c}$) of YIG were not changed with Ce addition.ion.
Cigarette smoke causes atypical structure of pulmonary (cell structural) and oxidative damage. Therefore, we carried out to determine if exposure to cigarette smoke alters pulmonary structure and anti-oxidant related enzyme in a ICR mice model, when natural product extracts using by manual sprayer. The mice were divided into five groups, control group, sham-treated group (Sham), natural product extracts-treated group (NPE), natural product extracts-treated with smoke-exposed group (NPE-SM) and smoke-exposed (SM) group. All groups are similar to control group in weight, but SM group is lower than the other groups. Microscopic image of the pulmonary structure in SM group showed deleterious alterations in the morphology, but the other groups are maintained in original structure. In anti-oxidant related enzyme, SOD (superoxide dismutase) and catalase, SM group represents the lowest enzyme activity among all groups. These results indicate that the natural product extracts is an efficient tissue protective agent against smoke-induced lung injury.
The complex formation of anti-inflamatory drug piroxicam (PX, 4-hydroxy-2-methyl-N-2--pridyl-2H-1,2-benzothiazine-3-carboxadiamide-1,1-dioxide) with transition metal ions Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) in methanol(MeOH)/water binary mixtures were studied by spectrophotometric method at 25$^{\circ}C$, constant pH = 5.0 and I = 0.1 M. The computer program SQUAD was used to extract the desired information from the spectral data. The outputs of the fitting processes were stability constants, standard deviations of the estimated stability constants, concentration distribution diagrams and spectral profiles of all species. The sequence of the stability constants of PX complexes with Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) follow the Cu(II) > Co(II) > Ni(II) ${\approx}$ Zn(II) order. This may be due to different geometry tendencies of these metal ions. The acidity constants of the PX were also determined under above condition from its absorption spectra at different pH values. The computer program DATAN was used for determination of acidity constants of PX. The validity of the obtained acidity constants was checked by a well known computer program SPECFIT/32. The effects of the different parameters like solvent nature, cations characteristics on the stability and acidity constants were thoroughly discussed.
Succinic acid is an important precursor in industries producing biopolymers, pharmaceutical and food additives and green solvents. However, due to the high price of petroleum and the global $CO_2$ emission, the biological production of succinic acid from renewable biomass is a novel process due to the fixation of $CO_2$ into succinate during fermentation. In this study, aqueous two phase systems based on imidazolium ionic liquids/$K_2HPO_4$ were used as an effective separation and concentration process for succinic acid. Experimental results show that aqueous two phase systems can be formed by adding appropriate amount of imidazolium ionic liquids to aqueous $K_2HPO_4$ solutions in the presence of succinic acid. It can be found that the ability of imidazolium ionic liquids for phase separation followed the order [HMIm][Br]${\fallingdotseq}$[OMIm][Br]>[BMIm][Br]>[EMIm][Br]. The maximum value of extraction efficiency for succinic acid was about 90% and the amount of coextracted water into top phase is proportional to the chain length of cation in imidazolium ionic liquids. It was concluded that the aqueous two phase systems composed of imidazolium ionic liquids/$K_2HPO_4$ was effective for the selective extraction and concentration of succinic acid.
To determine the properties for juice preperation of Black Omija (Schizandra nigra Max.) and Omija (Schizandra chinensis), yield of extraction, chromaticity and lightness, pH and soluble solid of the extract were investigated. The rate of extract yield from Schizandra nigra was highest when extracted for 3 hours at 80$^{\circ}C$ in 20% ethanol solution. For the desirable chromaticity coordinates, the optimum extraction time and temperature of Schizandra nigra extract were 3 hours at 80$^{\circ}C$. The lightness of the extract was low of the value when extraction time and temperature was long and high. The sugar content of the extract of S. nigra was 2.02.6% Brix, lower than that of S. chinensis, but the difference was insignificant. The pH of the extract from S. nigra was 0.10.2 higher than that of S. chinensis. Although the pH of the extract from S. nigra was a little low when extracted by water, the pH range was enough to maintain the stability of color of extract from the S. chinensis.
This study was carried out to determine the inhibitory effects of solvent extracts from Sargassum hemiphyllum on growth of cancer cell lines (AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma and HT-29 human colon cancer cells) and production of lipid peroxides. Inhibitory effects of acetone with methylene chloride extract from S. hemiphyllum on the growth of AGS and HT-29 cancer cells were increased as dose dependent patterns (p<0.05). The methanol extract was more effective on inhibition of growth of AGS. The treatments of hexane, 85% aq. methanol, butanol and water fractions significantly inhibited the growth of cancer cells (p<0.05) and the inhibitory effect was stronger in HT-29. In DCFH-DA (dichlorodihydrofluorescin diacetate) assay, acetone with methylene chloride and methanol extracts showed a stronger inhibitory effect on the production of cellular lipid peroxides (p<0.05) compared with the butanol and hexane fractions. These results indicate that the consumption of S. hemiphyllum may be recommended as a potent functional food for preventing cellular oxidation and cancer.
