  • Spathius ibarakius Belokobylskij et Maeto, which belongs to the Spathius exarator species group (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Doryctinae) was found as an ectoparasitoid of the first- and second-instar larvae of the citrus longhorned beetle, Anoplophora chinensis ($F{\ddot{o}}rster$) from Gwangneung, Pocheon, Korea. The discovery of this braconid wasp was made during the survey for parasitoids of the Asian and citrus longhorned beetles by using the sentinel log method. We herein describe diagnostic characters of S. ibarakius, including those of the male, and also provide illustrations. In addition, we present a host list of Korean species belong to genus Spathius.

  • Longevities of Hemiptarsenus zilahisebessi, ectoparasitoid of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) larva. were 23.0, 16.9. and 12.7 days at 20, 25, and 30$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The adults copulated and laid eggs as soon as they emerged at 20$^{\circ}C$ and 30$^{\circ}C$. The total number of eggs laid and the daily oviposition rate were 82.3/3.6, 90.3/6.0, and 95.5/7.8 at the three different constant temperatures. The sex ratios were 0.37,0.43. and 0.43 at 20,25, and 30$^{\circ}C$. respectively. Female oviposited 1.4 eggs near parasitized host larva and the average distance between eggs of H. zilahisebessi andhost larva wre 0.92mm. The instrinsic increase rates(r$\sub$m/) of H. zilahisebessi were 0.12, 0.19 and 0.27, and net reproduction were 31.0, 40.2, and 40.8 at 20,25, and 30$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Female of H. zilahisebessi oviposited mainly on the 3rd larva and sex ratio was 0.42, wheras the ratio was declined to 0.1 on the 1st larva.

  • Experiments have been performed to investigate biological characteristics of Diglyphus isaea (Walker), an ectoparasite of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess). At $25^{\circ}C$, development time of D. isaea was estimated as 1.3 days for eggs, 4.5 days for larvae and 6.3 days for pupae. Adult longevity was 25.1 days, and a female adult could lay 305.3 eggs throughout its lifetime. Number of L. trifolii parasitized or killed by the wasp was 962.2 individuals/adult. Most of all parasitized or killed larvae were identified as third instar. With 20% honeyed water as food source, half of the adults could survive 180 days at $5^{\circ}C$, 150 days at $10^{\circ}C$, and 90 days at $15^{\circ}C$. After storing at $10^{\circ}C$ with absolute honey for 30 days, 70 days and 140 days, a female adult in room temperature laid eggs 190.8 individuals, 104.0 individuals and 89.4 individuals, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the primary hosts of Tetrastichus sp. and its host relationship, development and reproductive capacity. Protopulvinaria mangiferae was parasitized by Aneristus ceroplastae, Microterys flavus, Coccophagus hawaiiensis. All of these primary parasitoid were attecked by the hyperparasite Tetrastichus sp.. Tetrastichus sp. was bound to be a solitary ectoparasite. Eggs were laid on the pupa of the primary host or attached to the inner surface of the integument of the scale insect. Threshold of the development and thermal constants for completion of immature stages were $9.8^{\circ}C$ and 272 day-degrees, respectively. At $25^{\circ}C$ the life span of both sexes without any food or with water were very short as compared with that with honey. After a pre-oviposition periods of about one day they laid on overage 220 eggs each, almost all during the first half of their life. The value of the net reproduction(Ro), the mean length of a generation(T) and the intrinsic rate of natural increase(r) were calculated as 99.6, 32days and 0.142 per female per day respectively.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the developmental periods and effect of several insecticides on Hemiptarsenus sp., ectoparasitoid of Liriomyza trifolii. The mean length and width of egg were 0.5mm and 0.1mm. The mean length of larva, pupae, abult female, and abult male were 1.9mm, 2.0mm, 2.2mm, and 1.8mm, respectively. Developmental periods of Hemiptarsenus sp. from egg to larva at 15, 20, 25, $30^{\circ}C$ were 16.9, 8.8, 5.9, and 4.5 days, and those of pupa were 20.7, 9.7, 5.6, and 3.4 days, respectively. Based on these results, developmental threshold temperatures and effective temperatures were $9.5^{\circ}C$, 91.5 degree-days in egg-larval stage, $10.9^{\circ}C$, 142.3 degree-days in pupal stage. When several insecticides were evaluated to Hemiptarsenus sp. at the recommended concentrations, B.t WP, diflubenzuron WP, and cyromazin were negligiblly effective all life stages. Fipronil SC, cartap SP, spinosad GW were less toxic to larva and pupa, but highly toxic to adults. Abamectin EC was less toxic to all life stages, but inhibited oviposition of 50% more to Hemiptarsenus sp. female.

  • Biological control of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) using Diglyphus isaea (Walker) has been evaluated in tomato greenhouse, for three seasonal culture types: spring type (March-July), summer type (June-October) and autumn type (July-December). For spring type, totally 5.8 $individuals/m^2$ of D. isaea has been released at six times from late April, when the density of L. trifolii was about 1.0 individuals/plant. Corrected mortality of Liriomyza trifolii caused by parasitoids was 97.6% at early July, and the proportion of D. isaea was 88.9% of all parasitoids collected in the greenhouse. In the case of summer type, totally 1.8 $individuals/m^2$ of D. isaea has been released at five times from early July, when the density of 1. trifolii was about 0.4 individuals/plant. Corrected mortality of L. trifolii caused by parasitoids was 84.4% during the whole season, but the proportion of D. isaea was very low (only 13.8%). Immigrating parasitoids such as Chrysocharis penthus were synchronized to control the leafminer in the greenhouse. For autumn type, totally 2.7$individuals/m^2$ of D. isaea has been released at four times from mid September, when the density of L. trifolii was about 0.7 individuals/plant. Corrected mortality of f. trifolii caused by parasitoids was 85.7% at mid December, and the proportion of the D. isaea was 83.4%.
