  • Lipases are well known as the enzymes which catalyze the hydrolysis of ester bonds combining aliphatic chains and glycerol on mono-, di- and triglycerides. Their reactions are characterized by be-ing heterogeneous and catalyzing the water-insoluble substrates. This property has been one of the Hurdles which delayed the application of lipases in fats and oils industry, However, with the development of biological reaction system of which organic solvent is introduced in part or whole as the reaction media, enzymatic manipulation of fats and oils is attracting increasing attention from the academic and industrial sectors. Trials in two-phase system and reversed micellar system to produce fatty acids through enzymatic hydrolysis of triglycerides preyed to be efficient in respect to volumetric productivity, fat hydrolysis rate, product separation, etc. In organic solvent system lipases have been found to have the ability to catalyze aminolysis, transesterification, esterification, thiotransesterification and oximolysis that are virtually impossible to catalyze in water. The organic solvent system is being extensively used in interesterifying glycerides to produce a fat with the modified physical and chemical nature.

  • Solid electrolyte interface is formed on a carbon electrode used as an anode in Li-ion battery, which can be of $Li^{+}$ intercalation/deintercalation during the first cycle. The passivation film formed by a solvent decomposition during the initial charge process affects cell performance and it was one of the main reason of an initial irreversible capacity. This paper describes the use, for the first time, of $Li_2CO_3$ as the additive for the formation of a passivation film on the carbon surface to suppress the initial irreversible reaction. Chronopotentiometry, cyclic voltammetry, and impedance spectroscopy were used to investigate the effects of the $Li_{2}CO_{3}$ additive. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, and X-ray diffraction were also used to monitor changes in the surface morphology and composition of the passivation film formed by solvent decomposition and the precipitation of $Li_{2}CO_{3}$. The addition of $Li_{2}CO_{3}$ to a solution of 1 M $LiPF_{6}$/EC:MA (1:3, v/v) resulted in a decrease in the initial irreversible capacity and it was due to the suppression of the solvent decomposition on the electrode surface.

  • Acanthopanax senticosus is a common Asian herb also known as "Siberian Ginseng". It is often used as a traditional herbal medicine for reducing damage in the liver, kidney, bone and muscle. In the present study we investigated the ferric reducing/antioxidant power and total phenolic contents of the ethanol-/water-extracts obtained from the stems and leaves of Acanthopanax senticosus. Osteoblast cellular proliferation was evaluated using the MTT and alkaline phosphatase activity assays in the human osteoblast-like MG-63 cell line. Acanthopanax senticosus extracts exerted remarkable ferric reducing/antioxidant power and contained high amount of phenolics. Among the extracts the stem-/ethanol-extract showed the highest antioxidant activity and total phenol content. Interestingly a highly positive correlation was found between antioxidant activity and total phenol content (p < 0.01). Proliferation of MG-63 osteoblast cells was highest in the stem-/ethanol-extract and alkaline phosphatase activity significantly increased in the water-extract of the stems (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that Acanthopanax senticosus extracts have antioxidant activity for preventing oxidative stress-related diseases and may have beneficial effects on bone health through the proliferation of osteoblast cells.

  • Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize extraction conditions preserving valuable functional properties of fluid Cheonggukjang obtained from red ginseng. Based on a central composite design, the study plan was established using variations in microwave power, ethanol concentration, and extraction time. Regression analysis was applied to obtain a mathematical model. A maximum electron donating ability (EDA) of 99.09% was obtained under the specific extraction conditions of microwave power 135.62 W, ratio of solvent to sample contents. 3.60 g/mL, and an extraction time of 11.79 min. The maximum inhibitory effect on tyrosinase activity was 10.02% at 119.16 W, 4.02 g/mL, and 5.57 min. The maximum superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity was 63.83% under the extraction conditions of 125.29 W, 4.04 g/mL, and 11.02 min. Based on superposition of four-dimensional RSM data obtained to optimize electron donating ability, nitrite-scavenging ability, inhibitory effect on tyrosinase activity, and SOD-like activity, the optimum ranges of extraction conditions were found to be a microwave power of $l{\sim}85 W$, a ratio of solvent to sample content of $1.4{\sim}2.8\;g/mL$, and an extraction time of $6.5{\sim}11\;min$.

  • To isolate new antioxidants from twelve edible seaweeds, mixed methanol and chloroform extract of marine algae was fractionated into several subfractions and their antioxidant activities were measured by using AOM and 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Especially the aqueous-methanol soluble fractions of brown and red algae showed a considerable antioxidant effect. Their antioxidant activities were stronger than synthetic antioxidants such as BHA, BHT, under the same concentration. Further fractionation of the aqueous-methanol soluble fractions using silica gel column chromatography yielded five subfractions. Among them methanol fraction exhibited high DPPH quenching activities. Also, it was confirmed to be benzene-derivative substances of two compounds by UV, HPLC, GC/MS analysis. Its each molecular weight was about 181, 238. These results suggested the existence of two effective natural antioxidant compounds in three edible marine algae.

