  • This research was performed to evaluate adsorption behavior of woody charcoals obtained from wood powder, fiber and bark of spruce (Abies sibirica Ledeb). The wood materials were carbonized at various temperatures for 1 hour using experimental rotary kiln without any inert gas. The adsorption capacity of iodine and toluene, specific surface area and removal efficiency of acetic acid and ammonia gas of those charcoals were measured. The higher was the temperature for carbonization, the lower yields of charcoals were. Ash content of bark charcoal was higher than that of wood powder charcoal or fiber charcoal. Elemental analysis of woody charcoal revealed that the content of carbon was gradually lincreased as carbonization temperature was higher. When carbonization temperature was higher, adsorption capacity of woody charcoals for iodine was much improved. Wood powder charcoal and fiber charcoal were more effective for iodine adsorption rather than bark charcoal. Capacity of toluene adsorption was the highest in the charcoal of $600^{\circ}C$. Charcoals produced at high temperature efficiently removed acetic acid gas, while charcoals carbonized at low temperature such as $400^{\circ}C$ were proper to remove ammonia gas. This difference may be explained that the acidity of charcoals depends on the carbonization temperature: charcoals of low temperature indicate acidic property, while those of high temperature turned to alkaline.

  • The aims of this research were to manufacture tailored powder activated carbon having a higher prechlorate removal efficiency and to compare perchlorate removal efficiency with different carbon materials for applying to the drinking water treatment plant. Activated carbon pre-loaded with cetyltrimethylammonium chloride(CTAC) has been researched to be an effective adsorbent for removing perchlorate in the water. 10,000 mg/L tailored powder activated carbon were manufactured by mixing 5.0 g of powder activated carbon(PAC) into 500 mL of 5,000 mg/L CTAC solution. The tailored powder activated carbon had 10 times higher perchlorate removal efficiency than virgin powder activated carbon. The residual perchlorate gradually decreased with the first 15 minute contact time with the tailored powder activated carbon, however, the longer contact time did not affect perchlorate removal. Tailored powder activated carbon by manufactured with 1,083 mg/g iodine value carbon had almost 4 times higher perchlarate removal efficiency than the 944 mg/g iodine value carbon. Dosage of 5 mg/L tailored powder activated carbon, which can adaptable dosage at the treatment plant, could decrease the perchlorate concentration from 50 $\mu$g/L to 15 $\mu$g/L.

  • The purposes of this study are to treat sewage sludge that has increasingly become an issue and to recycle it as the adsorbent. The adsorbent was produced by carbonization and simultaneous steam activation, and its characteristics were studied. Parametric screening studies were carried out for the preparation of good adsorbent. Optimum operating conditions were confirmed as input carbonization-activated temperature of $840^{\circ}C$, feed steam flow rate of 70 g/min, carbonization-activated time of 30 min and feed dried sludge of 10.8 kg/day, respectively. At this time, the iodine adsorptivity was maximized as 328.1 mg/g. Pore development, structure, element compound and content were confirmed by using nanoPOROSITY, SEM (Scanning electron microscope), and EDS (Energy dispersive spectroscopy). Through this result, it was known that the adsorbent derived from sewage sludge could be used for the treatment of leachate in a landfill, VOCs (Volatile organic compounds), and so on.

  • Hydrochar has been generated from food waste via hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) reaction. As a solid product of HTC reaction, hydrochar has a great potential as an adsorbent of pollutants from the various media. The surface area and pore volumes are very important parameters to be served as an adsorbent. It requires an expensive equipment and consumes time to measure those parameter. Therefore, titration methods including iodine and methylene blue adsorption were evaluated to be correlated with that of BET analysis. Even though the absolute values of the computed surface area and pore volumes were not able to be matched directly, the patterns of change were successfully correlated. Among the reaction conditions, the reaction time and temperature at $230^{\circ}C$ for 4 h was determined as an optimization condition, which confirmed by titration method and BET analysis. Titration method for surface area and pore volumes computed by combination of iodine and methylene blue adsorbing values would be a simple and fast way of determining the optimization condition for hydrochar as an adsorbent produced by HTC reaction.
