The Characteristics and Significance of 'Wanpan Changgeuk' Written by Heogyu (허규 연출 '완판 창극'의 특징과 의의)

  • It has been diversified and serious attempt to establish the identity of Changgeuk, but it is still independent dramaturgy or the current unformed progressive art. In this situation, exploring works of the identity of changgeuk that is base on the performed individual and specific works in the title of Changgeuk is needed. The 80s and 90s Heo, Gyu was leading an active life as a director who was responsible for directing of Changgeuk. He dramatized Siljeon Pansori -which is a group of Pansori missing text- as well as 5-remained Songs in Pansori and he presented a number of creative Changgeuk works on stage. Especially, the completion of dramatizing 5-remained Songs in Pansori under the name of 'Wanpan Changgeuk -which means full version performance without omit-' is the one of his big achievement by performing "Heungbojeon" on the stage 1982 and "Jeokbyeokga" 1985. The purposes of this research are confirmation of Heo's direction of the formulation and considering its characteristics & significance through 'Wanpan Changgeuk' which written by Heo. Heo was a practical play who was interested in the subjective formulation of national culture and creative transmission for Korean traditional performance. He tried to formulate Changgeuk to a representative performance of Korea. In the process he pointed out those problems, (1) interpretation of a work problem, (2) actor's creative problems, (3) structure problem of theater for Changgeuk. He indicated that the other challenges are to use of the stage & device, to overcome sentimentalism, to stylize acting, to improve own quality, to control the speed and length of the song, to choose the suitable musical accompaniment, to create new repertories problems, and etc. Changgeuk is classified in 3 group by origin, (1)dramatizing of 5-remained Songs, (2)dramatizing of 7-missing Songs, (3)creative dramatizing. It contains all of 3 types that Heo's work. The dramatizing of remained 5 Songs are the great importance among those works. Heo hoped that Chaggeuk has become the most representative art work of Korea by performing 'Wanpan Changgeuk' compiled heritage of Korea's outstanding artistic achievement. The characteristics of 'Wanpan Changgeuk' can be summarized following four. (1) Directing attitudes that emphasizes tradition, (2) Accepting the elements of traditional performance actively, (3) Valuing the classy and ethic, (4) Emphasizing humor and active utilizing of the secondary characters. Heo's 'Wanpan Changgeuk' shows a peak of the artistic level which Changgeuk can be reached. He want to make Changgeuk a Korean representative artistic performance by compiling Pansori heritage and accommodating Korean traditional performance. Heo continued his effort to present Pansori's authenticity and to dramatize from beginning to end without missing. It shows very well that 'Wanpan Changgeuk' takes 4~5 hours for playing. It looks Heo's achievement in the 'Wanpan Changgeuk' influenced Changgeuk significantly since then. Heo's 'Wanpan Changgeuk' is matrix of 'Wanpan JangMak Changgeuk' attempted in the 1990s. Especially, their intent is consistent to synthesize texts and to show all the virtue of Pansori. But 90's 'Wanpan JangMak Changgeuk' aim for large stage, fancy device & costume and variety contents compared with 'Wanpan Changgeuk'. Recently, producers have tried not to make a impressive Changgeuk but to make a interesting one. They usually organize performance within 2 hours and prefer orchestral music to its unique sound. In those point of view, it seems that Heo's idle in 'Wanpan Changgeuk' has become one of target to conquer in these days.

A Study of the Wanpan-changgeuk(完板唱劇) directed by Hur Gyu : Focusing on Changgeuk Dramaturgy (허규 연출 완판창극의 창극술 연구 - <흥보전>(1982)과 <흥보가>(1984)를 중심으로 -)

  • This article studies Hur Gyu's Wanpan-Changgeuk Heungbojeon (1982) and Heungboga (1984), with a specific focus on the dramaturgy of Changgeuk and its meaning as transformed from Pansori Heungboga. The dramaturgy of Wanpan-Changgeuk Heungbojeon and Heungboga served to express criticism toward selling oneself. Beyond their former classical theme of brotherly affection, these productions elicited sorrow at the sight of poverty through a dramaturgy integrating modern theatricality with the Korean dramatic style. The theme of grief for poverty in these Changgeuk plays simultaneously aroused spectators' sympathy and critical thinking about economic aspects. Moreover, the Korean drama style and humor were not used simply as a tool but to exhilarate an emotional response to a life of coexistence. This paper found that Hur Gyu's Wanpan-Changgeuk Heungbojeon and Heungboga recreated a new Changgeuk dramaturgy based on the director's integration of western thinking and Korean traditional culture on stage. Through this, Hur Gyu tried to expand spectators' sympathy and to achieve artistic and popular success. Thus, these value of Hur Gyu's Wanpan-Changgeuk lay not only in its long running-time, but in its dramaturgy of integrating thinking for his Minjokgeuk (nationalist theater).