  • $Bi_2MoO_6$ catalysts were successfully synthesized using ethylene glycol monomethyl ether (EGME), glycerol (GL), ethylene glycol (EG), and water as solvents by a conventional hydrothermal method. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by XRD, DRS, BET, SEM, and PL, and we also investigated the photocatalytic activity of these materials for the decomposition of Rhodamin B under visible light irradiation. The XRD results revealed the successful synthesis of 12-18 nm, well-crystallized ${\gamma}-Bi_2MoO_6$ crystals with an Aurivillius structure regardless of solvent. In addition, the $Bi_2MoO_6$ catalysts prepared below $140^{\circ}C$ showed an amorphous phase; however, those prepared above $160^{\circ}C$ showed well-crystallized ${\gamma}-Bi_2MoO_6$ crystals. All the catalysts have a similar absorption spectrum from the ultraviolet region up to the visible region less than 470 nm. This result suggests that all the $Bi_2MoO_6$ catalysts are potential visible-light-driven photocatalysts. The $Bi_2MoO_6$ catalysts prepared using EGME as a solvent showed the highest photocatalytic activity. In addition, the $Bi_2MoO_6$ catalysts prepared at $180^{\circ}C$ showed the highest photocatalytic activity. The PL peaks appeared at about 560 nm at all catalysts and the excitonic PL signal was proportional to the photocatalytic activity for the decomposition of Rhodamin B. This suggests that the stronger the PL intensity, the larger the amount of oxygen vacancies and defects, and the higher the photocatalytic activity.

  • We examined the culture conditions and degrading characteristics of styrene dimer (endocrine disrupter) using microorganism. The isolated microbe were consisted of 3 kinds of strain. The strains were identified to Pseudomonas sp. and Klebsiella pneumoniae by API 20E kit, but one was not identified. Single strain was not grown on the C-medium containing styrene dimer. However the complex strain YH3 could grow and we confirmed it by the broth color and O.D$_{660nm}$ (optical density 660 nm). The optimal culture conditions of complex strain YH3 were 35$^{\circ}C$, 1,000 ppm (v/v) of styrene dimer and pH 7.0, respectively. In tolerance test against the organic solvents, the complex strain YH3 could grow above log P=3.1, and could degrade ethyl benzene and 2,4-D, one kind of herbicide. As a result of TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography) analysis, we confirmed that the metabolite of styrene dimer was created by YH3 after 5th day, but not at control samples.

  • Polyamic acids, precursor polymers of polyimides have been obtained by the solution polycondensation of benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) with 4, 4'-diamino diphenyl methane (MDA) and/or 3, 3'-dimethyl benzidine (OTB). The reaction was carried in two solvent systems such as m-cresol and m-cresol/xylene mixture. The results of TGA analysis showed that the polyimide films had good thermal stability with the initial decomposition temperature ranging from $540^{\circ}$ to $590^{\circ}$. According to DSC analysis of polymers, the glass transition temperature was over $340^{\circ}$. Polyimide film samples, showed good mechanical and electrical properties, had over $16Kg/mm^2$ of tensile strength and about 200 KV/mm of dielectric breakdown voltage. The properties of the copolymer from MAD/OTB were better than those of the homopolymer from MDA. And the polymer synthesized in m-cresol had lower properties than that obtained in m-cresol/xylene.

  • The rate constants for the solvolysis reactions of p-chlorobenzyl chloride in ethanol-water mixtures were determinded at 30${\circ}\;and\;40{\circ}$C up to 1,600bar. Rates of reaction were increased with increasing temperature and pressure, and decreased with increasing solvent composition of ethanol mole fraction. The plots of ln k against pressure are fitted to a second-order function in P, and values of ${\Delta}V^{\neq}\;and\;${\Delta}{\beta}^{\neq}$ are obtained. The values of ${\Delta}V^{\neq}\;and\;${\Delta}{\beta}^{\neq}$ extremum behavior at about 0.20 mole fraction of ethanol. This behavior is discussed in terms of solvent structure variation. From the relation between the plots of ln k versus the solvent parameter, q ≡ (D-1)/(2D+1), or the logarithmic molar water concentration, In $C_w$, it could be estimated that the reaction proceeds through $S_N1(2)$ mechanism.

  • The rates of solvolysis for p-nitrobenzyl chloride have been measured by the electric conductivity method in aqueous ethanol from 0.0 to 0. 5 mole fraction of ethanol under various pressures up to 1200bar at 50 and $60{\circ}C$. The activation parameters, ${\Delta}V_\0^{\neq},\ {\Delta}H^{\neq}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$ are evaluated from the rate constants. The results indicated that ${\Delta}V_\0^{\neq}$ exhibits an extremum behaviors near 0.3 mole fraction of ethanol and ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$ near 0.1 mole fraction of ethanol. This behaviors are discussed in terms of solvent structure variation and the pressure dependences of ${\Delta}H^{\neq},\ {\Delta}H^{\neq}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$ are also discussed individually. The signs of the pressure dependence of ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$${\Delta}S^{\neq}$ are shown to be consistent with those required by the Maxwell relationships for classical thermodynamic systems.