A Study on the Classification of Jeokbyeok-ga's Version by the Computer Analysis Technique of Bibliographies (컴퓨터 문헌 분석 기법을 활용한 <적벽가> 이본의 계통 분류 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the system of the Jeokbyeok-ga's version using the Computer analysis technique of bibliographies and to examine the achievements of the Jeokbyeok-ga's version studies. First, in order to provide basic data for analysis, a raw corpus was constructed for 46 species of Jeokbyeok-ga. Through this, the common narrative units of the Jeokbyeok-ga were identified as 5 layers, and thus 146 individual paragraphs could be extracted. Based on the encoded corpus, we tried to measure the similarity and the distance between the two. Next, we applied the Multidimensional scaling method, Hierarchical cluster analysis and Cladistic analysis method of the system to confirm the distribution of versions group and it was possible to visually grasp the distance between versions and the system of the work. As a result of analyzing Computer analysis technique of bibliographies, it was found that version's group of the Jeokbyeok-ga was divided into a Wanpan(完板) series and Changbon(唱本) series. Also, it was possible to examine the influence relationship between the Pansori's traditions and transmission.

Cenozoic Brittle Stars (Ophiuroidea) from the Hagjeon Formation and the Duho Formation, Pohang Basin, Korea (제 3기 포항분지의 학전층과 두호층에서 산출된 거미불가사리 화석)

  • Forty specimens of fossil ophiuroids were collected from two formations of the Cenozoic marine deposits, Duho Formation and Hagjeon Formation, Pohang Basin, Korea. A few specimens were three-dimensionally preserved: most of them were remained flattened and articulated. Although a gross morphology is well preserved in some specimens, the details such as disk shape and plates which is the most important diagnostic features were not observed. Most of the arms are disarticulated, and thus arm vertebra, arm spines and/or arm plates are separately preserved. Only an oral side is recognized in an attached specimens because crossing arms into disk are clearly visible. It is, thus almost impossible to identify Korean ophiuroid fossils as a species level or even a genus level. The fossils were classified into 3 groups by gross morphology of disk and arm, and architecture of vertebra. The most abundant fossils (32 specimens), were found only in the Hagjeon Formation. The majority of specimens are partially disarticulated, having only proximal and median portions of their arms preserved. Arm plates are disarticulated from arm vertebra: most of them show structure of arm vertebra. It has long and well-preserved arm spines, and large tentacle pore. Some specimens (4 specimens) from the Duho Formation is characterized by short and conical arm spines, and well-developed arm plates. Lateral arm plates are small in compared to dorsal and ventral arm plates. The others (4 specimens) is poor in preservation state showing circular oral disk and relatively short sinuous arms. No arm plates are either identified.

Stepmother Narrative from Southern Buddhist Texts to Root Folklore Affiliated with Northern Buddhist Texts and Formation Course of (남전 불경계 계모형 서사의 북전 불경계 <심청전> 근원설화로의 틈입과 완판본 <심청전>의 계모형 서사 형성과정)

  • This study attempted to investigate the issue how stepmother's narrative was transferred to . For this agenda, the approach of this paper is described below to determine how Bbaengdeok's stepmother narrative was transferred episodically to . First, this paper started from the relation between stepmother narrative and affiliated with each root folk tale in Buddhist text. Among known as root folk tale until now, this paper investigated whether was the root folk tale affiliated to Buddhist literature. At that point, stepmother narrative showed relation with opening eyes motive. It has been reported that the text of opening eyes in Buddhist literature is originated from the south. This paper confirmed that 's stepmother narrative was related to Buddhist literature originated from south. Next, this paper investigated the background of opening eyes motive of stepmother types. After entering Gyeongpan , it formed Bbaengdeok narrative of Wanpan related to Literary geography of Jeollado enjoying space of Wanpan . There are two evidences for this. The first one is which was passed down around Jeollado. In the course of sudden Buddhist folklore's flow into the country, it is that combined stepmother narrative of sudden Buddhist literature with the characteristics of northern Buddhist literature which was reconstructed into son's filial behavior of northern Buddhist literature to make father's blinded eyes open. The other is the Buddhist trend of the late 18th Chosun when northern Buddhist literature and sudden Buddhist literature were combined. It appeared that stepmother narrative was formed in the Buddhist background of the late 18th Chosun when northern Buddhist literature and sudden Buddhist literature were combined.
